The Effectivity of Table Sugar and Aspartame on the Growth of

Streptococcus mutans

ABSTRACT

Streptococcus mutans is a bacteria which needs sucrose for growth. Table

sugar is sucrose, aspartame is a methyl ester of a dipeptide of aspartic acid and

phenylalanine which is an artificial sweetener. Aspartame is unique because it

tastes very much like table sugar but it does not cause dental caries like table

sugar does. This experiment was done by combining table sugar and aspartame to

study the effectivity of 20% table sugar, 20% table sugar+0.2% aspartame and

0.2% aspartame on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.

The method used in this study was experimental by streaking on TYCSB, a

type of selective medium for the growth of Streptococcus mutans and the sucrose

concentration was varied using 20% table sugar, 20% table sugar+0.2% aspartame

and 0.2% aspartame.

The results of this experiment show that

Streptococcus mutans grew when

streaked on TYCSB when sucrose concentration was substituted with 20% table

sugar but it did not grow with 20% table sugar+0.2% aspartame and 0.2%

aspartame.

The conclusion of this study is that

Streptococcus mutans does not grow in

TYCSB substituted with aspartame 0.2% and table sugar 20%+aspartame 0.2%

but

Streptococcus mutans grows when sucrose is substituted with table sugar

20%.

ABSTRAK

Streptococcus mutans adalah bakteri yang memerlukan sukrosa untuk

pertumbuhannya. Gula meja adalah sukrosa, aspartam adalah pemanis sintetis

yang merupakan sejenis dipeptida yang terdiri dari asam aspartat dan

fenilalanina. Aspartam unggul karena mempunyai rasa manis yang mirip gula

meja dan tidak merusak gigi. Tujuan penelitian ini dilakukan adalah untuk

mengkaji pengaruh dengan mengkombinasi gula meja 20%, gula meja

20%+ aspartam 0.2% dan aspartam 0.2% terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus

mutans.

Metode eksperimen ini adalah menggunakan teknik penggarisan pada TYCSB,

yang merupakan medium selektif untuk pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans.

Sukrosa pada TYCSB diganti dengan gula meja 20%, gula meja 20%+ aspartam

0.2% dan aspartam 0.2%.

Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Streptococcus mutans masih tumbuh

pada TYCSB dengan gula meja 20% tetapi Streptococcus mutans tidak tumbuh

pada TYCSB dengan gula meja 20%+ aspartam 0.2% dan aspartam 0.2%.

Kesimpulannya, Streptococcus mutans tidak dapat tumbuh ketika sukrosa pada

TYCSB diganti dengan aspartam 0.2% dan gula meja 20%+ 0.2% aspartam

namun Streptococcus mutans tetap tumbuh jika sukrosa diganti dengan gula meja

20%.
