ABSTRACT
Every creature in this world might experience twist or turning point in life
which has to be faced. Just like in the novel entitled
The Call of The Wild
written by Jack London, the main character experienced an important
event that changed his entire life. It was about a dog named Buck who
lived in a fancy big house owned by his master in California, Southland.
Buck was suddenly kidnapped by his master’s gardener and sold to men
who went to Northland to find gold. Then, during his unexpected journey
from Southland to Northland, he visited many places that were so harsh
and rough. In these places, Buck encountered some conflicts, both internal
and external. Hoeper and Pickering defined conflicts as oppositions or
clashes. The internal conflicts focuses on the oppotisions within a creature
with his own mind, psyche or personality, whereas the external conflicts
are the oppositions against other characters outside the protagonist. This
thesis is aimed to derive the theme of the novel
The Call of The Wild
through the settings and conflicts experienced by Buck. For that purpose,
Formalistic Approach was used as its capability to analyze the intrinsic
elements of a novel. Finally, the results found out that the settings and
conflicts which were experienced by Buck might derive the theme which
turned out to be the struggle and effort of a kidnapped dog which coped
the conflicts in his life during his journey from Southland to Northland and
fulfilling his destiny to be the leader of a wolf pack in the hostile
Northland environment.
