ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to investigate how the teacher gave instructions for the 3rd and 5th grade students in an elementary school. Two research questions guided this study: How does teacher in SD Negeri Tegalrejo 02 Salatiga differentiate his instructions for the third and fifth graders? And why does the teacher use different instructions? The subject of this study was one teacher who taught in the 3rd and 5th grade in SD Negeri Tegalrejo 02 Salatiga. Observation and interview were used to collect the data. Different from the previous study done by Thompson and Valladares (2011), the results of the study found that in the 3rd grade, the teacher used whole-class instruction most. The reason was because the students in the 3rdgrade were able to accept teacher’ instructions quickly. It was different in the 5th grade. The teacher used individual instruction most. The reason why the teacher used that way was because students in the 5th grade should be guided one by one.
