Makan-Makan di Rumah Makan/ Warung

Eating Out

In this lesson, you will be introduced to the customs and common vocabulary you will encounter while dining out in Indonesia. The lesson includes reading a menu, ordering menu items, and learning the names of tableware items.

A typical “warung,” or street-side stall, in Jakarta

Cultural Notes

Dining in Indonesia can be very pleasurable, especially if you are brave enough to try the local food. It was not long ago that when traveling to Indonesia, you would not find fast food restaurants. However, today, fast food chains are everywhere; especially in the major cities. A traditional food dish in Indonesia includes rice. In fact, almost every meal you order comes with a bowl of rice. Anything without rice is considered a snack or jajan. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants (Rumah makan China) in Indonesia. If you like noodles, they are widely available in the Chinese restaurants.

Most Indonesians from Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Java will use the fingers of their right hand to eat their meals. The people from the Maluku Island and Northern Sulawesi Island use spoons and forks to eat their meals. It is a common sight to see people eating with their fingers at

street-side stalls or warungs. When eating out in restaurants, however, spoons, knives, and forks are normally used. In the Chinese restaurants, chopsticks are provided.

Breakfast usually consists of fried rice, or bread, and tea or coffee. It is common to serve rice, some meat or fish, and cooked or fresh vegetables for lunch and supper. Indonesians eat their rice with sambal or hot sauce. Dessert is usually served after the main course. It is called “obat

pencuci mulut,” which literally means, “Remedy to wash your mouth.”

Indonesia has a large variety of local and imported soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Nightclubs usually serve a variety of liquors. The majority of Indonesians will drink tea, coffee, or fruit juice. Bottled water is also widely available. As a foreigner, you should never drink the tap water unless it has been boiled for five minutes. In addition, you should also avoid uncooked foods because they have probably been rinsed in tap water. Also, ice cubes, should be avoided since they are made from water that has not been boiled.
