HEDONISM OF UPPER EAST SIDE TEENAGERS IN MANHATTAN ELITE AS DESCRIBED IN GOSSIP GIRL TV SERIES SEASON 1

Abstract
In this thesis, the writer analyzes about the modern hedonism about The Upper East Side Teenagers in Manhattan Elite as the result of condition and social surrounding. The objectives of the study are to find out how the hedonism life style affect into teenagers life as described in Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl TV Series Season 1. To find out the answer of the problem formulated before, the writer applied sociological approach as the theory that provides an explanation for human society. Sociology commonly used in order to examine human relationship toward supporting effect of human behavior. The data source to be analyzed is Gossip Girl TV Series Season 1 by Cecily von Ziegesar. Since the data source of this analysis is drama series or movie therefore the writer uses Cinematography aspect as the supporting theory to analyze the dialogue, narration, sounds, camera angle, lighting and effect inside of the movie. This analysis revealed the issue about hedonism lifestyle, how hedonism affects the teenager’s life in Manhattan Elite as the result of social surrounding. Modern hedonism is more about lifestyles, and more broadly, it can be a language, fashion and branded things as the effect of modern times. In the twentieth century hedonism became significantly popular, not only talking about fashions style or branded things but also held a party among upper class society. Another example of modern hedonism of Upper East Side Teenagers happened when Bass family held Brunch to Chuck’s father foundation. Many people adopt this thought to show the excess of urban wealth. Means that, hedonism is the theory of pleasure, which pleasure of their own life become the most important in living among big society.

INTRODUCTION
In simpler word hedonism is the over reacting of behavior in showing their wealth execessive (Novita et al., 2020), (Sari & Sukmasari, 2018), (Novita & Husna, 2020). This behavior widely spread among the elite or upper class society (Nagel, 2014), (Rido et al., 2014), (Kuswanto et al., 2020). Hedonism itself actually started from the past time, at first only for the people who live in the kingdom. But now in the modern era, for some people the appearance is very important as the key to gain the confidence therefore most of teenagers from the present time as described in Gossip Girl TV Series they wants to look beautiful and fashionable in their appearance by using many kinds of accessories and branded things (Oktaviani & Sari, 2020).
A hedonist assumes that life just once and wealthy as the main purpose of life (Muliyah &
Aminatun, 2020), (Abudhahir et al., 2015), (Sukerti & Yuliantini, 2018). Based on that though, the hedonists spend their life in persuiting the pleasure of life refers to several related theories about what is good for us, how we should behave, and what motivates us to behave in the way that we do (Eva Tuckyta et al., 2021), (Suryono & Subriadi, 2016). It means that in order to full fill the real human desire, human‘s mindset is in chasing the
most important treasure of their lives (Liu et al., 2020). Hedonism nowdays turns into selective lifestyle among the society especially for Upper East Side of Manhattan (Tuhuteru & Iriani, 2018), (Schrape, 2018), (Nurkholis & Sitanggang, 2019).
The Upper East Side is the neighborhood between Park Avenue and East river of Manhattan. Extends from 59th St. to 96th St. east of Fifth Avenue and is known as one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in which to live. The Upper East Side is home to many of the wealthiest New Yorkers, as well as Museum Mile and world class shopping.
Here, the Upper East Side is characterized by luxurious homes and a high standard of living. Numerous branded fashion shop, luxuriest hotel, private school and so on located there. It is called as the luxurious paradise and New Yorkers life seems already full filled by the availability accomodation of it (Hana et al., 2019).
This neighborhood has become the most remarkable of glamourous measurement in society because of it glamous acomodation. Many upper sider do such kinds of hedonistic behavior as the result of condition and social surrounding (WING, n.d.), (Susanto & Ahdan, 2020), (Sari, 2014). Not only for adult , hedonism thinking also affect into teenage life.
The hedonism of upper side teenager is reflected in Gossip Girl Tv Series Season 1. This motion picture even tv serial come up with theme glamourus and hedonistic behavior placed here. One of them is Gossip Girl.
Like other teens drama series in a general, Gossip Girl TV series is about the lives of Upper Class Teenagers in the area of Manhattan, Amerika. The story of this drama itself quite a lot, starts from the father and daughter relationships, love triangles and various kinds of activities of school life style Upper East Sider. Starring by talented young stars, such as Blake Lively as Sereena, and Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf, this Drama can be said as a successful TV series in Amerika. When the first published in 2007, this drama series was very popular at that time (Mittal & Patidar, 2019), (Schrape, 2018), (Tuhuteru & Iriani, 2018). This series was watched by 3.50 million viewers and has received numerous award nominations and winning 18 Teen Choice Awards. Featuring a variety of fashion trends and luxury lifestyle among teenager, make the Gossip Girl TV series become favorite by millions of teenagers in America. What makes this drama series so special than other is this drama also created a fashion trends for the fans itself especially teenagers will certainly follow the hair styles and dress of the Gossip Girl stars (Puspaningtyas, n.d.), (Wahyudin
& Rido, 2020).
Since the story is about the life style of Upper class Society in Manhattan, the hedonism life style appears in this drama series (Pratiwi, 2020). If we talk about the teenager‘s lives nowadays it is definitely about the school‘s lives and loves. But here in this case what makes this Gossip Girl drama series is different than other is not only talking about love but also about the lifestyle of Upper Class society of teenagers in Manhattan, it is about the social life, go to a prep school and fancy parties which their rich parents.
As we know the life style of teenagers nowadays as described in Gossip Girl, they will never stop if they are talking about the fashion style. Every girl wants to look fashionable and beautiful in their appearance with full of accessories and branded things. Gossip Girl Drama series created a fashion trends about hair style and dress that is why it is the way how to attract the audience especially teenagers. So by discussing the Hedonism life styles,
the writer believes that through this analysis can gives knowledge and new information to the reader especially teenagers how to look beautiful and fashionable in their appearance.
Hedonism has become the remarkable theme in describing New Yorker nowadays. In here, human existence was considered by wealthy excessive. The lifestyle is not only affect adult‘s life but also teenagers as reflected in Gossip Girl series. By using sociological theory, the writer is able to determine teenager behaviour in Upper East Side.
Human behavior widely affects the existence of American drama (Kardiansyah, 2016), (Kardiansyah, 2019), (Amelia, 2021). Many of American behavior depicted in here. One of the most selected themes is hedonism and glamorous side of American teenager and women. This research aim to analyze the important points of human behavior especially for teenager in Upper East Side in Manhattan Elite
LITERATURE REVIEW Manhattan Elite
Since this research discuss about hedonism of Upper East Side teenager in Manhattan Elite.
It is important to give further understanding. In simpler understanding, Manhattan Elite is an elite community that settled along the Manhattan. But, before dig up further explanation about what happened in Manhattan Elite, it is important to put some information about the construction of this community exist among the society (Wantoro et al., 2021), (Nurkholis
& Sitanggang, 2019), (Choi et al., 2015), (Schrape, 2018).
Manhattan is one of the highest income places in the United States so, there is no wonder if Manhattan elite have sattled in Manhattan. Manhattan elite itself is a group or class of persons or a member of such a group or class, enjoying superior intellectual, social, or economic status (Sari & Sukmasari, 2018), (Lennon, 2008), (Akbar & Rahmanto, 2020), (Ahmad et al., 2018). Manhattan is a city of defensive population. Manhattan livelihood are bounded to several myth of citizen settlement such as SoHo, are commercial and known for upscale shopping. Others, such as Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Alphabet City and the East Village, have long been associated with the Bohemian subculture, Chelsea is a neighborhood with a large gay population, and recently a center of New York's art industry and nightlife and this myth are still associates till now. Means, Manhattan‘s settlements are bounded with several myth‖ among the society itself.
Here, as the results of bounded myth among the society, people lives in grouping community when the richer only commutate with richer, bohemians an artist only for bohemians, and gay only for gay without any changes to blends each other.
Upper East Side
Since this research is mainly discussed about the hedonism of Upper East Side teenager in Manhattan Elite, therefore it is important to put some information about Upper East Side that exists among Manhattan Elite. In simpler understanding, Upper East Side is neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, between Central Park and the East River. The Upper East Side lies within an area bounded by 59th Street to 96th Street, and the East River to Fifth Avenue-Central Park.
As described by Heather Cross in her article, Manhattan's Upper East Side has culture, shopping and NYC's wealthiest residents that The Upper East Side is home to many of the wealthiest New Yorkers, as well as Museum Mile and world class shopping (2001). Means, Upper East Side has already known as the place of pleasure seeker especially shopping adductors and many wealthiest New Yorker live in Upper East Side.
It is a convenient location for exploring Central Park, as well as the many museums along Museum Mile (Cross.2001) The famous Madison Avenue is home to many couture and designer shops, and even if you can't afford to buy anything, the window shopping is extraordinary. Park Avenue is lined with gorgeous pre-war apartment buildings and the gardening down the median makes it a lovely place to stroll. The Upper East Side is also home to many of Manhattan's Luxury Hotels (Cross.2001). Based on the explanations above, The Upper East described as the center of luxurious places and it is suitable place for the one who wanted to find a pleasure in life. as informed before that The Upper East is suitable place for pleasure seekers but in the beginning, it just like an ordinary neighborhood.
Hedonism
Hedonism is the over reacting of behavior in showing their wealth execessive. Hedonism in all its variants, it holds that happiness is a matter of raw subjective feeling. A happy life maximizes feelings of pleasure. Hedonism begins from ancient times in the beginning to the empire and become a sort of doctrine to seek the happiness life. The world of hedonism is the world of fashion, photography, advertising, television. Hedonism nowadays is more about lifestyles, and more broadly, it can be a language, fashion and branded things as the effect of modern times (Harahap, 2016), (Rianto, 2021).
Hedonism of Upper East Side Teenager
Upper East side is described as the most expensive resident in America, it is all because many upper east society live there. Sarah Arsley ever state in her essay about Upper east side life style that ―They are rich , they are beautiful and they know it. Upper east side teenager live in previllage as upper rich person and all of their needs are full filled easily that is the reason why many hedonist behaviour appear in this social class.
METHOD
This research will use a descriptive qualitative research. The main data source of this research is Gossip Girl TV series season 1 by Cecily Von Ziegesar. This data source is the main information which is used by the writer to analyze the research (Kuswoyo et al., 2020). The data of this research itself taken from the narrations, dialogues, sounds, camera angle, lighting and pictures from the Gossip Girl TV series.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Hedonism of Upper East Side Teenager through Party
As quoted by TheDirty.com that most of teenager life in Upper East Side life are shopping, vacationing and partying. It is important to seek the hedonism behavior which is done by mostly Upper East Side teenager life. In this analysis, the writer tries to give further insight about hedonism part through analyzing the parties which is held by Chuck, Nate, and Blaire caused as the privilege of life the spend their time in seeking the pleasure by
to conclude that actually hedonism behavior constructs the life of Upper East Side teenager as seen in several party such as Kiss On Lips and Chuck‘s Brunch.
Night Party
The atmosphere of hedonism in Upper East Side teenager daily life happens in Blaire night party in Pilot episode. Blaire Waldroff held her night party weekly after Serena mysteriously disappears for boarding school. The hedonism part happens when Blaire, Chuck, and Nate are riding the limousine and held little party before the real party begins, Night Party. As stated by Heathwood, (2006:20) that hedonism is the desire theory of welfare are typically seen as archrivals in the contest over identifying what makes one‘s life go best. In this scene, explicitly describes that actually in Upper East Side teenage life, living in a party and seeking for fun are best their life go best. As seen in this scene (4.1.1), Nate and Blaire are enjoying the champagne that actually are not suppose to be drunk by teenage but by analyzing the expression of Blaire and Nate they are seemingly enjoying the time when they are held their little party in limousine.
In this scene, the director uses medium lighting. Here, medium lighting is used to give a persona about their life. They always life under the spotlite without knowing behind all of the hedonism side of them there are some secrets were hidden by them. For example Blaire.
She is looks like happy in helding her little party but inside she is sad because her mother always threat her as barbie doll not a human. Meanwhile Nate and Chuck, they must living under their father‘s greatness. They are forced be as perfect as their father. This scene is taken without dialogue and emphasizes the sound in music background by ―The Machetes‖ entitle ―Better Living‖. Here, this song is so match with the condition inside the limousine. This song tells about how magnificence being a riches but nobody knows what they must face every day as difficult as common people always face in their life.
This song is picked by the director to emphasize behind their happy life and hedonism action that Upper East Side teenager do in daily life but actually they have secret that no one knows better. Meanwhile for camera angle, here the director uses close up angle in order to emphasize the expression of all Upper East Side when they are doing the hedonism itself. Through this scene, the writer concludes that actually they did such hedonism action as the escape plan for their daily burden as riches. Here, by doing the party all night long they hoping their burden would lose even just for a moment.
Behind of all hedonism that happened during the party actually this party actually held by Blaire to keep her power in school after Serena shockingly arrival for everyone from boarding school (see picture 4.3). in this scene, the director uses low angle and medium shoot in order to scrutinize Blaire and her new gank expression when they are meeting Serena at school. Meanwhile for lighting the director uses sunlight in order to give persona as natural as possible to the viewer about school condition. Blaire‘s power struggle also seen in the dialogue as followed
Serena : So, When‘s the party? (Everybody looking at each other)
Blaire : Saturday...and you‘re kind not invited, since until 12 hours ago everyone though you are in boarding school and we‘re full Gossip Girl : Spotted in the step of the math, in S and B power struggle...did
she think she could walk home and think they would be just they were
Based on the quotation above, it can be concluded that Blaire held a magnificent party in order to makes Serena envy on her power at school during Serena‘s absence. Here, the
hedonism has purpose, not only for searching the pleasure of their teenage life but also to show the power of the dominance. Hedonism is a life about well-being. Well-being here, for Blaire is not always about wealthy. Everyone knows Blaire‘s birth right. Here, in order to posses the ―perfect‖ life for her the power dominance is necessary things to be gotten.
In this scene, explicitly emphasizes that in Blaire‘s life being a riches without having power dominance is nothing. So, she must takes over all spot from Serena to keep her dominance at school during Serena‘s absences. Through this scene, the writer concludes that actually doing the hedonism is not only for seeking the pleasure but many hidden purpose along the hedonism behavior such what Blaire‘s did.
Brunch
Another example of Hedonism of Upper East Side teenager happened when Bass family held brunch to Chuck‘s father foundation. The hedonism atmosphere smelled since the beginning ―Wild Brunch‖ episode. In this scene, the director uses medium shoot and angle in order to give clear view about what the Upper East Side do when Brunch. It is also used to give strick distingtion about brunch of Manhattan Elite and common people are different. For music background, the director choose clasical music in order to give persona about luxurious brunch that held by Bass family. Not only that, the hedonism part also happened inside the naration which is delivered by Gossip Girl as seen in the quotation as followed;
Gossip girls : is any better day then leaving in Sunday…Reading a paper in bed, shriving coffee, yeah, right…we Upper East Side don’t do lazy, breakfast is brunch. And it comes with champagne and dress code
This dialogue emphasized that the Upper East Side never do any ordinary activity in their breakfast. It is explicitly emphasized that the Upper East Side is not just an ordinary leaving creature by emphasizing the words ―we Upper East Side don‘t do lazy, breakfast is brunch. And it comes with champagne and dress code‖. Through this dialogue, the writer concludes that even for their breakfast everything must be hedonically concepted. As common people Sunday is considered as lazy time but for the Upper East Side teenager Sunday is the time to keep breakfast in fancy ways.
The Hedonism of the Upper East Side Teenager
This scene happened in ―Poison Ivy‖ episodes when all teenage characters are preparing their school stuff. In this scene there are strict difference morning preparations between the riches and commodore. Meanwhile the riches are preparing the appearance by wearing flossy jewelry but Dan Humphrey start his day by some cuts in his face while he is shaping. Through this scene, the writer argues that actually the hedonist life started since the Upper East Side start their day until the end. Here, seemingly emphasized that actually the Upper East Side lives in wealthy and flossy things around meanwhile as the commodore likes Dan Humphrey life in the Upper East teenager is such impossible for him.
This scene is taken in 4 different places. First scene is taken in Serena‘s room while she is making up. Next is in Nate Bathroom while he wears his ruby ring. Chuck is picking his scarf; Blaire puts her flossy bros followed by her follower that did same things meanwhile Dan is shaping and cuts by cutter. This scene is take to emphasizes how the Upper East Side start their day by put some flossy jewelry as their accessories meanwhile the commodores start their day away from glamorous things. The director also uses ―Glamorous‖ song which is sang by fresh female student at school to emphasizes
that actually mostly the Upper East Side teen life surrounded by glamour life that no one‘s get.
Manhattan Elite as Closed Relationship Community
Manhattan‘s settlements are bounded with several ―myth‖ among the society itself. Here, as the results of bounded ―myth‖ among the society, people lives in grouping community when the richer only commutate with richer, bohemians an artist only for bohemians, and gay only for gay without any changes to blends each other. Also appear in ―Wild Brunch‖ episode.
This scene happened when Serena uses the arrival of Dan in neighborhood as an excursion of her absent in Bass‘s family brunch. Here, Lily Van De Woodson—Serena‘s mother—
tries to give explicit understanding about this brunch is important for her life in the future and emphasized Serena about her privilege is nothing without her concern.
Lily : Dan? Still here?
Serena : ―look mom, I really think that it isn‘t a good idea for me to go to that brunch
Lily : you‘ve promised
Serena : yeah, it‘s before I know that Danny is hungry too, I cannot let this boy starve
Lily : Serena, he is not invited Serena : that‘s why I‘m going
Dan : Yeah, that‘s because I can‘t go with her
Here, Dan Humphrey was born in commodores family meanwhile Serena from the elite society that bounded by rules. Started from the first conversations, Lily satirically insults Danny existence by saying ―still here?‖ with flat intonations. Based on this dialogues, the writer conclude that actually as commodores, Dan is not accepted in Elite life especially entering Serena‘s life as born in elite family. When Lily said that ―He is no invited‖, explicitly Lily emphasizes to Dan to go from the brunch because he is as commodores meanwhile the party is dedicated for the elite. Through this dialogue, the writer concludes that actually Manhattan Elite is closed community where the fellows must only get along with the elite not for the commodores like Danny. The Brunch is dedicated for the elite so, for people who are considered as the outsiders are not deserved to enjoy the life of elite. If the outsider cannot life that one, at least they can observe from a distance this quotation explicitly matches with what Lily would intend to Dan existence in their community.
CONCLUSION
In this research, the writer concludes that actually being a rich and famous is the main purpose of Upper East Side teenager. As common people belief hedonist assumes that life just once and wealthy as the main purpose of life. But in the Gossip Girl, the hedonism has purpose, not only for searching the pleasure of their teenage life but also to show the power of the dominance. Some characters did hedonism action as the approval of power struggle.
Such as Blaire and her own party as the persona of Upper East Side life that spends their amount basis of money to held a party. Here, Blaire is in struggle to get her main purpose of Well-being. According to Blaire, well-being is not always about wealthy. Here, in order
to posses the perfect life for her the power dominance is necessary things to be gotten.
The hedonism also happened in Chuck Bass‘s Bruch. Here, hedonism once again has different purpose beside they wanted to show the family archival , Chuck‘s father wanted his son still remember that they are is in upper class and never do such insulted action that can be humiliated by others.
Based on that, the writer concludes that being rich is not always first goal of life especially by the one who was born in elite family. What if, you already got what everyone wanted but for the perfection of well-being doing the hedonism action is just supporter action in pursuit another achievement in order to get the individuals concept of well-being.
Another does hedonism as the escape plan on the burden of life. The writer concludes that actually some teenager in The Upper East Side did such hedonism action as the escape plan for their daily burden as riches. Here, by doing the party all night long they hoping their burden would lose even just for a moment. In occasion, Upper East Side did hedonism as the land mark of who are riches and who are commodores. Here, the Upper East Side teenager puts some jewelry and expensive things in their appearance in order to give strict distinction between the riches or not by appearance. By uses jewelry and flossy things as their accessories, the riches able to be marked as the upper class of society with saying nothing.
For the last, Manhattan landscapes are bounded by ―myth‖. So, they cannot easily blend with another because it bounded since long time. Here, Manhattan Elite known as the closed community and the outsider would not get a ticket to pass by. In order to put away the outsider from their life, The Upper East Side teenagers especially do humiliation for the one who is considered as the outsider.
