THE USE OF GOOGLE TRANSLATE AS A LEARNING MEDIA FOR

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION SKILL

A Quasi-Experimental Study in One of Vocational School in KabupatenBandung

This study was aimed to investigate whether or not Google Translate helps students to improve their translation skill and conducted in one vocational school in Kabupaten Bandung, West Java. This study used a quasi-experimental study research design which employed

sequential explanatory mixed-method – quantitative followed by

qualitative. Pre-test and post-test were used in quantitative stage; whereas, questionnaire was used in qualitative stage. The quantitative data were analyzed through paired sample t-test to analyze pre-test and post-test of experiment group, and independent sample t-test was used to analyze the post-test score of both experimental group and control group; whereas, the qualitative data were analyzed through codification and categorization. The study revealed two findings related to two research questions. First, the result of quantitative manual and SPSS calculation by using paired sample ttest resulted -3.847 score, and the independent sample t-test resulted 4.341 score. Both scores rejected the null hypothesis, and accepted the alternative hypothesis saying that there was significant difference between experiment and control group, therefore the use of Google Translate helps improving the students’ translation skill. However, it could not

be rejected that the teacher’s feedback and the use of TBL method

during treatments had an implication to the students’ improvement on

their translation skill. Second, the qualitative data revealed that 85% students had a good experience toward the use of Google Translate. However the percentage showed that the students’ response to GT was positive, as the use of ICT in language learning helped the students to engage more to learning activity and motivate them to involve; moreover, as Brown (2001: 145) said that one of the advantages of using ICT product in learning is the fun factor.
