ANNOUNCEMENT

Introduction of Stefan Schouten for the

Pieter Schenck Award

The 1999 Schenck Award Committee was composed of Robert Alexander, John Hayes, Jan de Leeuw, Gerard W.M. Lijmbach and Joan O. Grimalt (chairman). Six candidates were proposed for the award. The committee members unanimously agreed that all of them had made signi®cant scienti®c contributions to organic geochemistry to qualify for the Award. However, only one could be selected. After some deliberations in which two candidates ranked very high, by a wide consensus the Committee took the decision to nominate Stefan Schouten.

Stefan has made signi®cant contributions to the understanding of the geochemical information contained in the

d 13C composition of biomakers. He is very skilled in the use of irm-GC±MS instruments and he is also an expert

scientist in the interpretation of stable isotape data. To date, he has published 47 papers in high-rank international journals, including Science (2), Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (16) and Organic Geochemistry (17). All the Committee members would like to express their warmest congratulations to Stefan and their best wishes for a bright scienti®c career.
