Welcome to Saint

Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church

Father Paul Buchanan,

Ordained to the Order of Priesthood June 28

CHARLOTTE —— The Diocese of Charlotte will be blessed with three men ordained

to the holy priesthood on June 28: Deacon Paul Buchanan, Deacon Noah Carter

and Deacon Paul McNulty. The Catholic News Herald recently interviewed each of

them to help our readers and the parishioners of our diocese get to know them

better. Here is our own Father Paul Buchanan’’s responses:

CNH

: What are some of your interests and hobbies?

Buchanan

: I enjoy reading, spending time with friends and family, and learning

new things about other people and other cultures. Being abroad for so long has definitely helped me

appreciate my home even more, so I've become very interested in all things North Carolina –– especially my

alma mater, the University of North Carolina. As Bill Currie once said, "Nobody ever gets over being a Tar

Heel," and I've found that to be very true. I still enjoy watching Carolina play just about anything, especially

when we beat Duke, which happens a lot.

CNH

: When did you first realize you had a vocation to the priesthood?

Buchanan

: I can't remember a particular moment, but the first time I decided to tell my family was after

World Youth Day in Toronto with Pope St. John Paul II. I will always be grateful to my parents for their

complete support of my pursuit of a vocation to the priesthood, in spite of any sacrifices they had to make

because of it.

CNH

: Who has helped you or mentored you during these years of discernment and seminary?

Buchanan

: The parish priests at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, both the diocesan priests and the Capuchins,

have always provided a tremendous amount of support and encouragement, before and during my time in

the seminary. I'm also extremely grateful to the priests of the diocese who have mentored me during my

summer assignments (Father John Putnam, Monsignor Richard Bellow and Father Benjamin Roberts), and for

the wonderful priestly example of Monsignor Mauricio West, Bishop Emeritus William Curlin, and especially

Bishop Peter Jugis.

CNH

: What would you like to say to young men who may have a call to the priesthood?

Buchanan

: There are lots of reasons to do lots of different things with your life, but there's only one reason to

become a priest: that is, if you think that's what God is calling you to be. Get to know Jesus Christ and come

to love Him, by letting Him into your life through prayer and the sacraments. Trust Him to provide for the

rest. Don't be afraid!

CNH

: Are there any comments you would like to share with our readers about becoming a priest in the

Diocese of Charlotte?

Buchanan

: I cannot wait to begin to live out my new identity as a priest, ordained for the service of the

People of God in the Diocese of Charlotte, in communion with our bishop and our priests, as we all journey

together on our pilgrimage toward the Lord. Please pray for us; know of my prayers for all of you!

Readings for the Week

First Reading —— Peter was in prison, but prayer by the church was made to God on his behalf (Acts 12:1-11). Psalm —— The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him (Psalm 34).

Second Reading —— I have finished the race; I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18). Gospel —— Simon Peter said, ““You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”” (Matthew 16:13-19). Today’’s Readings

Peter and Paul

Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a saint’’s day that replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of these days, given the official rank of ““solemnity,”” are considered so foundational and primal to the mission of the Church that they can interrupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul today.

In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times, they might receive a nudge from God, much the same as many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply rooted in their faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call to spread the Good News of his death and resurrection. Perhaps we might identify more with one or the other, but the essential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and make the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable human beings, each graced in a particular way for the work of the reign of God. Our Lady of Fatima Procession

All are invited on Sunday, July 13th at 7:30pm to begin our Annual Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. Each month we will gather on the 13th in prayer and devotion to Our Lady reflecting on her appearances to the Children in Fatima in 1917. Read more of the story of Fatima on our website: stacharlotte.com/fatima.

Our Lady of Fatima appeared to the children on the 13th of each month from May to October in 1917. Each year pilgrims relive this experience with a candle lit procession. Pope Francis dedicated his papacy to Our Lady of Fatima so let us pray to our Universal Church for Our Lady's help and

protection. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. A procession is representative of our life journey as the Church, the Bride of Christ, going to meet her Divine Spouse. We offer these processions for an increased devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the conversion of sinners, and for the souls of the faithful departed.

All are welcome to join us for these special evenings of devotion, recitation of the Rosary, reflection on the message of Our Lady, and candle lit processions around our campus.

Polish Mass Honoring Our Lady of Czestochowa And

1st Class Relic of Pope Saint John Paul II

On Sunday, August 24th at 2:00 pm, St. Thomas Aquinas Church will host our Third Annual Diocesan Polish Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Polish priest, Rev. Matt Nycz of Buffalo, NY will be Celebrant and Rev. Mr. James Witulski of St. Thomas Aquinas Church will assist as Deacon. This Mass will fulfill your Sunday Mass obligation.

Confessions in Polish and English will be heard beginning at 1:00 pm. There will also be a Polish Choir singing traditional Marian hymns. Children in their native attire will also be present to honor Our Lady and Pope Blessed John Paul II.

After the Mass, the faithful will have the opportunity to venerate a 1st Class Relic of Pope SAINT John Paul II; a drop of his blood from the day he was shot in 1981, on a piece of his cassock! There will also be a reception with delicious Polish food!

Your donation of Polish or American food is appreciated and can be dropped off before the Mass at Aquinas Hall, which is located across the courtyard from the Church.

So, if you are Polish, or are of Polish heritage, or just love Our Lady and Saint John Paul II, or if you would like to experience another culture, you are invited to attend this very special Mass. For additional information, please phone Mary Witulski at (704) 290-6012.
