ABSTRACT
Though English still remains a foreign language in Indonesia, the competence in it is needed to compete in globalized world. This fact has caused many Javanese to learn English and turned them to become Javanese English users as they started to actively use it in spoken and written forms. However, being Javanese English users might bring challenges for the Javanese to position themselves as they blend in the society. Indeed, Javanese English users need to be aware of their multilingual identity and the ways they negotiate their identity. This study aims particularly to examine the perceptions of eight students of English Language Education (ELE) program of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Salatiga on the negotiation of their Javanese identity when using English. The data were collected using semi-structured interview and analyzed using content analysis. The results of the interviews were mostly emerged within four themes; two were adapted from Zacharias (2012) and the other two were adapted from Vasilopoulos (2015): (1) legitimizing English self through acceptance from NS, (2) backgrounding Javanese identity to project desirable English language use, (3) strategic language choice and language use, and (4) natural expression of L2 identity.
