To ask a child what his or her name is, you say the following: Siapa nama kamu?
Siapa nama Ibu? (For female) Siapa nama Bapak? (For male)
To ask someone’s name who is of similar age, then you say the following: Siapa nama anda/ saudara?
To ask about a third person’s name, use dia/ ia (his/her): Siapa nama dia?
To tell someone your name, you say the following: Nama saya adalah _______.
To ask who a person is, you say the following:
Siapa dia? (The word dia is the third person singular for female or male). In Indonesian, the use of adalah is optional.
Thus one can say the following:
Nama saya adalah Nano. (or) Nama saya Nano. (My name is Nano.) Nama dia adalah Mala. (or) Nama dia Mala. (Her name is Mala.)
Be sure to put the words in the right order, as saya nama means “I am the name.”
