VALIDATION AND ESTIMATION OF SODIUM BENZOATE AND VITAMIN B6 IN ENERGY DRINKS BY
DERIVATIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRY ABSTRACT
Energy drinks are beverages which able to produce energy composed of multivitamins, macronutrients, taurine and caffeine with or without allowed preservatives. Vitamin B6 and sodium benzoate are the materials most commonly found in its composition. This research aims to determine whether derivative spectrophotometry method can be used to analyze sodium benzoate and vitamin B6 in energy drinks based on the results of method validation.
The research was done using derivative spectrophotometry method by zero crossing with energy drinks as sample, coded by K and M, and HCl 0,1 N as solvent used. Determining of sodium benzoate and vitamin B6 in energy drinks performed on second order derivative spectrum at wavelength 245,4 nm and 307,4 nm, respectively.
The results showed, sodium benzoate in samples obtained are (500.9053 ± 13.7673) mg/kg for K and (535.8487 ± 5.6856) mg/kg for M, complied with SNI 01-0222-1995 regulation of 600 mg/kg. Vitamin B6 obtained are (9.2559 ± 1.9914) for K and (16.7028 ± 0,0001) mg for M, fulfilled requirement of BPOM Number HK.00.05.23.3644 of 100 mg/day. Percent recovery of sodium benzoate and vitamin B6 is 92.28% and 100.77% respectively, indicates good accuracy of this method. Method precision is good as the results of relative standard deviation are 6.1231% and 8.5484%, respectively for sodium benzoate and vitamin B6.
From the result of this research, we can conclude that based on method validation for benzoic acid and vitamin B6 is 92.28% and at 100.77%, respectively, can be determined using derivative spectophotometry method.
