ABSTRACT

One kind of novels that is interesting to analyze and will be discussed in this research paper is The Family from One End Street written by Eve Garnett.

The Family from One End street is a story of a big and poor family. Mrs. Ruggles, the main character in this novel was a washerwoman and her husband is a dustman. Mrs. Ruggles has to struggle for her family survival because there are seven children which each children has different attitude and different problems. So, in this novel there are a lot of conflicts faced by Mrs Ruggles, a main character in the novel. There are some theories that help the writer in finding the theme through external conflicts. The theories are : theory of conflict, theory of theme, and theory of how to analyzed the theme through conflict.

Salah satu novel yang menarik untuk dianalisis dan yang akan di bahas dalam makalah ini adalahThe Family from One End Street yang ditulis oleh Eve Garnett. The Family from One End Street adalah sebuah novel yang menceritakan tentang sebuah keluarga besar dan miskin. Mrs. Ruggles adalah karakter utama dalam novel ini yang bekerja sebagai tukang cuci dan suaminya adalah seorang tukang sampah. Mrs. Ruggles harus berjuang untuk kelangsungan keluarga mereka dikarenakan keluarga itu mempunyai tujuh orang anak yang masing-masing mempunyai sikap dan masalah yang berdeda-beda. Jadi, di dalam novel ini banyak sekali conflict yang dihadapi Mrs.Ruggles sebagai karekter utama. Ada beberapa teori yang membantu penulis dalam menemukan tema melalui konflik. Teori-teorinya antara lain : teori konflik, teori tema dan teori menganalisa tema melalui konflik.
