English Translation 4. Snakes we eat

Pythons like Woma pythons, Carpet pythons and Children’s pythons, these are good meat that people used to eat. And we still eat them today. Th ese are not dangerous. Th ey are quiet snakes. You can catch them by the nose.

We toast them in the fl ames and turn them over and then we roll up the tail in a ball and put it under the fi re in the ashes. Th ey cook there until they are done. Th en we get them out and cut them into small pieces and then we eat them. Th e meat is good and there is white fat inside.

5. Yurnturrkunyu - Woma - Black headed python - Aspidites melancephalus

Th is is a long python with black or brown and yellow stripes across its back, its nose is black and its tummy is yellow. It doesn’t bite. It moves slowly around the rocks, through the

spinifex and along the creeks. When we see their track we follow them to the hole where they have gone in. Aft er digging them out we hit them with a crowbar or stick.

6. Yintajirrki - Carpet python - Morelia bredli

Th is python is also good meat and it is a big snake. It goes up trees and also along the ground but its home is up high. It fl ies down from the trees. Th en it squeezes its prey. It moves quickly through the trees. Th ey wind themselves around the branches. Th ey don’t bite.

7. Rdajalpa - Children’s python - Liasis childreni

Th is snake is good to eat and it has patterns. It is shorter than the Woma pythons. It has a big body , a small nose a small neck and from there it becomes thicker. It moves around on the ground, climbs up trees and lives in burrows made by other animals.

8. Ngawininyi - Carpet python - Morelia spilotes / python variogatus

Th is python is good meat. It has yellow and black patterns. It lives in hollows and goes into burrows. It sneaks along the ground looking for its prey.

9. Pirntina - Woma python - Aspidites Ramsayi

Th is python is shorter than the black headed python. It is striped black and reddish. It lies in goanna burrows. It is dangerous and can bite you when you are digging for goanna. If this happens you swell up aft er a bite from this python. Th is python sings its prey before attacking. It sings them until they are dead or dying, mice or goannas, and then it swallows them.

10. Ngalyipi - Stimson’s python - Anateresia stimsoni

Th is python is another big snake, long and thick like the Morelia bredli. It doesn’t climb trees. It lives around burrows. It goes into rabbit holes and eats the rabbits and then it goes to sleep in the burrow. We fi nd them when we are digging and we kill them. Th is python is good meat for us to eat.

(25)
