Realization of coal production in

HE MINISTRY of Energy and Mineral

Resources (ESDM) ensures that the realization of coal production in the first quarter of 2021 will reach 144 million tons.

Director of Coal Business Development at the Ministry of ESDM, Sujatmiko, said that this achievement is equivalent to 23 percent of the production target set for this year.

"The realization of coal production in the first quarter of 2021 is 144 million tons or 23 percent of the production target of 625 million tons," said Sujatmiko to Kontan.co.id, Wednesday (30/6).

Just so you know, the original target for coal production was 550 million tons. However, the government through the Ministerial Decree (Kepmen) ESDM Number 66.K/HK.02/MEM.B/2021 concerning Amendments to the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 255.K/30/MEM/2020 concerning the Fulfillment of Domestic Coal Needs in 2021 will increase the quota by 75 million tons.

With the presence of this decision, coal production which was originally 550 million tons will be 625 million tons. Meanwhile, this production is intended for export activities.

Mineral (ESDM) memastikan realisasi produksi batubara di kuartal I 2021 men-capai 144 juta ton.

Direktur Pembinaan Pengusahaan Batu-bara Kementerian ESDM Sujatmiko meng-ungkapkan capaian ini setara dengan 23% dari target produksi yang dicanangkan tahun ini.

"Realisasi produksi batubara Triwulan I - 2021 sebesar 144 juta ton atau 23% dari target produksi 625 juta ton," ujar Sujatmiko kepada Kontan.co.id , Rabu (30/6).

Asal tahu saja, semula produksi batubara ditargetkan sebesar 550 juta ton. Namun pemerintah melalui Keputusan Menteri (Kepmen) ESDM Nomor 66.K/HK.02/ MEM.B/2021 tentang Perubahan Atas Keputusan Menteri Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral Nomor 255.K/30/MEM/ 2020 tentang Pemenuhan Kebutuhan Batubara Dalam Negeri Tahun 2021 menambah kuota sebesar 75 juta ton. Dengan hadirnya keputusan tersebut maka produksi batubara yang semula 550 juta ton bakal menjadi 625 juta ton. Adapun, produksi ini ditujukan untuk kegiatan ekspor.

Adapun, 10 perusahaan produsen terbesar untuk raihan produksi pada kuartal I 2021 ini terdiri dari:

However, Sujatmiko was reluctant to elaborate further on the production contri-bution of the 10 companies.

According to Kontan's records, PT Kaltim Prima Coal in the first quarter of 2021 posted a production of 14.5 million tons. PT Adaro Indonesia amounted to 10.80 million tons while PT Kideco Jaya Agung amounted to 9.2 million tons. Total production has even reached 15.1 million tons until May 2021. Meanwhile, the production of PT Arutmin Indonesia in the first quarter of 2021 is 5 million tons and PT Bukit Asam is 4.5 million tons.

Kendati demikian, Sujatmiko enggan merinci lebih jauh kontribusi produksi dari 10 perusahaan tersebut.

Dalam catatan Kontan, PT Kaltim Prima Coal pada kuartal I 2021 membukukan produksi sebesar 14,5 juta ton. PT Adaro Indonesia sebesar 10.80 juta ton semen-tara PT Kideco Jaya Agung sebesar 9,2 juta ton. Jumlah produksi bahkan telah men-capai 15,1 juta ton hingga Mei 2021.

Adapun, produksi PT Arutmin Indonesia pada kuartal I 2021 sebesar 5 juta ton dan PT Bukit Asam sebesar 4,5 juta ton.

was recorded at US$ 3.41 billion. In terms of liabilities in the first quarter of 2021, it was recorded at US$ 3.29 billion. Meanwhile, the company's coal production this year is estimated to be around 85-90 million tons. Previously, he revealed that the coal produced by BUMI's subsidiaries, namely

PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and PT Arutmin

Indonesia, was almost completely ordered until the production period of June 2021. Previously, the company noted that in March 2021 sales rose to 6.8 million tons compared to February's 6 million tons, due to demand improvements. For KPC, sales were recorded at 5 million tons in March, and for Arutmin at 1.8 million tons.

This year, KPC is targeted to reach production of 60-62 million tons, and Arutmin's 25-27 million tons. Thus, overall BUMI targets new coal sales to reach 85-89 million tons throughout 2021, an increase of 4-9% compared to the 2020 realization of 81.5 million tons.

Hal ini pun membuat BUMI mengalami kerugian tahun berjalan US$ 10,02 juta pada kuartal I-2021, kerugian ini menurun 70% dibandingkan kuartal I-2020 senilai US$ 34,85 juta.

Direktur dan Sekretaris Perusahaan Dileep Srivastava mengatakan tahun ini menjadi optimisme sektor batu bara dengan tren kenaikan harga yang diperkirakan bertahan. Kenaikan harga juga disebabkan karena produksi di Australia, Indonesia, dan China terpengaruh oleh pandemi.

"Permintaan, bagaimanapun diperkirakan akan naik da harga batu bara kuat dan kemungkinan akan tetap demikian sepanjang tahun," kata Dileep belum lama ini.

Dia mengatakan produksi di kuartal I-2021 diperkirakan sekitar 20 juta ton yang dipengaruhi oleh faktor cuaca dan tingginya curah hujan. Sementara sepanjang tahun ini produksi batu bara perusahaan diper-kirakan sekitar 85-90 juta ton.

Sebelumnya dia mengungkapkan Batu bara yang diproduksi anak usaha BUMI yakni PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) dan PT Arutmin Indonesia hampir sepenuhnya dipesan hingga periode produksi Juni 2021.

Sebelumnya, perusahaan mencatat pada Maret 2021 penjualan naik menjadi 6,8 juta ton dibandingkan Februari 6 juta ton, karena perbaikan permintaan. Untuk KPC penjualan tercatat menjadi 5 juta ton pada Maret, dan Arutmin 1,8 juta ton.

Tahun ini KPC ditargetkan mencapai produksi 60-62 juta ton, dan Arutmin sebanyak 25-27 juta ton. Dengan begitu, secara keseluruhan BUMI menargetkan penjualan baru bara mencapai 85-89 juta ton sepanjang 2021, naik 4-9% disbanding-kan realisasi 2020 sebanyak 81,5 juta ton.

T THE BEGINNING of this year or until

March 2021, coal production of PT Adaro Energy Tbk (ADRO) on a consolidated basis decreased due to La Nina. ADRO management said that La Nina, which hit most parts of Indonesia, caused heavy rains and high waves. Therefore, hampering logistics and ship loading activities.

Launching a report in the first quarter of 2021, ADRO's coal production decreased 11% yoy to 12.87 million tons. The sales volume also contracted by 13% yoy or to 12.59 million tons. Along with the decline in production and sales, ADRO's operating income was recorded at US$ 692 million, down 8% yoy.

The decline in coal production volume was not experienced by all ADRO corporate entities. In detail, PT Adaro Indonesia (AI) as the largest mining company in the Adaro Group, recorded a coal production volume of 10.80 million tons or decreased 15% yoy in the first quarter of 2021. In 2020, Adaro Indonesia realized coal production of 46.75 million tons or down 9% yoy.

I AWAL tahun ini atau sampai dengan

Maret 2021, produksi batubara PT Adaro Energy Tbk (ADRO) secara konsolidasi mengalami penurunan akibat La Nina. Manajemen ADRO mengatakan, La Nina yang melanda sebagian besar wilayah Indonesia menyebabkan hujan lebat dan gelombang tinggi. Oleh karenanya, menghambat aktivitas logistik dan pemuatan kapal. Melansir laporan di kuartal I 2021, produksi batubara ADRO menurun 11% yoy menjadi 12,87 juta ton. Adapun volume penjualan juga kontraksi hingga 13% yoy atau menjadi 12,59 juta ton. Seiring penurunan produksi dan penjualan, pendapatan usaha ADRO tercatat senilai US$ 692 juta atau turun 8% yoy.

Penurunan volume produksi batubara ternyata tidak dialami seluruh entitas perusahaan ADRO. Perinciannya, PT Adaro Indonesia (AI) sebagai perusahaan pertam-bangan terbesar dalam Grup Adaro, men-catatkan volume produksi batubara sebanyak 10,80 juta ton atau turun 15% yoy pada kuartal I 2021. Adapun di sepanjang 2020, Adaro Indonesia merealisasikan produksi batubara sebesar 46,75 juta ton atau turun 9% yoy.

ADRO manage-ment explained that Lampunut coal, a hard coking coal product from the Maruwai concession, continues to be well received by domestic customers to China and Japan. Meanwhile, coal production from Mustika Indah Permai (MIP) reached 0.22 million tons, up 20% yoy. MIP's coal sales for this period were 0.24 million tons, up 49% yoy. Finally, the sales volume of Kestrel Coal Mine (Kestrel) coal was recorded at 1.33 million tons, or down 30% from the first quarter of 2020. Kestrel sells hard coking coal primarily to large customers in the Asian market with India, South Korea and Japan as its top three sales destinations. This year, Kestrel's salable coal production target is set at 5.74 million tons.

Kemudian, produksi batubara di Balangan Coal Companies pada 1Q21 mencapai 1,18 juta ton, atau naik 2% yoy. Selanjutnya, produksi batu bara Adaro Metcoal Companies (AMC) pada tiga bulan pertama tahun ini mencapai 0,65 juta ton, atau naik 119% yoy dari 0,30 juta ton pada periode yang sama di tahun sebelumnya.

Penjualan batubara AMC pada periode ini men-capai 0,51 juta ton, atau naik 66% yoy. Mana-jemen ADRO menjelaskan batubara Lampunut,

produk batu bara kokas keras dari konsesi Maruwai, terus diterima baik oleh para pelanggan domestik hingga China dan Jepang. Adapun produksi batubara dari Mustika Indah Permai (MIP) mencapai 0,22 juta ton, atau naik 20% yoy. Penjualan batubara MIP untuk periode ini tercatat 0,24 juta ton,atau naik 49% yoy.

Terakhir, volume produksi batu bara Kestrel Coal Mine (Kestrel) yang dapat dijual tercatat mencapai 1,33 juta ton, atau turun 30% dari kuartal I 2020. Penjualan batu bara pada periode ini mencapai 1,30 juta ton, yang setara dengan penurunan 34% yoy.

Kestrel menjual batu bara kokas keras terutama ke para pelanggan besar di pasar Asia dengan India, Korea Selatan dan Jepang sebagai tiga tujuan penjualan tertingginya. Di sepanjang tahun ini, target produksi batu bara Kestrel yang dapat dijual ditetapkan sebesar 5,74 juta ton.

tentang Cipta Kerja secara sistematis dinilai akan semakin meningkatkan ketergantungan terhadap batu bara.

Dosen Fakultas Hukum sekaligus Tenaga Ahli Pusat Studi Energi Universitas Gadjah Mada Irine Handika mengatakan, pada pasal 128A perubahan UU Minerba dalam UU Cipta Kerja disebutkan bahwa pelaku usaha yang melakukan peningkatan nilai tambah batu bara sebagaimana dalam Pasal 102 ayat (2) dapat diberi perlakuan tertentu berupa pengenaan royalti sebesar 0 persen.

Menurutnya, pasal ini membuka peluang adanya peningkatan pemanfaatan batu bara. Pasal 128A harus dibaca satu kesatuan dengan Pasal 102 ayat (2).

Di dalam pasal ini dikatakan bahwa peme-gang IUP atau IUPK pada kegiatan operasi produksi dapat melakukan pengembangan dan/atau pemanfaatan batu bara.

This also raises the question of how to manage the national energy portfolio. "If you look at Article 128A, Article 102 paragraphs (2) and (3), it means the utilization of how to make the most of coal. This is certainly not the mindset that we are fighting for together, so what we need to mitigate, Article 128A will increase the portion of coal in the national energy mix and will systematically overlap with climate adaptation and mitigation targets and programs," he said. bara antara lain dapat berupa coal upgrading,

coal briquetting, pembuatan kokas, pen-cairan batu bara, gasifikasi batu bara ter-masuk underground coal gasification, dan coal slurry atau coal water mixture.

Sedangkan yang dimaksud dengan peman-faatan disebutkan antara lain dengan mem-bangun sendiri pembangkit listrik tenaga uap (PLTU) mulut tambang.

"Ada frasa antara lain, artinya sangat terbuka terminologi pengembangan itu. Artinya, mau Pak Jokowi bilang sekarang setop PLTU setelah 35.000 MW, tapi secara normatif tetap akan ada, siapapun yang memerintah. Di dalam UU Cipta Kerja, UU Minerba, pemanfaatan batu bara masih bisa dilakukan untuk pembangunan PLTU mulut tambang," kata Irine.

Dia melihat bahwa ketentuan dalam Pasal 128A perubahan UU Minerba dalam UU Cipta Kerja, serta Pasal 102 ayat (2) dan (3) UU Minerba hanya menyasar utilisasi batu bara, bukan optimalisasi daya menuju energi bersih seperti yang diharapkan. Hal ini pun memunculkan pertanyaan bagaimana arah pengelolaan portofolio energi nasional. "Kalau lihat Pasal 128A, Pasal 102 ayat (2) dan (3), itu artinya utilisasi bagaimana me-manfaatkan sebesar-besarnya batu bara. Ini tentu bukan mindset yang kita perjuangkan bersama sehingga yang perlu kita mitigasi, Pasal 128A ini akan meningkatkan porsi batu bara dalam bauran energi nasional dan secara sistematis akan tumpang tindih dengan target dan program adaptasi dan mitigasi iklim," katanya. plans to conduct a Limited Public Offering (PUT) to finance the development of copper and gold mining projects in Gorontalo Province. Herwin W Hidayat, Director and Investor Relations of Bumi Minerals, said that the proceeds from the LPO will also be used to build a gold ore processing plant with a capacity of 2,000 tons of ore per day.

In addition, the PUT funds are also used to build mining support facilities (waste dump, sediment pond, powerhouse, warehouse, nursery facility, workshop, town site, explosives warehouse, and office buildings. As well as for drilling activities in several gold prospects in an effort to increase gold ore reserves at the Motomboto (Gorontalo) gold mine; constructing a hauling road infrastructure of more than 30 kilometers with a width of 12 meters and a bridge facility of 75 meters long from the Kunciilato Port to the gold and copper mine site; and to build management facilities Tailings Manage-ment Facility, including ore waste dewatering, tailing dam, and detoxification plant; to purchase heavy equipment, equipment, and mining equipment; to fund working capital needs of the company and/or its subsidiaries.

(Tailing Management Facility), termasuk

pengeringan limbah bijih, tailing dam, dan detoxification plant; untuk pembelian alat-alat berat, perlengkapan, dan peralatan tambang; untuk mendanai kebutuhan modal kerja perusahaan dan/atau anak-anak usahanya. “Manajemen percaya bahwa perusahaan dapat merealisasikan beberapa keuntungan dari pengembangan proyek tambang tembaga dan emas di Gorontalo,” kata Herwin, Rabu (30/6).

emas di Palu, Sulawesi Tengah, meliputi pembangunan pabrik pengolahan bijih emas ketiga dengan kapasitas 4.000 ton bijih per hari, pengeboran prospek emas untuk menambah cadangan bijih emas.

“Dengan tersedianya pabrik pengolahan bijih emas yang baru di Gorontalo, maka perusahaan berharap dapat segera mem-bukukan pendapatan dan laba bersih dari kedua proyek tambang emas di Palu dan Gorontalo dalam waktu dekat,” kata Herwin.

Corporate Secretary of PT Bumi Resources Tbk Dileep Srivastava revealed that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic had indeed had an impact on existing activities. Nevertheless, Dileep ensured, BUMI was still able to maintain its operating level. With an 8% higher coal price and a lower cost of up to 12%, it is claimed to be able to offset the decline in production volume which reached 3%.

"However, a 15% increase in revenue was recorded in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the fourth quarter of 2020 with indications of rising coal prices again and this trend continuing," explained Dileep to Kontan.co.id, Wednesday (30/6). Dileep said that the negative net profit was still due to non-coal factors. Nevertheless, the ability to cut net losses is considered to show a positive change. BUMI successfully cut its net loss to US$ 11.67 million in the first quarter of 2021. In the first quarter of 2020, BUMI's net loss reached US$ 35.09 million.

Just so you know, until the first quarter of 2021 BUMI's coal production reached 19.5 million tons. This achievement was supported by the production of PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) of 14.5 million tons and PT Arutmin Indonesia of 5 million tons. This number is lower than the achieve-ment in the first quarter of 2020 which reached around 21.5 million tons.

Dileep continued, with the improvement in the coal sector marked by the upward trend in coal prices that continued in the second quarter of 2021, his party hopes that significant performance improve-ments can be achieved this year.

Kendati demikian, Dileep memastikan, BUMI masih mampu mempertahankan tingkat operasi. Dengan harga batubara yang 8% lebih tinggi serta biaya yang lebih rendah hingga 12% diklaim mampu menginmbangi penurunan volume produksi yang mencapai 3%.

"Namun, peningkatan pendapatan 15% tercatat pada kuartal I 2021 dibandingkan dengan kuartal IV 2020 dengan indikasi kembali meningkatnya harga batubara dan tren ini terus berlanjut," terang Dileep kepada Kontan.co.id, Rabu (30/6).

Dileep menuturkan, masih negatifnya raihan laba bersih dikarenakan faktor non batu-bara. Kendati demikian, kemampuan me-mangkas rugi bersih dinilai menunjukkan perubahan yang positif. BUMI sukses me-mangkas rugi bersih menjadi US$ 11,67 juta pada kuartal I 2021. Pada kuartal I 2020 rugi bersih BUMI mencapai US$ 35,09 juta. Asal tahu saja, hingga kuartal I 2021 produksi batubara BUMI mencapai 19,5 juta ton. Raihan ini ditopang produksi dari PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) sebesar 14,5 juta ton dan PT Arutmin Indonesia sebesar 5 juta ton. Jumlah ini lebih rendah dari raihan di kuartal I 2020 yang mencapai sekitar 21,5 juta ton.

Dileep melanjutkan, dengan membaiknya sektor batubara ditandai tren kenaikan harga batubara yang berlanjut di kuartal II 2021, pihaknya berharap peningkatan kinerja signifikan dapat diraih di tahun ini.

Aluminum Ingot

Setiap batang aluminium ingot dari Inalum memiliki berat 22,7 kg dengan 2 jenis kualitas produk yaitu 99,90% dan 99,70%. Produk ini juga telah terdaftar pada London Metal Exchange (LME) tanggal 23 September 1987.

However, it turns out, RI's great ideals can be a threat to world nickel consumers. How come?

Steven Brown, a nickel industry practitioner, in an online discussion, Tuesday (29/06/2021) explained that to be able to make an energy transition, approximately 1 million tons of additional nickel metal is needed by 2030.

"To be successful in the energy transition, we need approximately 1 million additional tons of nickel, before 2030 we need an additional 1 million tons of capacity," he said.

According to him, nickel production has continued to increase in recent years, in line with demand growth. As a result, until now there is no shortage of nickel supply. "There is no shortage of nickel at this time, in fact there is still a surplus, a slight excess of production from demand," he said. But unfortunately, he continued, this additional nickel production only occurred in Indonesia. Meanwhile, production abroad has actually decreased. This condition is a good thing for Indonesia, but according to him it will be a threat to outsiders.

Bila selama ini Indonesia hanya bertumpu pada penjualan bijih mentah, namun ke depannya Indonesia akan terus mengem-bangkan industri hilir mineral, termasuk nikel.

Salah satu mimpi besar Indonesia yaitu menjadi pemain kelas dunia untuk baterai, baik untuk kendaraan listrik maupun pembangkit listrik berbasis energi baru terbarukan seperti Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Surya.

Kementerian Badan Usaha Milik Negara (BUMN) pun telah membentuk Holding BUMN industri baterai terintegrasi dari hulu hingga hilir bernama Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC).

Namun ternyata, cita-cita besar RI ini bisa menjadi ancaman bagi konsumen nikel dunia. Kenapa bisa begitu?

Steven Brown, praktisi industri nikel, dalam diskusi secara daring, Selasa (29/06/2021) menjelaskan bahwa untuk bisa melakukan transisi energi, diperlukan kurang lebih 1 juta ton logam nikel tambahan pada 2030. "Untuk bisa sukses transisi energi, kita perlu kurang lebih 1 juta ton nikel tambahan, sebelum tahun 2030 perlu tambahan kapasitas 1 juta ton," ungkapnya.

Produksi nikel selama ini menurutnya terus bertambah dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, sesuai dengan pertumbuhan permintaan. Alhasil, sampai saat ini tidak terjadi kekurangan pasokan nikel.

"Gak ada kekurangan nikel saat ini, malah masih surplus, sedikit kelebihan produksi dari demand," ujarnya.

Namun sayangnya, lanjutnya, penambahan produksi nikel ini hanya terjadi di Indonesia. Sementara produksi di luar negeri malah mengalami penurunan. Kondisi ini merupakan hal baik bagi Indonesia, namun menurutnya ini akan menjadi ancaman bagi pihak luar.

According to him, the increase in production occurred for second-class nickel, such as ferronickel and nickel pig iron (NPI), while there was no growth for first-class nickel. Nickel used for batteries is first-class nickel such as nickel sulfate, while second-class nickel is for stainless steel.

"The growth that has occurred has not yet existed for first-class smelters used for batteries," he added.

He said several first-class nickel smelter projects for batteries have been announced and all of them are in Indonesia. It is estimated that two thirds will be in Indonesia and will be built first.

"Several projects have been announced, almost all of them are in Indonesia. Maybe 2/3 of the pipeline projects are in Indonesia, which will be built first in Indonesia, the non-Indonesian ones are still far from the construction stage," he explained.

He further said that the projects announced in Indonesia were much better due to lower capital costs and shorter construction schedules.

"However, there are a few issues, namely environmental and social, as well as government. When viewed from the existing standards, Indonesia has a higher risk of environmental and social govern-ment than projects outside Indonesia," he explained. (wia)

"Pertumbuhan yang terjadi belum ada sama sekali untuk smelter kelas satu yang digunakan untuk baterai," imbuhnya. Dia mengatakan, beberapa proyek smelter nikel kelas satu untuk baterai sudah diumumkan dan semuanya berada di Indonesia. Diperkirakan, dua pertiganya akan berada di Indonesia dan terbangun lebih dahulu.

"Beberapa proyek di-announced, hampir semua ada di Indonesia. Proyek pipeline mungkin 2/3 ada di Indonesia, yang akan terbangun dulu di Indonesia, yang non Indonesia masih jauh sekali dari tahap konstruksi," jelasnya.

Lebih lanjut dia mengatakan, proyek yang diumumkan di Indonesia jauh lebih baik karena biaya modal lebih rendah dan jadwal konstruksi bisa lebih singkat.

"Namun ada isu sedikit, adalah

environmental dan social, serta govern-ment. Kalau dilihat dari standar yang ada,

EK-ISL's New Technique for

Extracting Metals From Hard

N INTERNATIONAL group of scientists

have developed a new mining technique that uses an electric field, instead of digging, to extract metal from hard rock ore.

In a paper published in the journal Science Advances, the researchers say that their methodology consists of in stalling electrodes inside certain ore bodies and applying an electric current that can induce the transport of electrically charged metals, such as copper, through the rock by a process called electromigration.

This technique is called Electrokinetic in Situ Leaching (EK-ISL) and has previously been applied for metal recovery from fly ash, wastewater sludge, soil and mine tailings material, but not for metal recovery from intact hard rock bodies. In addition to the environmental consequences of such discharges, Prommer and his colleagues point out that the current mining paradigm can be considered unsustainable, because for example, in the last decade there has been a large decline in discovery of shallow copper ore deposits, while average ore cut-off grades have also decreased by about 25 percent.

Copper price set for smallest quarterly gain since March 2020

OPPER prices rose on Wednesday but were set for their smallest quarterly gain since

March 2020 on pressure from a firm dollar and China’s efforts to tame a red-hot metals rally. Copper for delivery in September rose 1.6% from Tuesday’s settlement price, touching $4.335 per pound ($9,537 per tonne) midday Wednesday on the Comex market in New York.

The most-traded August copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange dipped 0.3% to 68,050 yuan a tonne, set for the weakest quarterly gain since March 2020 when China’s recovery from the covid-19 pandemic aided metals prices.

China recently released state reserves of copper, aluminum, and zinc as part of its pledge to control a recent surge in commodities prices.

“For the next quarter, it will be all about how much demand from the rest of the world will be able to offset a slowing China. Most of that will depend on the success of finally getting the virus under control and seeing supply chains recover,” commodities broker Anna Stablum of Marex Spectron told Reuters.

“Aluminum has got a chance to outperform as the environmental restrictions in China will continue to weigh on supply and it seems like the nickel market looks pretty tight,” she added.

HALMEK LITHIUM to work with Metso Outotec on lithium hydroxide

ALMEK LITHIUM has selected Metso Outotec’s patented lithium hydroxide process for

production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide at its greenfield plant in the Tula region in Russia.

The order value, which is not disclosed, has been booked in the company’s Metals June quarter orders received.

Metso Outotec’s scope of delivery consists of the engineering and key equipment supply for the lithium hydroxide process, the basis of which will be the Metso Outotec OKTOP® autoclave plant. The environmentally sound production process is one of Metso Outotec’s more than 100 Planet Positive products, the company said.

Pavel Galchenko, VP, Halmek Lithium, said: “One of the most important tasks in the project was the selection of technology. Instead of the more traditional sulphuric acid processing to produce lithium hydroxide, we decided to choose the Metso Outotec lithium hydroxide process as it is the most promising and environmentally-sound process at the moment.

“The pilot tests conducted at the Metso Outotec Research Center in Pori, Finland, provided excellent results.”

Mikko Rantaharju, Vice President, Hydrometallurgy business line at Metso Outotec, said: “Metso Outotec has developed lithium hard rock-related technologies for some 20 years now. It started with the battery-grade lithium carbonate process and, when the market changed to favour lithium hydroxide, the process flowsheet was converted to directly produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate from spodumene.

“Both of the processes are patented and will be significant assets in our battery chemicals business, meeting the need to produce high-end lithium-ion battery chemistries for the growing market.”

HALMEK LITHIUM’s new hydrometallurgical plant, which will complement its existing lithium hydroxide plant, is currently under construction. As raw material, the new plant will use spodumene concentrate; it will feature a capacity of 20,000 t/y of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate, which is used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles. The first production line is planned to start up in 2023, and the second production line with a capacity of 20,000 t/y is expected to start production in 2026.

More than 100 coal mines in China halt operations for centennial

INERS in China are halting operations to commemorate the Chinese Communist Party’s

100th anniversary celebration later this week, in a move that may exacerbate an already tight coal market and boost prices.

In Shanxi, the country’s biggest coal producing province, 128 of the fossil fuel mines accounting for nearly a quarter of the region’s capacity have suspended operation, according to industry website coal.in-en.com. In Hubei, all of the province’s 17 coal mines are halted until July 5, according to local government.

“Coal supplies have significantly tightened with anniversary celebrations approaching, a spate of recent accidents and production halts across key producing regions,” said Dongxing Futures Co. analyst Qi Chunyi, who forecast prices may advance further.

Coal futures in China have surged to record levels as safety inspections and restrictions on imports from Australia crimp supply, and as robust economic activity fuels demand. While the government has implemented measures to cool markets, prices remain more than 40% higher than a year ago.

The celebrations may also slow transport networks as some areas ban trucks carrying coal from entering, according to Qi. Highly-polluting industrial activity such as steelmaking and coal mining are often paused during important events to ensure better air quality.

Thermal coal futures on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange have increased for five straight weeks and traded 0.6% higher to 784.8 yuan a ton at the midday break on Wednesday.

Gold production set for growth, says Fitch Solutions

LOBAL gold mine production will grow at the fastest rate in three years this year owing to

reduced disruption from Covid-19, Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research says. The company’s ‘Outlook for Global Gold Mining’ report states that, over the medium term, global mine production growth will remain strong, as high prices by historical standards encourage investment and output growth.

Fitch Solutions forecasts global gold production will increase from 109.4-million ounces this year to 141.7-million ounces by 2030, averaging 3.2% a year growth.

This will be an acceleration from the average growth of just 0.8% over the period from 2016 to 2020.

Daily News Update Page 23 After having surged during the previous ten years, China’s gold production will stagnate over the coming decade, says Fitch Solutions, noting that declining ore grades will limit domestic investment and encourage Chinese firms to increasingly develop overseas projects.

It forecasts that gold production in China will grow by 0.2% this year, and then remain roughly stagnant over the remainder of the decade.

In Australia, Fitch Solutions says, the gold sector will see modest production growth over the coming years, supported by a strong project pipeline, rising gold prices and competitive operating costs.

It expects the country’s production to increase from 10.8-million ounces this year to 13.1-million ounces in 2030, averaging 2.2% yearly growth.

Fitch Solutions expects Russia’s gold production growth to have accelerated in 2020 and that that will continue into this year, as domestic demand for the precious metal is buoyed by the possibility of further Western sanctions on State banks, which are likely to respond by increasing their reserves of gold.

In the longer term, it expects gold production to be supported by a healthy project pipeline. Fitch Solutions forecasts the country’s gold output to grow from 9.9-million ounces this year to 14-million ounces in 2030, representing an average yearly growth of 3.8% during this decade.

In the US, Fitch Solutions forecasts gold production to grow by 1.5% this year.

First gold runs smoothly for Capricorn at Karlawinda

APRICORN Metals has poured first gold at its Karlawinda project in Western Australia as

the company continues to optimise its processes.

The first gold bars weighed 12 kilograms (386 ounces) and were the first of a 12-year mine life at over 110,000 ounces per annum for Karlawinda.

Capricorn executive chairman Mark Clark said the first pour was a great reward for years of hard work at the gold project.

“First gold production at Karlawinda is a great credit to Capricorn’s construction and operations teams, who with our key contractors, have worked tirelessly to deliver this product,” Clark said.

“We will now focus our efforts on ramping up the project to full operations as efficiently as possible.”

The ramp up processes involve the crushing circuit, processing and plant services areas. Ball mill optimisation continued as the crushing circuit ran in excess of 1000 tonnes per hour at 70 per cent availability, for parts of the six-day start-up of operations.

Daily News Update Page 24 Karlawinda’s 7.5-megawatt ball mill operated at around 91 per cent availability of the same period, as testing, inspections and alignments were completed in June.

Clark said in June that profitability was next on Capricorn’s agenda as it continued to ramp up.

“It is the culmination of a huge effort from our construction team and key contractors,” he said.

“We now look forward to transitioning to full steady state operations and turning the project in to a profitable, long-life business.”

In August last year, Capricorn awarded mining contractor MACA a five-year contract for open pit mining services at Karlawinda.

The open pit services include drill and blast, and load and haul activities, with around 11 million bank cubic metres of ore and waste to be moved a year using a fleet of 180-tonne dump trucks.

Colombia first-quarter coal output down 28% on year, gold

production up 23%

OLOMBIA’s coal production fell 28% in the first quarter of 2021 versus the year-earlier

period, the national mining agency (ANM) said on Wednesday, due to changing coal prices and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the three months to March 31 Colombia produced 13.9 million tonnes, down from 19.4 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2020.

However, compared with the fourth quarter of 2020, Colombia’s coal sector showed signs of recovery, with output up 52% from 9 million tonnes produced in the three months ended Dec. 31, the ANM said in a statement.

“The recovery of coal, Colombia’s main income-generating mineral for the sector, is due to reactivation of production in the north of the country,” ANM President Juan Miguel Duran said in the statement.

The production figures come just two days after Anglo-Swiss mining giant Glencore Plc said it will buy out its partners Anglo American Plc and BHP at Colombia’s Cerrejon coal mine.

Gold production in the first quarter of the year rose close to 23% to 11.7 tonnes, from 9.53 tonnes in the first quarter of 2020. Compared with the final quarter of last year, first-quarter gold production dropped 16% from 13.9 tonnes.

Nickel output fell sharply on year in the first quarter, declining 32% from 22.7 million pounds in the first quarter of 2020 to 15.4 million pounds in the three months ended March 31.
