Personal Appearance
In this lesson, you will learn how to describe a person’s physical appearance, including his or her clothing, and how to ask about someone’s appearance. You will become familiar with terms that are used to describe personal features like hair color, height, and articles of clothing.

Grammar Note:
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun, and it is always placed after the noun or pronoun it describes. The negative bukan (no or not) is used to negate nouns and pronouns, while tidak (no or not) is used to negate adjectives or verbs.
Serdadu cakap The handsome soldier Tante Helen gemuk sekali. Aunt Helen is very fat. Melody cantik. Melody is beautiful. Nano tidak kurus. Nano is not skinny.
Rulli memang cakap. Rully is indeed handsome.
The singular and plural forms of nouns are usually the same. Plurality or singularity is indicated by the context or by using words such as semua or banyak (all, many, and so on). Plurality can also be
indicated by adding the number two after the noun or simply saying the word twice.
Hampir semua orang Indonesia berkulit gelap. Nearly all Indonesians are dark-skinned. Bayi kembar itu cantik. Those twin babies are pretty.
Note that the “to be” verb adalah is not used with the adjective. Also, adalah can never be followed by a verb.
The prefix ber can be added to nouns and verbs. When added to nouns, the noun becomes the direct object of the sentence.

The possessive pronoun nya (his/her/theirs/its) is placed after the noun.
Rambutnya pirang. Her/his hair is blonde.
Wajah anaknya berbercak-bercak. His/her child's face is freckled. Tinggi badannya 1, 5 meter. His height is 1.5 meters.
Nya can also replace the English definitive article “the.”
Orangnya tinggi dan cakap. The person is tall and handsome.
The Indonesian language does not distinguish gender. Therefore, dia can mean either male or female. Also, nya might mean male or female.

No, he doesn’t wear glasses. Tidak, dia tidak berkaca mata. d.) What color are your eyes? Apa warna mata anda?
My eyes are blue. Warna mata saya biru.
e.) How tall is he and Berapa tinggi dan berat? how much does he weigh?
He is 70” tall and weighs 185 pounds. Tingginya 1.75 m dan berat 185 pounds.
5. Translate the following descriptions into Indonesian. Check your answers with the Answer Key.
A. She is tall and skinny. She is about 30 years old. She has curly blond hair, green eyes, and fair skin.
B. He is about 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 200 pounds. He is about 45 years old. He has short gray hair, blue eyes, and a freckled, ruddy complexion.
