Cultural Note
Most Indonesians take two baths each day. One bath is taken in the morning and the other in the evening. A bath does not necessarily mean a full immersion into a bathtub; instead, a bath in Indonesia may consist of retrieving water with a dipper from a cistern and then pouring it over one’s body. The majority of Indonesians have a simple toilet called a kakus. It consists of a hole in the floor of the bathroom where one squats to use it. Water is then poured down the hole when one is finished. Wealthy Indonesian families and most hotels in Indonesia have Western-type toilets.
Grammar Note
The suffix an is used to indicate the item that is being acted upon or the result of an action. Here are some examples:
makan (to eat) – makanan (food or meal)
minum (to drink) -- minuman (beverage or drinks)
The question word dimana means “where is,” and it is used to ask for directions. Here is an example:
Dimana kamar mandi? Where is the bathroom?
Unlike in English, the “to be” verb adalah is not used in Indonesian when the question word dimana is used.

Our house has three bedrooms: one for my wife and me, one for our two sons, and one for my father-in-law. Two bedrooms are upstairs, and one bedroom is downstairs. We have one bathroom with a sink and shower, but no bathtub. We have a large kitchen with a stove, oven, sink, and refrigerator. In the kitchen, there is a large table where we eat. We do not have a separate dining room. Our living room has a couch, coffee table, two chairs, and a small television. In the evening, we all like to watch TV after dinner.
