ix ABSTRAK

Skripsi ini berjudul Improving Students’ Vocabulary through a Smartphone Application, Learn English with Music Songs: A Case Study of 1st Grade Students of SMA Indonesia Membangun Medan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kosakata siswa melalui aplikasi smartphone (Learn English with Music Songs). Siswa-siswi memiliki kesulitan dalam mengingat kosakata baru dan bingung untuk mengartikan kosakata. Mereka berpikir bahasa Inggris itu sulit dan membosankan. Untuk meningkatkan kosakata mereka, peneliti menggunakan lagu (Learn English with Music Songs) sebagai media pengajaran untuk membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan kosakata mereka. Skripsi ini adalah tentang bagaimana meningkatkan kosakata siswa melalui aplikasi smartphone, Learn English with Music Songs. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Classroom Action Research. Aplikasi ini terdiri dari dua putaran, yang masing-masing terdiri dari planning, acting, observing dan reflecting. Berdasarkan hasil dari penelitian ini, menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan pada kemampuan kosakata siswa. Itu dapat dilihat dari nilai rata-rata dari try out test (58.67), pre-test (66.53), dan post-test (76.97). Aplikasi Learn English with Music Songs berhasil dalam meningkatkan vocabulary siswa. Peneliti menyarankan kepada Guru bahasa Inggris bahwa mereka seharusnya menggunakan lagu sebagai media dalam mengajarkan kosakata.

x ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled Improving Students’ Vocabulary through a Smartphone Application, Learn English with Music Songs: A Case Study 1st Grade Students of SMA Indonesia Membangun Medan. The aim of the study is to improve the students’ vocabulary through a smartphone application (Learn English with Music Songs). The students have difficulties in remembering new vocabulary and confused to understand the vocabulary. The students think that English is difficult and boring. To improve students’ vocabulary, the writer uses songs (Learn English with Music Songs) as teaching media to help the students in increasing their vocabulary. This study is about Improving Students’ Vocabulary through a Smartphone Application, Learn English with Music Songs: A Case Study of 1st Grade Students of SMA Indonesia Membangun Medan. The method used in this research is classroom action research. It content of two cycle, each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Based on the result of this study, shows that there is an improvement on the students’ vocabulary achievement. It can be seen from the mean score of try out test is 58.67, pre-test is 66.53, and post-test is 76.97. Learn English with Music Songs application is success in improving students’ vocabulary at the first grade SMA Indonesia Membangun Medan in the Academic Year 2014/2015. Finally the writer suggests to the teachers that they should use songs as one of media in the teaching vocabulary.
