A isyah Meylinda Puspitasari, 2016, T he A nalysis of C ode Switching in the Movie E ntitled “T he java heat” (A S ociolinguistics approach). F aculty of C ultural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta.

T he research focuses on the codes that are employed by the characters in the movie entitled “T he J ava Heat”. T he research was conducted to find the types of code switching which are employed in the movie and the functions of the switching.

T he researcher employs a qualitative method to describe the classifications and the functions of the switching. T his research uses sociolinguistics approach and purposive sampling technique. T he source of data is the movie entitled the J ava Heat and the data is taken from the dialogues in the movie.

B loom & Gumperz (1972) classifies the types of code switching based on contextual/ pragmatic approach. T hey are situational code switching and metaphorical code switching. T he data shows only situational code switching that appears in the movie. It means that all of the switching happens because of the change of situations. T here are some situations that influence the code switching such as changing of participants, changing of setting, changing of atmosphere, and changing of norm of situations. Moreover, Poplack (1980) classifies the types of code switching based on grammatical approach. T hey are tag switching, inter sentential code switching, and intra sentential code switching. T he finding shows that there is no intra sentential code switching.

T he analysis shows that there is no metaphorical code switching and intra sentential code switching involved in the dialogue, which both of refer to code mixing. It proves that there is no code mixing that appears in the data.

T here are 6 functions found in the data which are based on the analysis. T hey are: talking about particular topics, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying, expressing group identity, and addressee. T he researcher concludes that the main function of the switching is to show the ethnicity and the intimacy between the speakers.
