iii ABSTRACT

Optic neuritis is an inflammation of optic nerve . The loss of vision is the major symptom reported in more than 90% of patients who have acute optic neuritis. The optic neuritis can be divided into typical and atypical. The optic neuritis is resulting from an idiopathic, inflammatory, infectious or demyelinating etiology.

The purpose of the study was to determine prevalence of optic neuritis, define the characteristic and the management of optic neuritis patients in Ophthalmology Unit, National Eye Center, Cicendo Eye Hospital from year August 2009 August 2011.The study is using rerospective descriptive method by evaluating the data from the medical records in which the patients were diagosed with optic neuritis.

The numbers of patients on August 2009 August 2011 were 65 patients.

Female patients are more common than male, they were 37 (56,92%) patients. Male patients were 28 (43,08%) cases. The onset of symptoms in 39 (60,00%) patients were within 0-7 days. There were 39 (60,00%) patients presented with initial visual acuity <3/60. In addition, there were 53 (81,54%) patients with visual field defect. The majority of the patients, 32 (49,23%), were having central scotoma. The optic disc appearance of 65 patients showed majority of 32 (49,23%) patients were having retrobulbar neuritis. The loss of contrast sensitivity were found in 34 (52,31%) patients.
