LITURGY SCHEDULE
Fourth Week in Ordinary Time
READINGS FOR THE WEEK
ACTIVITY SCHEDULE
As a priest it gives me great joy to forgive sins; as a pastor it gives me great satisfaction when I can do that and give good advice. I can give such advice when the penitent is being honest with me and with himself. The questions below practically address this need for honesty in confronting what we have done wrong.
Question 789. When is our Confession entire?
Answer. Our Confession is entire when we tell the number and kinds of our sins and the circumstances which change their nature.
Question 790. What do you mean by the "kinds of sin?"
Answer. By the "kinds of sin," we mean the particular division or class to which the sins belong; that is, whether they be sins of blasphemy, disobedience, anger, impurity, dishonesty, etc. We can determine the kind of sin by discovering the commandment or precept of the Church we have broken or the virtue against which we have acted.
Question 791. What do we mean by "circumstances which change the nature of sins?"
Answer. By "circumstances which change the nature of sins" we mean anything that makes it another kind of sin. Thus to steal is a sin, but to steal from the Church makes our theft sacrilegious.
Again, impure actions are sins, but a person must say whether they were committed alone or with others, with relatives or strangers, with persons married or single, etc., because these circumstances change them from one kind of impurity to another.
Question 792. What should we do if we cannot remember the number of our sins?
Answer. If we cannot remember the number of our sins, we should tell the number as nearly as possible, and say how often we may have sinned in a day, a week, or a month, and how long the habit or practice has lasted.
Question 793. Is our Confession worthy if, without our fault, we forget to confess a mortal sin?
Answer. If without our fault we forget to confess a mortal sin, our Confession is worthy, and the sin is forgiven; but it must be told in Confession if it again comes to our mind.
Question 794. May a person who has forgotten to tell a mortal sin in confession go to Holy Communion before going again to confession?
Answer. A person who has forgotten to tell a mortal sin in confession may go to communion before again going to confession, because the forgotten sin was forgiven with those confessed, and the confession was good and worthy.
My commentary.
Our first few questions revolve around confessing
“what” our sins were. It seems very straightforward. Robbed a bank? Confess bank robbery, once. Missed Church for a month?
You can admit to breaking the Third Commandment for a month.
Some sins, however, change based on where they were done and who they were done with. Question 791 gives the examples of theft and purity.
When in doubt about what to call a sin, be generic but accurate. Let’s take lying as an example. A “white lie” is an untruth that is not a serious sin because the matter (what the lie was about) is itself not serious. As a venial sin such lies do not destroy grace. What if someone does not know this term? Calling it a lie about a nonserious matter would suffice.
Cont’d
Calling it a “recreational moment of frivolity stretching the truth at the minor expense of another” would be needlessly confusing.
Don’t do that. Remember Fr. John’s #1 Rule to a Good Confession: no details. If details are needed, the priest will ask.
The last few questions address the limits of memory.
All of us forget things. Some sins become so common for us that we would be hard pressed to give an exact counting of them.
Most of such sins are venial so that we are not required to confess them in number. Some of those sins, however, are mortal and need a number so that both the priest and penitent can see how bad it is. Priests do not have a “sin detector” that measures how much sin a person has. We rely on the penitent’s honesty to evaluate how their sins have harmed them.
One of the chief harms of sin is the emotional and mental turmoil that they cause us. I am not talking about shame or guilt here. As unpleasant as guilt can be, it is helping us to expunge what is upsetting our true peace of soul. Every sin but especially every mortal sin either our will (and so consequently our emotions) or our mind is harmed. By telling the truth and feeling sorrow for the sin, we help to restore ourselves both naturally and supernaturally. Conversely, confession helps us to forget. We are not a people of regret but of hope. The Lord intends for Confession to help reorient us from the pains and traumas of the past towards the good things of heaven. The more honest we can be, the more His Truth will abide in and through us.
In His Sacred Heart,
Fr. John
A further explanation of last weekend’s homily on Ukraine.
In asking everyone to pray and fast for peace in Ukraine, I seem to have given people the
impression that I believe that the United States and Russia will come into direct conflict. Here are the scenarios that I think could play out over the next month.
Scenario 1: Status quo. Russia does not invade Ukraine or remove its government by an internal coup. Likelihood: 10%.
Scenario 2: Invasion/coup. Russia either invades or launches a coup inside of Kiev so that a new government invites them in.
Russia and the United States do not engage in direct fighting.
Scenario 2a: Partial invasion. Russia occupies the eastern part of Ukraine and leaves the west alone. Likelihood 35%.
Scenario 2b: Full invasion/coup. Russia takes all of Ukraine either by force or by installing a new government. Likelihood 35%.
Scenario 3: World War III. The United States and NATO directly fight Russia in a conventional war. Likelihood: 5%.
Scenario 4: Diplomatic Partition. Ukraine is divided between Russia and NATO with the western part of Ukraine becoming a satellite of Poland and Russia annexing the eastern section. 5%
Scenario 5: Something else. 10%.
The more complicated a situation, the more ways it can work out. Ukraine is now a crisis significant enough that almost anything could happen. By attempting to gauge the relative likelihoods of the above scenarios, I hope that everyone is encouraged to think through the matter carefully and for yourself. Whatever your judgment about the chances of war, please pray and fast this week and next.
