ABSTRACT

There are many technique which can be used in teaching and learning process an one of them is group work. Group work has the power to encourage the writing habit in a good a way. It enables students to work together on writing in different ways. In writing, the technique group work can helps the students to improve their knowledge and add their vocabulary from their mistakes in writing. The objectives of this research was to know the influence of group work towards students’ descriptive writing ability at the first semester of the tenth class at SMA YADIKA NATAR Lampung Selatan.

To conduct this research, the writer used experimental method and the number of population was 75 students. The writer took two classes as the sample of this research. The writer used total sampling technique to take the sample of this research. To know the students’ ability, the writer gave writing test that was by asking the students to write a paragraph about descriptive text at least 150 words. To know the influence of group work towards students’ descriptive writing abilty.

After analyzing the data by using , it was found that at significance level 1% and 5% = 2.66 and 1.99 and t ratio 3.97 it menas that , so there is positive influence of using group work towards

students’ descriptive writing abilty at the second semseter of the tenth class at SMA YADIKA NATAR Lampung Selatan in 2014/2015. Therefore, the English teacher can use group work is suitable technique for teaching writing, especially in descriptive writing ability in the class.

English is the international language that has been learned by all people in the world. By learning English the students are expected to be able to get more knowledge and information about everything around the world. Someone uses the language not only for communication but also for getting knowledge,job, and other things as well. And the language itself is very important in humans life. People cannot understand what the other people say if he does not know the language that they use. It means that it is hard to do all of our activities and to fulfill all off our needs without using the language.

For the students in indonesia, English has position as the first foreign language. It has given the influence to indonesians’s students on their English learning. Learning a foreign language such English is not the same as learning mother tongue. In learning English , the students need much time to use English in daily life while English is only found in English teaching learning process at classroom and it is quite difficult to learn a foreign language because it has so many differences for instance different in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and some of aspects in foreign language are not familiar to us. The differences of structure can occur if the students have lack of knowledge in grammar.

In teaching and learning , the English teacher should give more attention on the writing skills. Writing skills is very important skill not only in formal education but also informal education. By writing the students can express their ideas or opinions , thoughts, and feelings to other people. Writing skills must be practiced and learned through experience, writing also involves composing, which implies the ability either to tell or retell pieces of information in the form description.

good methods the students will be intersted in learning English, especially in learning writing descriptive text.

Based on the preliminary research at SMA YADIKA NATAR LAMPUNG SELATAN, the writer found that the students got difficulties in writing descriptive text, they felt confuse to express their ideas in written from grammatically,and the students only focus on the result they did not on the writing process itself. The writer also found that the teacher has never used group work teach writing in descriptive text.

One of methods that can be used in teaching writing descriptive text is group work, teaching writing through group work will increase students interest to learn English especially writing descriptive text.

The objectives of research are :

1. To know and desribe whether there is a positive influence by using group work towards students’ ability in writing descriptive.

2. To know and describe whether there is significance different between the average score the students’ ability writing descriptive text who are taught by using group work.

METHOD

To conduct this research, the writer used experimental method and the number of population was 75 students. The writer took two classes as the sample of this research. The writer used total sampling technique to take the sample of this research. To know the students’ ability, the writer gave writing test that was by asking the students to write a paragraph about descriptive text at least 150 words.

The population on this research was taken from SMA YADIKA Natar of the tenth class of the first semester in 2014/2015. There are two clases at the tenth clases and total population 75 students. In this research, the writer took two classes as the sample they are as a experimental class and as a control class. The experimental class consists of 36 students from 36 students that was taught by using group work technique. The control class cosists of 39 students from 39 students that was taught by using the conventional technique.

average score than those who learned descriptive writing through individual writing.

In the class the writer found that the students confused and didn’t understand about the material. After further explanation, the students then understood and were more creative in the class because they could share and discuss the mistake about the material with their group.

The result of research showed appropriated with the writer expected. It based on the writer hypothesis, the writer assumed that group work is a good technique for teaching writing.

CONCLUSION

Based on the result of the research, the writer would like to make some conclusions as follow

1. There is positive influence of group work towards students’ descriptive writing ability at first semester of the tenth class at SMA YADIKA Natar Lampung Selatan in 2015/2016. It is also suported by data analysis calculating which ( )

2. The average score of the students who are taught by using group work descriptive writing ability in experimental class is higger than that of thoose who are taught without using group work descriptive writing ability of the tenth class at SMA YADIKA NATAR Lampung Selatan in 2015/2016.

So, group work is highly effective way for students in improving writing skill, especially in writing descriptive text.
