Abstract

This study aimed to

describe the students’ acquisition of past tense.

The

participants were five students from 3

rd

grade of senior high school who were

chosen randomly. This research used 10 tests taken from authentic materials

downloaded from the internet. The results of this study revealed that high

school learners did not show a good progress through past tense using cloze

exercise because the scores fluctuated. However some aspects such as learners

did not pay attention of the instruction and lacked understanding with some

regular, irregular verbs, modals, and verb

influenced the scores.
