This thesis‟ objectives are to describe Don Vito Corleone‟s morality: services others, settles his jealousy toothers. Then, this study uses psychoanalysis and moral criticism. Finally, the researcher finds out that Don Vito Corleone services others and calms his jealousyto others, which shows that the triumph moral of the main character is true.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of Study
Literature and psychology have connection. On the one hand, literature contains characters that behave psychologically. On the other hand, psychology influences the author of novel to put his idea in literature and creates the characters. Even though literature and psychology are different in their field, but those have same thing that can be seen as the object. In literature, author puts the character in his story as the reflection of human being that has personality. In addition, psychology gives some understanding about the way of human being think and act like the one do in the real life. Moreover, those have functional connection because learning about psychic of others in real indication or imaginatively (Endraswara 97).
Delbanco and Cheuse argue that actually, psychology in the real world reads human as the patients of mental disorder by listening to them discuss their dreams, their erotic urges, and their childhood. However, psychology in literature attempts to explain the motivations and the meanings behind character‟s action. Of course,
psychology can reveal the motivation and reason of the author to create the stories and characters (9).

readers and they have different interpretation to solve those codes. Readers can imagine the interpretation and later they reflect to their characteristic. Every
imagination of human being is different. It is based on what they ever felt before. In addition, interpretation of psychology may wake their imagination that valuable in their life (Minederop 81).
The psychology applied to literature learns about how the character in literary work thinks response of the readers after they read the literary works, and tries to reveal the process of the author when he writes it. However, psychology approach in literature emphasizes to the character and characterization in literary works.
Psychology approach emphasizes to the completely literary work, whether in neither intrinsic nor extrinsic, but it is more emphasizing on the character or characterization; that appears on literary works (Minderop 79).

Psychology helps literature to resolve the psychological problems in literary works. Psychology may open the psychology problems that appear especially in character. The character‟s psychological problems, often called disorders or
dysfunction, will influence the behavior that gives much control over the character itself (Tyson 12).
Thus, as explained above about the connection between literature and psychology, for Endaswara, psychology and literature connected functionally, for Delbanco and Cheuse, character is patient of psychology, for Minderop, psychology interprets literary work in psychological aspect, and for Tyson, psychology problems that appear in literature can influence character‟s characterization. Therefore,
literature and psychology are has same objects. Those try to reveal the author, the characters, or the readers that have read literary works. Reveal the problem of psychology in literature, the characters often to be the object. Because a character is the representation of human being in the real world, psychology tries to reveal mental activity in human. Moreover, all of the opinions above confirm that literature and psychology has connection.
One of the novels that have psychological problems is Mario Puzo‟s The Godfather. The novel tells about the godfather named Don Vito Corleone who

never thinks to be an arrogant person, even though he has the great power to do that. When his elder son, Sonny Corleone, die because of the enemy‟s attack, he will not take any revenge. In fact, he offers the peace to the one who is responsible for his elder son‟s death. Hence, all of his family and enemies love and give respect to him,
even though in the last story it will be paid by his successor, Michel Corleone.
As a friendly man, Don Vito Corleone never refuses the one who needs his help except the appeal of Sollozo who asks for protection to sell drugs in New York. Don refuses it because he thinks that drugs bring the trouble in the future and the police and congressional representatives that support him will forbid it. Don Vito
Corleone‟s thought of drugs is very reasonable. However, if the selling drug makes
Sollozzo happy, Don Vito will let him, though without Don Vito protection.
In addition, as the head of criminal in New York, Don Vito Corleone has a great job to do. Even though, he never forgets to spend time with his family. He has principle that a man who never spends time with his family can never be a real man. Of course, he teaches his principle to his sons and godchildren. Moreover, he always makes his children happy.
Don Vito Corleone wants to feel the pain from others and tries to fix it, as he does to his old friend, Nazorine. When Nazorine requests some helps to Don, because of his daughter‟s love, an Italian immigrant, will send to the World War II by

has to arrange a new ordinance to protect Italian immigrant and of course, the cost is too expensive.
The crime of Don Vito appears when he kills the one who disturbs. For example, if the one who gets the offers from Don does not want to take it, of course, Don Vito arranges the plan to kill that one just only get what he wants. For certain reason, kill someone is permitted for Don Vito.
Therefore, by those ironic points of Don Vito Corleone‟s moral as the head of crime syndicate that depicts on above, this study starts. This study starts to reveal the psychology of Don Vito Corleone, that is, interesting personality of him especially in his moral that contains sense of morality, perfection, advice and his reasonable. Because of this study has opinion that the moral of Don Vito Corleone influences the story in The Godfather.

B. Statement of Problem
Based on the background of study, the statement of problems is formulated as follows;
1. How does Don Vito Corleone service others?
2. How does Don Vito Corleone calm his jealousy to others?
C. Objective of the Study
Based on statement of the problems above, this study tries to find out something deal with objective study, like:
1. To describe Don Vito Corleone services others.
2. To describe Don Vito Corleone calm his jealousy to others.
D. Scope and limitation
This study takes more discussion about moral. Therefore, to keep the discussion proper to the objective study, there is scope and limitation in this study. The scope of this study is the main character of the novel, Don Vito Corleone. Moreover, the limitation of this study is about the side of moral on Don Vito

E. Significance of the Study
The study hopes that readers of this thesis can read the psychological aspects that influences in human‟s character in the novel. Through this study, the writer can
give more understanding about Mario Puzo‟s works, especially The Godfather, hopefully. On the other hand, this study also hopes can give some information and
understanding about Mario Puzo‟s other works especially in crime syndicate story.
The writer of this study also hopes can give contribution to literary study, especially in English Department.
F. Method of research
The research applies descriptive analytic method to answer the problems of this study is more accurate. Hence, this study uses some books including the novel itself as the primary resource, articles journals, and online resources. Moreover, the research follows the following steps:
1. Read the novel to get complete and well understanding of the whole story.
2. Find the data in novel to find the word that is related.

4. Analyze the data collected by firstly categorizing them into two points, dealing with the statement of problems. Then, each point is analyzed using psychoanalysis, which refers to the objectives of the study.
5. Make conclusion based on the result of the data analysis.
G. Definition of key terms
1. Godfather : A man who sponsors a person at baptism. Or the leader of an organized crime syndicate (Webster‟s encyclopedic 788).
2. Moral : of or concerned with the judgment of the goodness or badness of human action and character (American Heritage 1142).

CHAPTER II
LITERARY REVIEW
A. Theoretical Framework
As explained in the background of study that literature and psychology are closely related, therefore this study will draw the theory of psychology to analyze the main character that has psychological problems.
1. Psychoanalysis
The popular psychology theory that often appears in literature is
psychoanalysis. According to Encyclopedia Americana, psychoanalysis is a theory of personality and human development and the Austrian physician Sigmund Freud found it (720). Actually, the goal of psychoanalysis tries to resolve the psychological problem in human. In addition, it investigates the unconscious forces governing human behavior. Human behavior is under control by unconscious. What human always do is because the unconscious mind that control awareness. Hence, the central concept of psychoanalytic thinking is the existence of unconscious.

existing, or memories. Preconscious material is that of which person is not aware at the moment, but which may be easily recalled.
Moreover, unconscious material is that which cannot be brought to conscious awareness easily and voluntarily. It consists of two general kinds of material: the first is basic or innate, drives that work to preserve the life of the individual and species; and the second is memories wishes, and other mental process that once were
conscious, but that have been repressed because they are painful to the conscious mind (615).
Freud adds that there are three basic units in the personality of human and those are interrelated;
a. Id is the primitive, or childlike, part of the personality that operates at the unconscious level. The id is the source of two opposing drives: the first is erotic or constructive, impulse; and the second is aggressive, or destructive, impulse. Together these drives, when balanced by the other parts of the personality, preserve the life of the individual and the continuation of the species.

c. Superego is the personality system that acts as a censor of the impulse of id and ego. It operates on both the conscious and unconscious level of awareness. The conscious actives of the superego are commonly called conscience.
Nevertheless, Tyson argues that the superego will be the opposition of the id because it contains of the cultural taboos while id devoted to the gratification of prohibited of desire. In addition, ego that operates in conscious level, change to be the referee between id and superego. Hence, the relation of id, ego and superego is the representation of the culture of human (25).
In other hand, Freud that cited in Musthaq said that the superego applies the strictest moral standard to the helpless ego which is at its mercy; in general it
represents the claims of morality, and we realize all at once that our moral sense of guilt is the expression of the tension between the ego and the superego (9). Which means that superego contains of morality and the causal of someone has moral sense is because of the expression of the tension between the ego and the superego. Hence, this study choses the theory of id, ego and superego.
2. Moral Criticism

English poet Percy Shelley that cited in Tim Gillespie argues that a man, to be greatly good, must imagine intensively and comprehensively; he must put himself in the place of another and of others; the pains and pleasures of his species must become his own (92). Thus, a man who has morality or good moral have to put him for others, presents his pleasure and take the pain. The man who has morality always gives his presence to service others. In addition, the man who has morality always calm his jealousy to make pleasures for other. Moreover, argument of Shelley may be a standardization of morality.
In other hand, the moral of someone may be transform from good to bad or as just the opposite. Freud that cited in Fana dewi thesis argues that human being who lives in the middle of the problem might experience the moral transform (2). It is because someone who lives in the middle of problem can change the point of view. Someone may see something is different when he gets some problems.

B. Review of related studies
To sharpen the reason of the study, it needs some other points of view from already existed journal, papers, or thesis. With the method of comparing with the previous analysis, this thesis will bring the new concept from the previous thesis or journal.
The first relevant study was from Fana Dewi who takes Michael Corleone as the object of her study. The title she writes in her thesis of literature is A Study If
Michael Corleon’s Moral Depravity as seen in Mario Puzo’z The Godfather. The thesis tells about moral depravity of Michael. She tries to prove that attacking and some threats to his father changes him to be a murder. In addition, she tries to search some effects of the Michel‟s moral depravity. In order to find the object of the study, she puts psychoanalysis as the theory of her thesis.
In other hand, the journal that applies psychology as the main theory is came from Musthaq in Journal of Language and Literature. The Triumph of Id Over Ego and Superego in to His Coy Mistress tells about the id becomes the triumphant in
Andrew Marvell‟s To His Coy Mistress. He tries to prove that id of the character

CHAPTER III
ANALYSIS
This chapter is divided into two parts. Firstly, the study tries to describe Don Vito Corleone taking the pain from others. Then, the study describes Don Vito Corleone accepting the happiness from others. Moreover, this study is analyzed through the theories that mentioned previously.
A. Don Vito Corleone services others
This part describes the way of Don Vito Corleone to service others. The description is about Don Vito Corleone who cares to others and makes him services them such as saving the Italian immigrant, giving some money to his friends, giving the justice, giving advice to his godson, solving the problem with landlord, being the insurance for his ex-consigliore, saving the orphan, saving his son from the world war. Even he saves the nurse from the death. However, as the human being, Don Vito Corleone cannot meddle into the problem of husband and wife. Moreover, the
description puts theory of morality and psychology to reveal the evidence of the subject above.

Don Vito invites his friends, old friends, the neighbor, and some enemies. They come to wedding party with the pride of the noble, because of Don Vito as the head of crime syndicate facing them by himself.
Mario Puzo, the author of The Godfather, describes Don Vito Corleone as good Sicilian. Don Vito celebrates the wedding party of his daughter likes the tradition of Sicilian; never refuses what his friends request in wedding party of the daughter. Hence, Don accepts all of his friends who request some helps.
"Why do they bother your father with business on a day like this?" Kay asked. Michael laughed again. "Because they know that by tradition no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughter's wedding day. And no Sicilian ever lets a chance like that go by." (Puzo 11).
Don knows how to service his friends who need helps. Of course, as the godfather he can do anything with his power. In addition, Don Vito not only does what his friends ask for, but also Don Vito puts the problem of them in his heart and shows his empathy. The empathy of Don Vito can give a sign to the one who talks with him that Don Vito cares about the problem. Moreover, if Don Vito has care with the problem, of course, he will care about every problem of his friends.
Just like when his old friend, Nazorine, comes to the wedding party. Nazorine needs some helps to make the love of Nazorine‟s daughter, an Italian immigrant

peace. Don Vito of course can bring it into reality easily. Even Don tries to free the worried of Nazorine.
The Don walked Nazorine up and down the room, his hand on the baker's shoulder, his head nodding with understanding to keep up the man's courage. When the baker had finished, Don Corleone smiled at him and said, "My dear friend, put all your worries aside." He went on to explain very carefully what must be done. The Congressman of the district must be petitioned. The Congressman would propose a special bill that would allow Enzo to become a citizen (Puzo 8).
In this case, Don Vito not only takes the pain of Nazorine, but also he gives the problem solving. As usually, he shows his empathy to assure that the problem of Nazorine is his problem too. As the true godfather who gives some advices to his godson, Don Vito makes Nazorine releases his worried. Don Vito decides to make Enzo to be the citizen of America and it cannot make him deported back to Italy. Don Vito will arrange it with congressional representative perfectly and make the old friend Nazorine loses his worry about Enzo. Hence, the superego of Don that contains of conscience moves him to take the pain and to give the problem solving for his old friend, Nazorine.

As to giving some money to his friends, Don Vito shows his humility. After Don Vito gives some helps to Nazorine, the one named Anthony Cappola comes. Anthony needs some helps. He decides to open the pizzeria. Unfortunately, he does not have enough money to open it. He just needs five hundred dollars to open the pizzeria that he wants. Hence, he comes to Don Vito ask for money.
His name was Anthony Coppola and he was the son of a man Don Corleone had worked with in the railroad yards in his youth. Coppola needed five hundred dollars to open a pizzeria; for a deposit on fixtures and the special oven. For reasons not gone into, credit was not available. The Don reached into his pocket and took out a roll of bills. It was not quite enough. He grimaced and said to Tom Hagen, "Loan me a hundred dollars, I'll pay you back Monday when I go to the bank." The supplicant protested that four hundred dollars would be ample, but Don Corleone patted his shoulder, saying, apologetically, "This fancy wedding left me a little short of cash." He took the money Hagen extended to him and gave it to Anthony Coppola with his own roll of bills (Puzo 8).
To give five hundred dollars just for Anthony Cappola who wants to open the pizzeria is easy for Don Vito. However, at the same time, Don Vito shows his
humility to Anthony and his consigliore, Tom Hagen. Consciously, Don Vito loans a hundred dollars from his consigliore. It is because of his money in the pocket is not enough to give Anthony who needs five hundred dollars.

Don Vito still loans the money from Tom Hagen and gives all of the money to Anthony. He wants to be humble in front of both his friend and his consigliore.
As to giving the justice, Don Vito does his role in the best way. The old friend of Don Vito, Amerigo Bonasera, who never declares his friendship, comes to Don Vito Corleone for request some helps. He gets problem; his daughter has get mistreatment by two American guys. It makes her face is so bad and have to get treatment in the hospital for a view month. As the father, Amerigo Bonasera comes to the police station and brings that case to the court. However, Bonasera does not get the justice as he wants; to punish those guys equivalent. He disappoints with the result of the court. For him, the court in America and the police can bring the justice for him. Hence, he comes to Don Vito Corleone ask for justice.
As respected man, Don Vito Corleone only needs the declaration of friendship to him if someone needs his help. No matter how difficult the problems, Don Vito will never refuse it. However, as the old friend of Don Vito, Amerigo Bonasera never declares it. Bonasera never declares that Don Vito is his friend or his godfather. Nevertheless, Bonasera comes to Don Vito for request now.

Of course, the declaration of Bonasera makes a conscience that consists in the superego Don Vito personality moves to help his friend. The id in personality of Don Vito Corleone loses the power to influence Don Vito to be an arrogant. In addition, superego affects the decision of Don Vito. Moreover, Don Vito decides to help Bonasera but he does not want to kill those guys who mistreatment his daughter.
"But if you had come to me, my purse would have been yours. If you had come to me for justice those scum who ruined your daughter would be weeping bitter tears this day. If by some misfortune an honest man like yourself made enemies they would become my
enemies"--- the Don raised his arm, finger pointing at Bonasera--- "and then, believe me, they would fear you."
Bonasera bowed his head and murmured in a strangled voice, "Be my friend. I accept."
Don Corleone put his hand on the man's shoulder. "Good," he said, "you shall have your justice. Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do me a service in return. Until that day,
consider this justice a gift from my wife, your daughter's godmother." (Puzo 14)

As to giving the advice for his godson, Johnny Fontane, he can do his role well. In the wedding party of Connie, Johnny comes and faces his father with many problems. He says that there is problem in his voice and makes him cannot sing for a long time. In addition, the problem of his ex-wife affects his mental and life overall.
Don Vito Corleone is the real godfather especially for Johnny. Don knows that he needs some helps of his godfather. Honestly, Don Vito is angry to Johnny because of he left and divorces his ex-wife However, he cannot let Johnny fall into the trouble. As godfather, Don Vito gives an advice to godson, Don Vito tells that the source of problem of Johnny is because of divorcing his first wife to catch another girl.
Even though Don Vito disagrees with divorcing of Johnny, he still regards Johnny as his godson. He wants to be the one who wants to listen what Johnny says. He puts his self as the cure of the Johnny problem. Moreover, he tells that even though Johnny has left his ex-wife, but Johnny has to give the quality time for his child.

As to being the insurance for his ex- consigliore, don Vito does it well. Before Tom Hagen, Don Vito has great consigliore named Gonco Abbandando. However, Genco is sick and Tom Hagen takes his position. In the beginning of the story, Genco cannot come to the Connie wedding party is because of he is in the hospital. After the wedding party is done, Don Vito takes his sons and godson to see Genco in the hospital. Don Vito knows that Genco is in agony.
Don Vito comes in the hospital. However, the Doctor forbids him to face Genco because of the Genco condition. The Doctor thinks that it will be better if everyone let Genco dies in peace. Nevertheless, Don says something that can assure the Doctor;
"Then there is nothing more for you to do," said Don Corleone. "We will take up the burden. We will comfort him. We will close his eyes. We will bury him and weep at his funeral and afterwards we will watch over his wife and daughters." (Puzo 22)
For Don, Genco is the best consigliore that he ever has. A Sicilian who has the balls likes the real Sicilian. However, Genco will die. Don says those words to the Doctor is because of Don can keep his words. Of course, Don is ready to take the burden of Genco up. Don will comfort him and will close his eyes. Moreover, Don Vito will take the pain of Genco.

life anymore. Genco family will be prosperous even though the father dies. Because of Don Vito will take the pain of Genco family.
As to saving the orphan named Tom Hagen, Don Vito plays his role well. Tom Hagen takes the position of Genco Abbandando a year ago. It is because of the condition of Genco that cannot work maximally. Actually, Tom Hagen is an orphan who takes by Sonny Corleone to Corleone‟s house. He is sick, and because of Don
Vito empathize, Don brings him to the doctor. Don knows that Tom Hagen‟s life is unfortunate. Hence, Don Vito lets him to stay in Corleone‟s house and get the education like Corleone‟s sons.
In the most natural way, without a word being spoken or the matter discussed in any fashion, Don Corleone had permitted the boy to stay in his household. Don Corleone himself took the boy to a special doctor and had his eye infection cured. He sent him to college and law school. In all this the Don acted not as a father but rather as a guardian. There was no show of affection but oddly enough the Don treated Hagen more courteously than his own sons, did not impose a parental will upon him. It was the boy's decision to go to law school after college (Puzo 26).

Don Vito cares Tom Hagen. It depicts when Tom Hagen asks for the college and wants to be a lawyer. All of Don Vito does, because of he knows the past of unfortunate Tom Hagen. In this case, Don Vito tries to take the pain of Tom Hagen life and give him a better life. Moreover, Don Vito gives him respect.
Don Vito chooses Tom Hagen because he can play his role as Sicilian consigliore even though he is German-Irish. Don Vito alwasys asks his opinion for every problem. However, in the last story of The Godfather, Michel changes to be the successor of his father. He changes to be the next Don for the Corleones.
Besides the transition of Don Vito to Don Michel, Tom Hagen as the
consigliore has discharged. He lost his position in the Corleones. Of course it makes him disappointed. He tells that Michel is too weak because his strategy is nothing. The enemies of Corleones hit them, but Michel does not do anything. Hence, Tom Hagen is disappointed.
In this time, Don Vito, as the father of Michel and the one who is respected by Tom Hagen, gives some advice for Tom Hagen. He gives insurance to Tom Hagen that his youngest son, Michel Corleone, can run the Corleones. Tom Hagen only has to believe in Michel and Don Vito and everything will be all right.

Don Vito shows how powerful his sounds. The advice of Don Vito can bring both freed the worry of Hagen and assured the position of Michel as the new Don for The Corleones. Tom Hagen just needs insurance from the one who is respected by him. In addition, Don Vito has to strengthen the position of Michel who is just to be the next Don for The Corleones.
As to saving his son, Michel Corleone, from the world war, Don Vito does his role in the good way. The youngest son of Don Vito Corleone, Michel Corleone, is different from two older son of Don. In the beginning of story, Michel is the war hero of the World War who does not want to involve into the business of the family. He knows the activity inside. Therefore, he wants not to get involved.

When Michael Corleone was discharged early in 1945 to recover from a disabling wound, he had no idea that his father had arranged his release. He stayed home for a few weeks, then, without consulting anyone, entered Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and so he left his father's house. To return for the wedding of his sister and to show his own future wife to them, the washed-out rag of an
American girl (Puzo 5).
Don Vito thinks that the bad wound of Michel has to be the last wound for Michel. He cannot forgive his self if Michel, the last son of Don Vito, kills by war. For Don Vito, the wound is the pain that has to take. Therefore, the reason of discharging of Michel from army is Don Vito cannot let his son gets the pain anymore.
As to solving the problem with landlord, Don Vito plays his role in the best way. Don Vito taking the pain of others firstly happens when he was a young. In that time, the young Vito just to be a respected man because of he can clean off Fanucci „the black hand‟.

Don Vito knows the reason of Mrs. Colombo for the dog. The dog is the entertainer and friend for the widow such as Mrs. Colombo. In other hand, Mrs. Colombo does not want to move because of her old friend be in the apartment. It will be the pain if Mrs. Colombo takes the landlord rules. Therefore, Don Vito decides to talk with the landlord.
"Signor Roberto?" Vito said in a surprised voice. "Of course he will. He's a good-hearted fellow. Once I explain how things are with you he'll take pity on your misfortunes. Now don't let it trouble you any more. Don't get so upset. Guard your health, for the sake of your children." (Puzo 119)
The young Vito is the kind man even though he is just to be the respected man. He helps Mrs. Colombo the widow is just because of his conscience that appears in his superego drives his personality to be a kind. In addition, he does not think badly to the landlord, Mr. Roberto who forbids Mrs. Colombo bring the dog in the apartment. To solve the problem he decides to talk reason with the landlord. Moreover, the problem is solving. Mr. Roberto lets Mrs. Colombo to stay in his apartment with her dog, of course.

Police under arrest Luca Brasi. However, Filomena is still afraid with luca brasi. She tells the story to Don Vito Corleone. As a kind man, Don Vito calms Filomena and tells that she never be worried. Don Vito will care everything about Luca Brasi and assure Filomena.
Though Don Corleone assured Filomena that she had nothing to fear from either Luca Brasi or the police, she had no peace. Her nerves were shattered and she could no longer work at her profession. Finally she persuaded her husband to sell the grocery store and they returned to Italy. Her husband was a good man, had been told everything and understood. But he was a weak man and in Italy squandered the fortune they had both slaved in America to earn. And so after he died she had become a servant. So Filomena ended her story. She had another glass of wine and said to Michael, "I bless the name of your father. He always sent me money when I asked, he saved me from Brasi. Tell him I say a prayer for his soul every night and that he shouldn't fear dying." (Puzo 197)

As the one who has great power, Don Vito uses his power wisely. He uses his power not for mistreatment someone. However, he uses it to help the one who needs him. He arranges the best problem solving for the supplicants just for makes them do not worry anymore. He is not only taking the pain of others, but also transforms to be the cure for others. Even Don Vito takes the pain of his enemy, Tattaglia.
As to releasing the worry of his enemy, Don Vito does it sincerely. The Tattaglias, who supports Sollozzo to sell drugs in New York City, has lost the youngest son, Bruno Tattaglia. The Tattaglias response it, and kill the elder son of The Corleones, Sonny Corleone. Moreover, that situation makes the war in New York City.
However, as the head of the Corleones, Don Vito does not want to get is war even though his eldest son has killed by the enemy. He prefers to make the peace. Hence, he calls all of the families in New York City, to achieve the peace.
The Tattaglias is still afraid, though Don Vito declares the peace. The Tattaglias is afraid because of Don Vito may do the vendetta. Don Vito may take a revenge and kill all of the Tattaglias when the peace run. However, Don Vito assures to Tattaglias that it will never happen.

and I must bear it, not make the innocent world around me suffer with me. And so I say, I give my honor, that I will never seek vengeance, I will never seek knowledge of the deeds that have been done in the past. I will leave here with a pure heart (Puzo 164).
Don Vito assures that he will never take revenge. He will never revenge the tattaglias who is the cause of sonny corleone‟s death. Don Vito just let it be
happened. In addition, he will never seek knowledge of the truth of Sonny Corleone‟s
death. Moreover, it makes the Tattaglias lose the worry about vendetta.
It indicates the power of Don Vito is big. In addition, the power of him can make the enemies are afraid. However, Don Vito uses his power wisely. He does not want to be an arrogant. Even Don Vito brings the peace by his power.
The power of Don Vito Corleone is not always can taking the pain of others. It happens to the daughter of Don Vito who needs some helps from his father. Unfortunately, Don Vito cannot do more to help his daughter because of his belief; never get involved in the problem of others family.

She had found her parents coolly unsympathetic and curiously amused. Her mother had had a little sympathy and had even asked her father to speak to Carlo Rizzi. Her father had refused. "She is my daughter," he had said, "but now she belongs to her husband. He knows his duties. Even the King of Italy didn't dare to meddle with the relationship of husband and wife. Go home and learn how to behave so that he will not beat you." Connie had said angrily to her father, "Did you ever hit your wife?" She was his favorite and could speak to him so
impudently. He had answered, "She never gave me reason to beat her." And her mother had nodded and smiled (Puzo 136).
Don Vito believes that even the king of Italy cannot involve to the problem of husband and wife. For Don Vito, it is too personal. The field of relationship between husband and wife is special. In addition, if Connie wants to get out of the
mistreatment problem, she has to help by herself. Nevertheless, Don Vito still monitors what the son-in-law does for his daughter.
Even though Don Vito has great power to take the pain and be the cure for others, Don Vito bounds his self not involve in the relationship between husband and wife. He realizes that a couple who had marriage have a leader; the husband. Hence, Don Vito never meddles to the problem of husband and wife.

B. Don Vito Corleone settles his jealousy from others
This part describes the way of Don Vito Corleone calms his jealousy to
others. The description is about Don Vito Corleone who accepts the others‟ happiness such as greeting the murderer in his daughter‟s wedding party, accepting the gift from senator, letting Sollozzo sells the drugs if it makes him happy, giving the Johnny winning in the Oscar nomination and accepting the happiness of the enemies. Therefore, this study applies the theory of morality and psychology.
As to greeting the murderer, Don Vito accepts the happiness so well. In that time, Luca Brasi gets invitation of Don‟s Daughter wedding party. He feels proud of it. Hence, he asks for to face the Don Vito by himself. He just want to show how proud him when he gets invitation and can come in the wedding party of Don Vito‟s
daughter. In the meeting room, Don Vito greets Luca Brasi such a king greets the hero of battlefield. Don Vito knows that Luca is very happy of that invitation and of course, happiness of Luca will be the happiness of Don too.

The authors of The Godfather, Mario Puzo, describes Luca Brasi as the terror of human that kill anyone brutality. The Killing Machine. He does not to death or police. However, he obeys to Don Vito Corleone. It is because of Don Vito puts the respect to Luca Brasi. In addition, when Luca gives the present for the wedding party of Don, Don takes it proudly. In this case, don does not take the gratification such as id needs it. Don Vito takes the present of Luca, is because of the superego of don that accept the happiness of the murderer, Luca Brasi. Hence, Superego of Don Vito Corleone represents the morality.
As to accepting the gift from senator, Don Vito shows his humility well. Senator of America wants to come in to the wedding party of Don Vito daughter. However, Don Vito forbids him because of FBI may track him. In addition, it is true that FBI is coming into the wedding party and makes a note for everyone who comes in there. Fortunately, senator obeys to Don Vito forbid.
Therefore, senator sends the gift for Don Vito. The special gift that is not only expensive, but also antique. Need for a long time to get the gift likes it. Hence, both Tom Hagen and Don Vito love the gift from senator.

Don Corleone did not hide his pleasure that so great a man as the Senator had shown him such respect. The Senator, like Luca Brasi, was one of the great stones in the Don's power structure, and he too, with this gift, had reworded his loyalty.
Don Vito cannot hide his happiness. The happiness comes from the antique gift of senator. In addition, Don vito knows that senator is still loyal with him by sends the gift. Even though senator cannot come, his happiness is accepting by Don Vito happily.
Actually, Don Vito never refuses what the supplicant request. Anyone can belief him as a man who can take the words. If a man needs some helps, come to Don and declares his friendship, Don will service and give what he wants. However, Don refuses what Sollozzo request.
It happens because of Don cannot take what Sollozzo offers, to give
protection for Sollozzo‟s employers to sell drugs in New York City. Don Vito cannot
take it because he thinks that give the protection to sell drugs can bring trouble to his family that in peace. Don Vito has influence in congressional representative and support by the police. Moreover, the influence and support by police is the thing that Sollozzo needs.

him to sell drugs though without the protection of Don Vito. In addition, selling drugs, for Don, is not bothering the business of Don.
". . . .The affair involved drugs, in which I have no interest. I'm a quiet man and such endeavors are too lively for my taste. I explained this to Sollozzo, with all respect for him and the Tattaglia Family. I gave him my 'no' with all courtesy. I told him his business would not interfere with mine, that I had no objection to his earning his living in this fashion. He took it ill and brought misfortune down on all our heads. Well, that's life. Everyone here could tell his own tale of sorrow. That's not to my purpose." (Puzo 162)
The refusal of Don Vito makes Sollozzo hates him. However, Don Vito does not want to take the business is because he loves his family. Nevertheless, Don Vito does not forbid Sollozzo to sell it in New York City if it can make Sollozzo happy. Sollozzo realizes that only Don Vito who can give the protection of selling drugs. Basically, it is the happiness that can give by Don to Sollozzo.
In other hand, Don Vito gives the happiness to his godson, Johnny Fontane. In that time, Johnny will be nominator of Oscar Nomination. However, Johnny cannot win it because of his director, Jack Woltz, can arrange the failure of him. Jack Woltz hates Johnny so much. Because of Johnny takes his beautiful talent, Margot Ashton. Hence, Don Vito sends Tom Hagen to arrange the winning of Johnny in Oscar Nomination.

be something bigger than just to be the winner of Oscar nomination. Don wants Johnny to be the big producer.
"Things aren't so bad," he told Johnny. "The Don says he can cancel out everything Woltz does against you. That you will almost certainly win the Award. But he feels that won't solve your problem. He wants to know if you have the brains and balls to become a producer on your own, make your own movies from top to bottom." (Puzo 96)
As the head of crime syndicate, Don Vito can arrange everything that he wants. Even the Oscar nomination, or being the producer, is something simple to bring it into reality. In addition, Johnny Fontane is the godson and of course, as the godfather, Don Vito wants to make him happy.
If Don Vito thinks that someone gives something that can bring sadness to his family, of course Don Vito will refuse it. This case happens when Don Vito was young. The young Vito works in the Abbandando grocery store on Ninth Avenue in New York's Hell's Kitchen. However, because of Fanucci „the black hand‟, he is fired.
In addition, as the son of Abbandando, Genco feels guilty because he cannot prevent it. As the compensation, Genco will steal the food from his father grocery, to supply the young Vito‟s needs. Of course, young Vito refuse it.

Vito that he would not have to worry about food. That he, Genco, would steal food from the grocery to supply his friend's needs. This offer though was sternly refused by Vito as too shameful, a son stealing from his father (Puzo 111).
The desire of gratification that contains in id cannot affect young Vito to take something wrong. Superego that contains of conscience in the personality of Don Vito forbids it. Don Vito thinks that it is too shameful if a son stealing from his father. Hence, young Vito refuses it.
Peace is the best happiness. Everyone loves peace even the „crime families‟ in New York City. However, the condition goes bad after the eldest son of Don Vito Corleone died. The families take the position ready to war. They think that the Corleones can take a revenge of the death of his eldest son. However, the war is not happened.
The death of Don Vito eldest son happens because of Barzinies‟ attack. Don
Vito knows it. However, Don does not want to take revenge. He prefers to call all of the families in the New York City. Arrange the meeting and offer the peace for all of the Families. At last, the peace is achieved.

Don Vito offers the peace to all of the Families. In addition, the families accept it. Don Vito offers the peace even though he has to arrest his revenge. Even though, he has to receive the death of his eldest son. Don Vito accepts his enemies happiness even though that is hurt for him.
Don Vito thinks that the peace is has to be the projecting. Because of he has to take back Michel Corleone who is the next target of Barzinies. Therefore, Don Vito decides to offer the peace to the families.
The cost for the peace is expensive. Don Vito has to accept the rules for the peace; give protection drugs seller in New York City. As mentioned previously, Don Vito is the one who has support by congress representative and the police. Of course, by that powers can protect the drugs seller. However, congress representative and the police may forbid it.
Selling the drugs is the future business. Because there are a lot of money spins on there. The families want to run it and money can make them happy. However, Don Vito does not want to run it. Don Vito thinks that it is too danger for his family life.
In addition, Don Vito has to deal the peace with other families. Therefore, Don Vito has to protect the drugs seller in New York City to achieve the peace.

Don Vito accepting the happiness of others is true. Even though, the pleasure comes from his enemies that demand for selling the drugs. Nevertheless, Don Vito has to push his conscience. It is just because of Don Vito has to deal the peace with the families in New York City that hunt his youngest son, Michel Corleone.
Actually, Michel Corleone is sent to Sicily just for hide from Corleones enemies. He is sent to the Corleone village and hides in the Don Tommasino. In that village, Michel sees the girl named Apollonia who makes him fall in love. As the son of godfather who has respect, Michel proposes Appolonia and hopes can marriage with her.
Don Vito, who hears that news, actually disagrees about Michel plan. He thinks that it can reveal the hiding of Michel and enemies will find him immediately. As human being, Michel needs to fulfill his natural appetite. In addition, it has to be in respected way. Hence, Michel has to marriage with Apollonia. Hence, Don Vito by Don Tommasino lets Michel marriages with Apollonia.

It indicates that Don Vito accepts the happiness of his son, Michel Corleone, who wants to get married. Even though it is, too danger to celebrate the wedding party, Don Vito lets it happens. In addition, the wedding party of Michel has to be under control of Don Tommasino, who is the friend of Don Vito and the parent of bridegroom for Michel.
As the father of Michel, Don Vito of course wants to see his son happy. However, if the condition is bad, the father normally tries to make it batter. Hence, Don Vito hesitates to decide the marriage of Michel at the first time.
After the meeting of peace agreement, Don Vito talks with Don Molinari from the west coast. Don Molinari tells the good news that his son, Freddie Corleone, is happy in Las Vegas. He adds that Freddie is the womanizer and every woman tries to catch Don Vito‟s son. In addition, because of Freddie can run the hotel business by

Don Vito, who hears that good news, cannot hide his proud to Freddie. He accepts the good news of Don Molinari who is happy with that news. Hence, he thanks to Don Molinari. In addition, Don Vito promises that he will use his influence to send the result of important racing by telegram first without disturbance.

He let it be known that his influence would be exerted so that the important racing wires would always be available to his people no matter what changes occurred in the power structure in the years to come, an important guarantee since the struggle over this facility was a constant open wound complicated by the fact that the Chicago people had their heavy hand in it. But Don Corleone was not without influence even in that land of barbarians and so his promise was a gift of gold (Puzo 165-166).
As father who hears the achievement of his son, Don Vito is happy to hear that news. Hence, Don Molinaro who brings that news, gets thank from Don Vito and he will get the gift such as the telegram for the result of important racing, which is it uses to run the gambling.
Briefly, by those explanations above, Don Vito Corleone shows his morality in front of everyone who faces him. The morality of Don Vito Corleone who accepts the others‟ happiness and settles his jealousy such as greeting the murderer in his daughter‟s wedding party, accepting the gift from senator, letting Sollozzo sells the

CONCLUSION
Mario Puzo‟s The Godfather is the novel, which has two different ironic
points. In the one hand, this novel has brutality that appears in the homicide of the enemies. In other hand, this novel is containing with the morality that appears in the personality of the main character, Don Vito Corleone. However, this study chooses to dig the morality points deeply.
This study reveals the morality of the main characters, Don Vito Corleone in psychological point of view. In addition, moral criticism puts in this study to makes the results more accurate. As mentioned previously, that Don Vito Corleone, even though he is the head of criminal syndicate, has the morality. The evidences appear in the chapter three. Don Vito Corleone services others shows that Don Vito helps everyone who needs helps. The old friend Nazorine, who needs protection for his daughter‟s love, thanks to Don Vito help. In addition, the old friend Bonasera who

In addition, he arranges to take his youngest son, Michel Corleone, from the military that send to the world war and it may be killed his son.As human being, Don Vito Corleone has limitation. He cannot solve the problem between husband and wife, even though it is his daughter problem. Don Vito cannot meddle relationship between husband and wife. Moreover, by those explanations above, Don Vito services others is true.
