1. Subject and source
Aerial parts of the following voucher specimens were analysed: ¹. stenophylla: Mexico. Michoacan: Uruapan, C. G. Pringles 10361. Guerrero: Los Barrales, G. B. Hinton 14910. Jalisco: La Barranca, Guadalajara, W.E. Sa!ord 1460.
Voucher specimens are deposited in the Darwinian Herbarium (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and the Miguel Lillo Herbarium (TucumaHn, Argentina).
2. Previous work
None.
3. Present study
The following #avonoids were identi"ed in the aerial parts of ¹agetes steno
-phylla: quercetagetin, patuletin, patuletin 7-glucoside, isorhamnetin, isorhamnetin
3-galactoside and isorhamnetin 7-glucoside. The results were supported by all voucher specimens cited.
Separation and identi"cation of compounds were carried out by CC, PC, TLC and UV-VIS spectroscopy techniques, based on procedures described by Mabry et al. (1970) and by Markham (1982), and have been described in previous papers (Abdala de Israilev and Seeligmann, 1983; Abdala de Israiler et al. 1991)
4. Chemosystematic signi5cance
Morphology and #avonoid chemistry suggest that ¹. stenophylla is related to
Argentine species. The #avonoids quercetagetin, patuletin and/or their glycosides, which characterise Argentine species of¹agetes(Abdala, 1989), have also been found in this study.
¹. stenophyllamight be most closely allied to three north west Argentine species (Abdala and Seeligmann, 1983, 1985) where the#avonoid isorahmnetin and/or its glycosides, have also been detected.
