Foreword
The GHPSS is a school-based survey of third-year students in dentistry, medicine, nursing and/or pharmacy intended to
collect information among health professions students that will help Member countries to monitor tobacco control
efforts, improve the training of health students and improve tobacco cessation services. Also, GHPSS can be used to
evaluate the effectiveness of the provisions of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and evaluate tobacco
cessation training offered to these future health professionals.
GHPSS is composed of a core questionnaire designed to gather data on topics related to the prevalence of tobacco use,
exposure to second-hand smoke, training and knowledge about the health effects of tobacco use, attitudes about
tobacco and cessation of tobacco use.
This factsheet presents data from third-year students enrolled in medical schools across seven countries of the
South-East Asia Region collected from 2005 onwards.

The GHPSS indicators are categorized by domains and then coupled to the related Articles of the Framework
Convention, in order to provide context and an overview of these indicators.

All related indicators are grouped according to their domains. However, Member States were free to adapt the
questionnaire according to their needs and resources. Hence, a dash (-) in a cell denotes the absence of certain
indicators in those countries.

Percentages reflect the prevalence of each indicator in each group and not the distribution across groups.

Definitions of Indicators:
Students
nStudents who were enrolled in the third year of medical school training

preceding the survey.

nStudents who used tobacco products other than cigarettes on at least
besides cigarettes
one day during the month preceding the survey.
Exposure to second-hand
nStudents who reported being exposed to SHS at home during the seven
smoke (SHS) and support for
days preceding the survey.
Attitude and knowledge
nOpinions of students towards smoking a cigarette, their knowledge on
the harmful effects of smoking, and on the roles and responsibilities of
health professionals.
