Hadith in The Modern Era

Abstrack

A

^greatmodem-day leader

of an

authoritative

Islamic

State had discourse to abolish and replace the Prophet's traditions which were deemed no Ionger compatible

with

thc times. Among the hadiths that need to be replaced are hadittrs about Camels as vehicles that used

to

accompany the Prophet's journey, the hadith about prohibiting women from going out without rntthrim

and hadith about the implementation of polygamy.

If

this discourse is continued then someday therc

will

come a time when the generation of Muslims can no longer recognize and inherit any

of

the hadiths

of

the Prophet because before reaching their generation, the traditions were deleted and replaced

by

their predecessors one by ^one.

The thouglrt that had disturbed one ^of,the great leaders

of

the Islamic ttmmah could not

be

said

to

be onc hundred perccnt wrong, criticized as ^a l-rsretical thought let alonc by the initiator of the idea, but the solution offered ^to address the traditions that rvere considered "outdated" needs to be straightened out . It is not the hadith that must be replaced but liow the methodoiogy captures the message

of

the hadith which rnust always be revised. Adjustment between the nccds and the developmenl of the tiues b-v looking at the sirnilarity of the causes and r:hjectives narrated by tire hadith, in the end

will

make the traditions

of

thc Prophet forcver forever as a guide to

life
