Key words: Reading comprehension, narrative text, summarization technique Corcerning with school-Based Curriculum (KTSP), teaching English in SMA is expected to achieve informational level because the students are prepared to continue their study in University and they have to able to receive knowledge by using language competence. Reading is one of the language skills which has important roles for the students in enriching their knowledge and adding more experience. However, many students get difficulties in reading comprehension. In teaching process, teacher has to choose appropriate technique with the student’s condition in order to that the aim of teaching learning process can be raised. Summarization is one of teaching technique that can be used in teaching reading to develop the students reading skill. The summarizing techniques obviously have effects on students’ reading comprehension especially in cases of finding the main ideas, committing plagiarism and committing distortion. In this research, the writer focuses on narrative text as the material.

The objective of this research is to test the significane of the difference between the Reading Comprehension of Narrative text of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Gebog in the academic year 2013/2014 taught before and after using Summarization Technique.

This research is an experimental research. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Gebog in academic year 2013/ 2014 consist of twenty eight students. Because only twenty eight students, all of them takes as the subject. The research instrument used by the researcher is test. The form of the test is multiple choices and consists of twenty five items.

Based on the analyzing the data, it was found that of the reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Gebog in academic year 2013/ 2014 after being taught by using summarization technique was categorized good. The mean is 80.71, and the standard deviation is 6.75. Meanwhile of the reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Gebog in academic year 2013/ 2014 before being taught by using summarization technique was categorized sufficient. The mean is 65.85 and standard deviation is 7.56. Moreover the calculation of t-observation (to) 9.01 was higher than t-table (tt) 2.06 in level of significance 5%. It means there is significance difference between the reading comprehension of the eleventh grade

students of SMA N 1 Gebog in academic year 2013/ 2014 before and after being taught by using summarization technique.

Based on the result above, the researcher suggests that the English teacher is expected can use summarization technique as an alternative technique to teach the students in reading comprehension.

Berdasarkan Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP), pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di SMA diharapkan mencapai level informasi karena para siswa disiapkan untuk melanjutkan pendidikan mereka di Universitas dan mereka harus dapat menerima pengetahuan dengan menngunakan kemampuan berbahasa. Membaca adalah salah satu kemampuan bahasa yang memiliki peran penting untuk memperkaya pengetahua mereka dan menambah pengalaman. Bagaimanapun, banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam pemahaman membaca. Di dalam proses pengajaran, guru harus memilih teknik yang sesuai dengan kondisi para siswa sehingga tujuan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran dapat tercapai. Teknik meringkas adalah salah satu teknik penajaran yang dapat digunakan dalam pengajaran membaca untuk mengembangkan kemampuan membaca para siswa. Teknik meringkas memiliki efek pada pemahaman bacaan siswa terutama dalam kasus untuk menemukan gagasan utama, melakukan plagiarisme dan melakukan distorsi. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan teks narratif sebagai materi.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca teks naratif para siswa kelas XI SMA N 1 Gebog tahun ajaran 2013/2014 sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan teknik meringkas.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian ekperiment. Populasi dari penelitian di kelas XI.IPA SMA N 1 Gebog 2013/ 2014 yang terdiri dari 28 siswa. Karena hanya 28 siswa, seluruh siswa di ambil untuk di jadikan subjek. Alat penelitian yang digunakan penuli sadalah test. Bentuk test berupa pilihan ganda yang terdiri dari 25 soal.

Berdasarkan data analisis, telah ditemukan bahwa pemahaman membaca teks naratif siswa kelas XI SMA N 1 Gebog tahun ajaran 2013/ 2014 setelah diajar menggunakan teknik meringkas dikategorikan Baik. Nilai rata-rata adalah 80,71 dan standar deviasi adalah 6,75. Sementara pemahaman membaca teks naratif kelas XI SMA N 1 Gebog tahun ajaran 2013/ 2014 sebelum diajar menggunakan teknik meringkas dikategorikan cukup. Nilai rata-rata adalah 65,85

dan standar deviasi adalah 7,56. Perhitungan t-observation (to) 9.01 lebih tinggi dari t-table (tt) 2,06 dengan tingkat signifikan 5%. Ini bermakna bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca teks naratif kelas XI SMA N 1 Gebog tahun ajaran 2013/ 2014 sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan tehnik meringkas.

Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, peneliti memberi saran agar guru bahasa inggris dapat menggunakan teknik meringkas sebagai teknik alternatif untuk mengajar pemahaman membaca para siswa.
