MEASURING FLUENCY AND ACCURACY IN THE ORAL PRODUCTION OF INDONESIAN BILINGUAL PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Samuel Michael Driyanto

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the fluency and accuracy in Indonesian bilingual primary school. One research question were asked, “Would the pre-planned and the non-planned tasks have a significant difference in the students’ fluency and accuracy in speaking English?”. Eight students of Bethany School were selected as the participants of the research. The data were collected using two approaches (Ellis & Barkhuizen, 2005), i.e. non-planning and pre-planning. After that, the data were used to measure the fluency and accuracy of the participants’ speech: Here, the fluency involved: the speech rate, number of pauses, false starts, and repetitions, while accuracy was using: the error per 100 words. The data were calculated statistically using Paired Sample t-Test. The result of the study showed that statistically there was no significant difference in participants’ speech rate and repetition. On the other hand, there was a significant difference in students’ number of pauses, false starts, and grammatical error per 100 words.
