1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. The Background of the Study

Language is means of communication, which is used by every single

person to communicate with the other people. Moreover, language is the

system of communication in speech and writing that is used by people of a

particular country or area (Hornby, 2005:862). While Richards and Schmidt

(2002:283) stated language is the system of human communication which

consists of the structured arrangement of sounds (or their written

representation) into larger units, e.g. morphemes, words, sentences,

utterances. Therefore, by using language we do not only express our ideas but

also give information to the other people. It is hard to understand what the

other people say, without using language. Therefore, language is very

important because it is used every day in our activity and people need

language to express their opinions, emotions, and desires either in speaking.

In Indonesia, English is one of the foreign languages. As a developing

country, Indonesia needs many kinds of information from other countries to

make this better. Based on the importance of English language above, the

purpose of teaching English is to enable the students to acquire the working

(16)

2

There are four skills that the students have to acquire the working

knowledge, they include reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Here,

reading has occupied the most places in English language skills. The writer

wants to describe about reading skill. Reading is an important ability for

students and for academic purposes. In the widespread of knowledge using

internet and many other modern media, the ability to read becomes more

important. One will fail to get and understand the information written in many

printed media unless he has the ability to read. It means that in order to

understand and get useful information, one must have the ability to read.

Most students rarely read and some only read limited books or texts. They are usually discouraged to read. They rarely associate reading with an enjoyable activity. Students usually dislike and avoid reading. For them, reading is boring and pointless activity. Reading is viewed as 'too difficult', and texts which are available for them in class or English books are often unimaginative and not conducive to enticing them to read for pleasure. This condition is caused by the low and limited vocabulary mastered by students. Students do not have enough vocabulary to read and this makes reading an uninteresting activity. Most rural secondary school students’ problems occur because of limited vocabulary. As Grabe (1983) points out that second language readers “invoke a unique set of constraints,’ the most significant of

(17)

3

From the explanation above, the writer concludes that most of students deal with some problems in comprehending text. They did not understand what the text about because they lacked of vocabulary. They were uncomfortable with the language therefore they were easily frustrated when they found some difficult words. Furthermore, inability to apply reading strategy makes the students have a problem in comprehending text. Because of that, the students read slowly word by word with the result is they are confused with the meaning of the text.

Learning English is not easy. Sometimes students have difficulty in studying it, which are caused by several factors; external factors and internal factors. In practice, the writer has found external factors and internal factors in teaching and learning English reading in SMK N 2 Purwodadi. The internal factors, such as the students are less interested in learning the English language, including the lack of students’ understanding of vocabulary and

grammar, some students assume that English is difficult. In general, the other problems are low motivation, bad study habit, and attitude toward learning. However external factors, such as the classroom condition, that can hamper them in learning English in the classroom. In learning reading the problems were related to the problem in understanding the main idea of the text, problems in finding both implicit and explicit information, and problems related to the topic and the length of the text.

(18)

4

ensure success not only in learning English but also learning in any content class, where reading in English is required. With the strong of reading skills, learners will make greater progress and development in all other areas of learning (Nunan, 2003: 69). Therefore, learning is not easy but the students can learn English by reading. The students can read English fluently and the students will get information, enjoyment, pleasure, etc.

The aim of teaching reading at school is to develop the students’

reading skill so they can understand English text efficiently and effectively. The goal of English teaching and learning process in Vocational High School especially in the eleventh year students is to help students understand English text and make the students apply the language in real life. In teaching learning process, the students can use things around them as the materials. For example, the students can use newspaper, magazine, internet blog, and boxes of cosmetic as the teaching learning materials. It is supposed that the students are able to implement skill using authentic texts.

Based on the fact and the statement above, the writer will conduct a research at the eleventh year students of SMK N 2 Purwodadi in academic year of 2015/2016. Therefore, this research is entitled A Descriptive Study on the Mastery of Reading of the Eleventh Year Students of SMK N 2 Purwodadi in Academic Year of 2015/2016.

describes the condition of an object or its event without taking general

conclusions. In this study, the word “descriptive” means to describe the

The teacher must be a guide and consultant when the students get problem in their study. The teacher also can give the remedial lesson to the students who get low mark or under criteria of minimum. For the students who get high mark or more than criteria of minimum, the teacher can give enrichment to the students.
