LITURGY SCHEDULE
Second Week of Easter
READINGS FOR THE WEEK
ACTIVITY SCHEDULE
As we continue our celebration of the Paschal Mystery, it is fitting that we go over the economy of grace that Christ’s Resurrection established for the world. As the Baltimore Catechismteaches, we share in the merits of Christ and all the saints.
Question 853. How does the Church by means of Indulgences remit the temporal punishment due to sin?
Answer. The Church, by means of Indulgences, remits the temporal punishment due to sin by applying to us the merits of Jesus Christ, and the superabundant satisfactions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the saints; which merits and satisfactions are its spiritual treasury.
Question 854. What do we mean by the
"superabundant satisfaction of the Blessed Virgin and the Saints"?
Answer. By the superabundant satisfaction of the Blessed Virgin and the saints, we mean all the satisfaction over and above what was necessary to satisfy for their own sins. As their good works were many and their sins few ± the Blessed Virgin being sinless the satisfaction not needed for themselves is kept by the Church in a spiritual treasury to be used for our benefit.
Question 855. Does the Church, by granting Indulgences, free us from doing Penance?
Answer. The Church, by granting Indulgences, does not free us from doing penance, but simply makes our penance lighter that we may more easily satisfy for our sins and escape the punishments they deserve.
Question 856. Who has the power to grant Indulgences?
Answer. The Pope alone has the power to grant Indulgences for the whole Church; but the bishops have power to grant partial Indulgences in their own diocese.
Cardinals and some others, by the special permission of the Pope, have the right to grant certain Indulgences.
Question 857. Where shall we find the Indulgences granted by the Church?
Answer. We shall find the Indulgences granted by the Church in the declarations of the Pope and of the Sacred Congregation of Cardinals. These declarations are usually put into prayer books and books of devotion or instruction.
My commentary.
Although the damage done to our souls by sin is often grave and hidden, God helps us to heal. Whenever we speak of “temporal punishment,” we are not talking about an external and arbitrary punishment for sin but the internal harm within us that needs to be remedied. The Church uses the language of law to denote that this harm is objective and is not something that we can simply will away.
When Christ died on the Cross and rose from the dead, He merited more grace than all humanity could ever need His Paschal Mystery is actually infinitely effective.
Jesus could have done just enough to save us, but He chose to merit more out of His Divine Love for us. The saints, following the example of Christ, usually end up meriting more grace than they need to be saved.
Cont’d
This extra grace is properly called “superabundant” since this grace is almost infinite. The more we become like God, the more grace dwells in us. Grace, being a participation in God, has no limit since God is infinite.
Accordingly, our participation in grace is always finite in some sense. Nevertheless, the more we love God, the more grace we possess, and thus, the more grace we can share.
Question 855 is simply reiterating what was said earlier: indulgences do not forgive sin but remove the effects of sin from our souls. Penance remains an essential act because we have to manifest a hatred of sin and an intent to please God. Indulgences aid us in making penitential acts more effective. To use a medical analogy, indulgences are like a multivitamin. Just as vitamins give our bodies needed nutrients but do not replace food, indulgences add to our penitential acts the graces merited by the saints.
Since indulgences are formal relationships of grace, it makes sense that the pope and bishops are the ones dispensing them. An indulgence is a way of uniting our individual acts of penance with the acts of love of Christ and the saints. Since these relationships are meant for the whole Church, it is fitting that those entrusted with the care of the Church universal be the ones organizing them.
All of us should take advantage of indulgences by performing them whenever we can. The next couple of articles will go over what must be done to obtain indulgences in general and particular. On this Divine Mercy Sunday let us rejoice that the Lord has seen fit to share with us many ways to enjoy His Love and Divine Mercy.
In Christ,
Fr. John

ASK FATHER
Question: Do priests go to Confession?
Answer. Yes: but not to themselves. I once had someone ask me if I could just look at a
mirror and give myself absolution, and I could not tell if he was joking or not. In all seriousness priests need to go to Confession just as much as anyone else. I usually go at least once a month. This need does not come from serious sin as much as the need for help in removing venial sins and keeping the right perspective. At least for myself, going to Confession frequently helps me to remember that Reconciliation is a gift from God to help us to love Him and each other more by removing the burden of sin.
