Theme: Likes and Dislikes.

Player: Two students. Student A as Mira, and student B as Marina.

Situation: The two students are going to have a long vacation. They are planning what they are going to do during vacation. They are talking in the café about likes and dislikes.

Student A

(Mira) You ask Marina what her favorite drink and food is, and ask her what she would like to drink and eat. You tell Marina what you are going to do during the vacation. Tell Marina that you are going to go traveling, and to visit your relatives in the village. You ask Marina what she likes to do in her vacation.

Student B

(Marina) You tell Mira that your favorite drink is avocado juice and your favorite food is gado-gado. You tell Mira that for the time being you prefer drinking hot tea and eating fried chicken. You tell Mira that you dislike traveling. You are going to do the gardening instead of traveling.

Mira : What’s your favorite drink, Marina?

Marina : My favorite drink is avocado juice. Mira : How about food? What’s your favorite food?

Marina : My favorite food is gado-gado.

Mira : So, would you like to drink avocado juice and eat gado-gado?

Marina : For the time being, I prefer drinking hot tea and eating fried chicken. Mira : Why?

Marina : I got flu and I want to eat something hot. Mira : We will have a long vacation, won’t we? Marina : Yes, that’s right.

Mira : I plan to go traveling and visit my relatives in the village. Marina : How much do you like traveling?

Mira : I really like it. What do you like to do in your vacation?

Marina : I hate traveling, but I enjoy gardening. So, I will do the gardening, and do the house keeping.

Theme: Describing Imagined Scenes.

Players: Two students. Student A as Nurdin and student B as Indah.

Situation: Both of you are from the same high school in town. You are now students at private universities. You are having a discussion on your own dreams.

Student A (Nurdin)

You are a student at a private university in your town. You took this university because you failed the university entrance test. You took a local university entrance test at Gajah Mada University but you didn’t pass. Tell Indah your dreams and ask her dreams. You develop the presented scenario. Please do not forget to use the correct expressions to describe your dreams.

Student B (Indah)

You are a university student from a private university in your town. You took this university because you did not pass the university entrance test. You tried to take a local university entrance test at Institute Technology Bandung (ITB) and Universitas Indonesia (UI) but you didn’t pass. You tell Nurdin what your dreams.You expand the scenario to obtain lively conversation.

Indah: I have dreamed that I were a university student at ITB. If I were a student at ITB, I would choose architect program so that I could design my own house and the houses of my parents. Ientered a Pakuan private university in Bogor because I did not pass the university entrance test. I tried to take a local university entrance test at Institute Technology Bandung (ITB) and Universitas Indonesia (UI) but I didn’t pass.

Theme: Giving Opinions.

Players: Two students. Student A as Susie and student B as Barman.

Situation: Susie and Barman are talking about traditional food.

Student A

(Susie) TellBarman that your favorite food is the traditional food from Palembang, empek-empek. You give your opinions on this traditional food. You compare it to the traditional food from your own town/city, and give some reasons to support your opinions. The subjects to be compared are: the ingredients, the ways of cooking and the taste. You are free to express your opinions and to give the reasons. Please do not forget to use the correct expressions in English.

Student B (Barman)

You give your opinions on the traditional food from Manado, bubur Manado. You give your opinion why you really like this food. You may comment on the ingredients, the spicy used, the taste, the deliciousness, and the nutrition. You give some reasons to support your opinions. You are free to express your opinions and to give the reasons. Please do not forget to use the correct expressions in English.

Susie: Do you know what my favorite traditional food is?

Barman: No, I have ever known.

Susie: It is empek-empek from Palembang. I really like this traditional food because it is fresh, delicious, sour, sweet, and hot in one taste. There is similar traditional food from Bandung (sio may) but it is not as delicious as empek-empek. The ingredients are similar, the way of cooking is also similar, but we need to fry the empek-empek before we serve. What’s your favorite traditional food, Barman?

Barman: I really likethe traditional food from Manado, bubur Manado. I think it is healthy eating bubur Manado because the ingredients include rice, various vegetable, pumpkin, and yam. These are rich in calories, carbohydrate and vitamins. Bubur Manado is served with salty fish and sauce consisting of chili, tomato, onion, garlic, and special lemon juice. The taste is really delicious and it is rich of nutrition.

Theme: Making and Explaining Choices.

Players: Two students. Student A as Bram and student B as Wanda.

Situation: The two students are in a restaurant. They are discussing about the food they will order. They make their own choices and give the reasons why they like the food.

Student A (Bram)

You ask Wanda what kind of food she will order: seafood, steak, or barbecue. You tell Wanda that you like seafood. You choose the seafood you like to order. You explain to Wanda why you choose that food. You expand the given information to achieve creative dialog. Please do not forget to use the correct expressions in English.

(Wanda)

You like spicy food. You choose the chicken barbecue you like to order. You explain to Bram why you choose that food: the taste (spicy, hot, gravy, sweet, or delicious). You expand the given information to achieve creative dialog. Please do not forget to use the correct expressions in English.

Bram : What would you like to order, Wanda, seafood, steak, or barbecue?

Wanda : I’d like to order spicy food. Is there any chicken barbecue? What about you Bram? What would you like to order?

Bram :

I like seafood very much, so I’d like to order seafood.

Wanda :

Why do you so fond of seafood?

Bram :

Yes, I like it so much because seafood is sweet, delicious and it is rich in

protein but low fat. I can eat it with tomato sauce, chili sauce or soya

bean. What about you? Why do you choose chicken barbecue?

Wanda :

I like chicken barbecue because it is delicious and the fat is lower than beef or other meat. It is rich in protein but low calories.

Theme: Assessing One's Own Ability.

Players: Two students. Student A as Donna and student B as Aggie.

Situation: The two students have just graduated from a university, and they are looking for a job.

Student A (Donna)

You start the discussion. You tell Aggie that you have just read an advertisement in the daily local newspaper informing that a foreign company is looking for male and female secretaries who are good at spoken and written English. You wish to apply for this position, and ask Aggie to apply, too. You are optimistic that you will pass the test because your English is very good.

Student B (Aggie)

You tell Donna that you are from the English program, but you are not interested in that position. You are really like to be an English teacher because being a teacher is enjoyable, relaxing, and you have much time for the family. You tell Donna that you will apply for the English teacher because you like teaching. Therefore, you refuse to apply for this job because you are not interested in being a secretary.Please do not forget to use the appropriate expressions in English.

Donna: Aggie, I have just read an advertisement in Java Post. There is a foreign company looking for male and female secretaries who are good at spoken and written English. I am interested in applying for this position. Are you interested in applying for this position?

Aggie : I am sorry, but I am not interested in that position. I really like to be an English teacher because being a teacher is enjoyable, relaxing, and I have much time for the family. I will apply for the English teacher because I like teaching. Once again I am sorry for not joining you. I am not interested in being a secretary at all.
