On the Delta set of a singular arithmetical

congruence monoid

R´esum´e. Si a et b sont des entiers positifs, avec a ≤b et a2 _≡

amodb, l’ensemble

Ma,b={x∈N:x≡a modb oux= 1}

est un mono¨ıde multiplicatif, appel´e mono¨ıde de congruence arith-m´etique (ACM). Pour chaque mono¨ıde avec ses unit´esM×et pour chaque x ∈ M\M×, nous dirons que t ∈ N _{est une longueur}

de d´ecomposition en facteurs dex si et seulement s’il existe des ´el´ements irr´eductibles y1, . . . , yt ∈M tels que x=y1· · ·yt. Soit

un ACM avec pgcd(a, b) > 1. Cet ensemble est compl`etement caract´eris´e quand pgcd(a, b) =pα,pun nombre premier etα >0. Quand pgcd(a, b) a plus d’un facteur premier, nous donnons des bornes pour ∆(M).

is a multiplicative monoid known as an arithmetical congruence monoid (or ACM). For any monoidM with unitsM×and anyx∈

M\M×_{we say thatt∈Nis afactorization lengthofxif and only} if there exist irreducible elementsy1, . . . , ytofM andx=y1· · ·yt. LetL(x) ={t1, . . . , tj} be the set of all such lengths (where ti <

ti+1 whenever i < j). The Delta-set of the element xis defined as the set of gaps in L(x): ∆(x) = {ti+1−ti : 1≤ i < k} and the Delta-set of the monoidM is given by S_x∈M\M×∆(x). We

consider the ∆(M) whenM =Ma,bis an ACM with gcd(a, b)>1.

This set is fully characterized when gcd(a, b) =pα_{forpprime and}

α >0. Bounds on ∆(Ma,b) are given when gcd(a, b) has two or more distinct prime factors.
