Mutia Karina. K2209098. 2016. Enhancing Students’ Motivation In Learning English By Optimizing The Use Of Animation Movie (An Action Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Karanganyar in the Academic Year of 2014/2015). Thesis. First Consultant: Dra. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, M. Ed, Ph. D., second consultant: Drs. Muh. Asrori, M.Pd. English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta.
The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe whether animation movie can improve the students’ motivation in the learning English or not; (2) To describe the difficulties when implementing animation movie in this research.
The action research study was conducted in two cycles from February to May 2015. There are 3 meetings in the first cycle and 2 meetings in the second cycle. Every cycle consisted of four steps: planning, implementing, observation, and reflection. The research data were collected by using qualitative techniques (observation, interview, diary and document analysis) and quantitative techniques (pre-test and post-test). The data were analyzed through descriptive analysis for the qualitative data and descriptive statistics for the quantitative data.
The research findings showed that: (1) the implementation of animation movie could improve students’ motivation in the learning English. The students’ motivation had improved along with the changes of classroom situation which became more interesting and motivating. The improvement of the students’ achievement was proved by the mean score of their post-test that was higher than the base score. The mean score of writing test increased from 64.56 in the pre-test, 76.55 in test 1 and in the post-test became 80.26. (2) the difficulties when implementing animation movie in this research, included: a) sometimes the LCD screen could not be connected to the laptop well; b) most of students could not catch up with the speed of the speaker; c) students concentrated more on the animation movie but they forgot with the assignment; and d) the number of sound systems available in the school was limited.
From the results above, it could be concluded that animation movie is an alternative teaching media that benefits both for students’ achievement and for the classroom situation. It is recommended that the teacher can implement animation movie to overcome the students’ motivation problems.
vi ABSTRAK
Mutia Karina. K2209098. 2016. Enhancing Students’ Motivation In Learning English By Optimizing The Use Of Animation Movie (An Action Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Karanganyar in the Academic Year of 2014/2015). Skripsi. Pembimbing 1: Dra. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, M. Ed, Ph. D., Pembimbing 2: Drs. Muh.
