ABSTRACT

Sepsis is infection of the blood or presence of pathogenic microorganisms or their toxin in the blood that will lead to formation of cytokines and protein synthesis. One of the abnormalities in sepsis is differential cell count. Differential cell counting is a blood count in which the percentages of cell types are calculated. Differential cell count composed of basophils, eosinophils, neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes.

The purpose of this study was to identify the differential count values for sepsis patients in Internal Medicine Department in, Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung in year 2009 and to identify differential count value according to common etiologies for sepsis patients. It was a retrospective study based on medical records.

From 145 subjects for the research, only 45 (31.03%) subjects were able to be used for analysis because 100 (68.97%) subjects contained incomplete information. Most of the patients had sepsis due to pneumonia and tuberculosis. From this study, the median for basophils and eosinophils count was 0%. The median for segmented neutrophils was 85.00%. The median for band neutrophils was 0.0%. The median for lymphocytes and monocytes are 11.00% and 1.00%.

Most of the patients had normal value of basophils and eosinophils. Most of the patients had increased in segmented neutrophils and decreased in band neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes. Differential cell count can be used for diagnosis in sepsis patients.
