INTRODUCTION
Background
ofthe Study
Human share the ideas through language. The manifestation
of
language rsthrough
communication.According
to
Geoffrey Leech
in
his book
Semantics, language has at leastfive
functionsin
society.1-
Conveying information (informational)2-
Expressing the speaker's orwriter's
feeling or attitude (expressive)3.
Directing or influencing the behavior or attitudes of others (directive)4.
Creating an artistic efflect (aesthetic)5.
Maintaining social bonds (phatic)Seeing the functions
of
language above,it
is believed that languageis
an essentialpart
of
humanlife-
We
use languageto
deliver our
messagesto
ottrcrpeople.
And of
course,we
need someiorm of
ianguageto
deliver our
messagesthrough
communication.The
form
of
communicationcan
be divided into
two
types, verbal
communication
and
non-verbal. communication.
Vetbal
commtmication deals
with
how
we share our ideas using our voices. Meanwhile, non-verbal communication dealswith
language as embedded processof
human competenceto
conveyide4
emotion, desire,critical,
etcwithout
voices such as gestures, pictures, signs, codes, etc.As
I

communication. Graffiti is
an
activity
of
painting
pictureson
the wall.
Graffrti is
wall
pictureswhich
use composition such ascolor,
lines, shapes, andvolume
to write
words, sentences, andto
draw pictures. Nowadays,graffiti
artist usually (nameof
personwho
does thegraffiti
activities) uses spray paint as theirtool to
maketheir
graffiti
on
thewall.
Before humaninvent
spraypaint,
graffiti
commonly was madeby
chalk and paintbrush-Wall
painting activities is started fromprimitive
times. In that time,graffiti
was a mediaof
spiritual
and mysticalto

In
ancientEgypt times,
graffiti
was locatedin
pyramid walls-
In
this time,graffiti

And
thehistory
goesto
ancient Rome Empire.In
the
ancient Rome, thegraffiti
activities were usedto
show thewar victory
processin
conquering otherEmpires. When Christian
was
prohibited
in
Rome,
graffiti
was
used
asgovemment's propaganda
to
discredit Christian people. Besidesthat graffiti
wasalso used
to
criticize
government becauseof
unsatisfactoryof

the government.The existence of
different
social class causes ttredifficulty
to certaingoup
of
societyin
expressingtheir art
activities-As
a result
of
this
condition,
those groupsutilize
mediawhich
availablein
mostof city
part,walls. Most
of graffiti
works illustrates the rmsatisfactory toward social condition.Since
graffiti
is anactivity
of
drawing picturesin
wall,
we can say thatin
graffiti,
wewill
find
many signswithin.
The purposeof graffid
anist isto
deliver their messages though their signs that they create through thewall. In
70's,graffiti
spread
to
America and
Europe.In
this time, graffiti
was
usedas
a
group
of
people'sidentity,
Besides spreading thegraffiti
in town's
walls, thegraffiti
artist alsodraw
their graffiti
picturesin
subway'swall. City
authorities consider thisgraffiti
attitude as vandalism activities. In Unites State of America, every state hasits own law to
vaguegraffiti.
San Diego,California
andNew
York
has releasedtheir regulation about
graffiti.
They declare ttratgraffiti
isillegal
activities.In
graffiti field,
there
is
a
famousgraffiti artist
namedBanksy-
He
isbelieved
to
be a nativeof

England andto
have beenborn

thereis
substantialpublic
uncertainty about hisidentity
and personal andbiogaphical
details.His
worksis

Kingdom
near London, Banksy continues to gain international recognitionand fame
for
his
graf6ti. The fact
is
that
Banksy's "street

has
becomeimmensely popular
with
both pedestrians and privateart
collectorsalike.
In
thelast
several years,there have
beena
number
of
exhibitions
and
auctions
of
Banksy's art
work
as his popularity hassoared-Banksy uses rats as images in many of his pictures. His most famous sffeet

black-and-white stenciled rats-Many of
theserats

The rats
have become immenselypopular
with
London
pedestrians.A

CHAPTER
4CONCLUSION
In
conclusion,I
found thelinguistic
sign and non-
linguistic
signin
someof
Banksy's graffities.
In
the graffiti,
I
identified
the linguistic sign from
thewords,
phrases, sentences,and texts. The non
-
linguistic
signsare
classifiedthrougfu the sign of the
graffiti.
The demand
of
this
research isto
categorizetle
linguisic
sign and non-linguistic sign
in
thesesigns and
meanings expressedby
Banksy through his
graffities. In this research,I
found thatall of
signs are combinedwith
combinationof
linguistic sign and non
-
linguistic
sigr.
After
this
languagephenomenon,
I
concludedthat
it
is
easierfor graffili
viewer
to
comprebend thesign
wittr linguistic
siga
The meaning
of
the
signis not
definedonly
by dividing
it
into linguistic
sign
and
non
-
linguistic
sign. Roland Barthes
atrrss
that
meaning include
denotationmd
connotation,both
of
meaning as ordersignification.
I
found
thatthe meaning
of
signsin
Banksy's graffities plays important roles, since thefactor
that
influencesthe
readeror
the viewer
of
Banksy's
graffities is
basedon
themeaning ofthese signs, especially the connotative meaning
in
contextsof
graffiti.
Based on
graffiti
artist such as Banksy, these signsin
his graffities containsocial
critic
messages.This
researchis
conductedto
transform
the
society perspectiveabout
graffiti.
Most
governmentswith
their power
propagate thesociety that
graffiti
is oneof
form
of
vandalism. They believe thatgrdffiti
shouldbe

cities
wall.
This
researchprov€s
that Banksy's graffities
isimportant
ta
anaLyze. Throughgraffiti,
Banksy wants totell
us thatgraffiti
is not avandalism
activrty. Through
graffiti,
Banksy wants
to
criticize
governmentcapitalistic system which naffows the freedom to express.
Finally, Banksy's graffrties
with
the
sign
is
not
only
the matter
of
vandalism.
or

but
also as
a
medium
to
express ideasand
to
criticize
the govemment and big corporations.REFERENCES:
