Volcanoes
In Indonesia, m udflow s have been t he m ajor cause of dest ruct ion and loss of hum an life during volcanic cat ast rophes and landslides. Anot her kind of disast er w hich calm ed vict im s, but w hich w as not direct ly caused by volcanic erupt ions, happened at t he Dieng Plat eau, Cent ral Java. February 1979, t w o erupt ions and poisonous, suffocat ing gases caused t he deat h of 149 people.

Exam ples of t hese are t he eart hquakes in Bali in 1963, w hich t ook place aft er t he erupt ion of t he Agung Volcano, and t he eart hquake in w est Java in t he 1960s, caused by t he Salak volcano, So far, a direct relat ionship bet w een t ect onic eart hquakes and volcanic erupt ions has not been observed.

This phenom enon occurred during t he Krakat au cat ast rophe in 1883, and caused t he deat h of t he people living in t he coast al areas t hat t his eart hquake w as caused by sea w aves, w hich in t ur n w ere t he result of t he collapse of t he Krakat au volcano int o t he sea. This explosion w as area of t he m ost violent erupt ions t im es, and it s collapse form ed a caldera in t he seabed.
The m enace of Volcanoes is general is great er t han t hat of ot her nat ural disast ers. If an erupt ion occurred in t he Toba region, for exam ple, w here floatable deposit s are found in great quant it y, it w ould ent ail a cat ast rophe. In such cases m an is pow erless.
Volcanic erupt ions, besides clam ming t housands of lives and causing loss of propert y and dam age t o villages, are on t he ot her hand, beneficial t o agricult ure. The ash t hey produce is responsible for t he fert ile soil around act ive volcanoes. Volcanoes, w ith t heir crat ers, lakes and solfat ars are places of int erest for local as w ell as foreign t ourist s. Volcanic rock is used t he m anufact ures of building m at erials, and volcanic heat is capable of generat ing elect ricit y.

The hospital
If you look at t he front of a large, m odern hospit al, you m ay not ice t hat t here are t w o separat e ent rances. One of t hese is for pat ient s in need of im m ediat e t reat m ent . It is t he em ergency ent rance. Here am bulances are t o be seen pulling up any hour of t he day or night . The ot her ent rance is t he m ain ent rance of t he hospit al.
In t he ground floor inside m ain ent rance, t here are probably a recept ion area and w ait ing room , and also office. On t he floors above and below are t he num erous ot her depart m ent s. Pat ient , slight ly, larger room s called w ards, in w hich as m any as 40 0r 50 pat ient s m ay lie in row s of beds. On ot her floors are t he operat ing room s, called operat ing t heat ers, and special depart m ent s such as t he radiography depart m ent , w here x-rays are t aken and developed.
