the posterior portionbetween
the astragalar condyleand
the enlarged tuberosity for the Achilles tendon is a littlemore compressed
transversely.The
astragalar condyle is similar but alittle less dorsally projecting.
The
sustentaculum is dorsoventrallymore
compressed, but anteroposteriorly broaderand
perhaps a little less extended medially.The
shortened anterior portion of the cal-caneum,
correlated with the relatively short neck of the astragalus, exhibits asomewhat
less obliqueand
less concave facet for the cuboid, although in its transverse direction it is nearly aligned with the anteriormargin
of the sustentaculum.The
dorsalmargin
of this surface is transversely shorterand more
curved, with a long lateralmargin
extendingdown
to amore
ventrally placed peronealtubercle.The
peroneal groove consequently is decidedlymore
ventral in position.The
slender Tetraclaenodon calcaneuni has a long anterior or distal portion, in keeping with the elongate neck of the astragalus, as well as a lengthy posterior portion.The
sustentaculum is slenderand
outstanding, about as inM
eniscotherium.The
articular facet for the cuboid, although obliqueand
concave, is rather less so thaninM
eniscotherium,and
it does notapproach
so near the sustentaculum posteromedially.Navicular.
— The M
eniscotherium navicular is proximodistally shortand
has a deeply concave proximal surface occupied entirelyby
thehead
of the astragalus.The rim
of the concavity is broadly curved dorsallyand
medially, but the lateralmargin
ismore
nearly straightand
rises to alow prominence
ventrolaterally.The
medial margin, however, rises to ahigher,more
acuteprocess ventrally,and
between
these there is a sharp notch inthe ventral border forpassage of the tendon of the posterior tibialis.The
lateral side of the distal surfaceshows
a flat facet for the externalcuneiform which
is dorso- ventrally elongateand
noticeably tapering ventrally.Medial
to this the facet for the middlecuneiform
is dorsoventrally shorterand
dis- tinctly convex.The more
ventromedial surface of this convexity articulates with the internal cuneiform,and
rises to theprominence
at the ventromedial angle of the proximal surface.
The
lateral sur- face of the navicularshows
a dorsoventrally elongateand
slightlyconvex
facet along itsmore
proximal portion for articulation v^ith the cuboid.On
the ventral surface of the navicular, lateral to the notch, is a smallknob
or process thatmay have
supporteda
part of the insertion for the tibialis posterior. It is located justabove
the posterior extremity of the facet for the externalcuneiform
butinMeniscotherium
evidentlydoes notmake
contactwiththatbone.A few
differenceswere
noted with respect to thePhenacodus
navicular, although thetwo
are rather similar.On
the proximal rim the ventrolateralprominence
ismore
significant than that of the ventromedial angle,and
projects laterally as well as proximally in Phenacodus.The more
obliquely facing facet for thecuboid is proxi- modistally deeperand
rides wellup on
the proximoventral promi- nence. Also, the ventral tubercle is larger,more median
in position,and
itsdistal surface carriesasmall facet,not seeninMeniscotherium, for articulation with the ventral extension of the external cuneiform.The
facet for themiddlecuneiform
appears relatively longerand
lessconvex.
Inthe Tetraclaenodonnavicular the ventral tubercle
and
the ventro- lateralprominence
of the proximal rim togetherform
a strongly developed, oblique,and
ventrolaterally projecting process. This results also in a dorsoventrally concave surface articulating with the cuboid.Cuboid.
— The Meniscotherium
cuboidviewed
dorsally inan
artic- ulated footappears relatively short proximodistally, withthe exposed area in theform
of a parallelogram or nearly rectangular,inasmuch
as the articular surface for thecalcaneum
extendsdistally welldown
the dorsal surface. Disarticulated, the calcaneal facet is seen to be dorsoventrallyvery
convex and
highly oblique in anearly transverse plane.Moreover,
the dorsaland
ventral surfaces are convergent in a proximolateral direction. Distally the ventral surfaceshows
apronounced
ventromedial flare, ventrally covering the deeply im- pressed peroneal groove.The
distal surface anterior to the elongate peroneal groove is nearly oval in shapeand
essentially concave both dorsoventrallyand
transversely.The
surface is principally for artic- ulation with the fourth metatarsal, although the lateral extremity of the transversely elongate oval flattens out or issomewhat
deflected proximally for articulation with the fifth metatarsal. Also, the ven-tral
margin
of the oval facet isrounded

are in contact orpartiallymerged.The Phenacodus
cuboid ismuch more
elongate,and
the proximal surfacethough convex and

less so than inMenisco-
therium.The
broad distal articular surfacealso provides a relatively larger area for the fifth metatarsal.The
ventral surface is broadlyexpanded and
ventrodistally flaring, extending welldown
over the peroneal groove but does not appear so triangular in outline as inM
eniscoiherium.On
the medial surface the large facet for the navic- ular isproximoventrally locatedand
about asdeep
as it is long.In Tetraclaenodon the cuboid is decidedly slender
and
elongate in dorsal view,and
the proximal extremity ismore
like that of Phenacodus.The
ventral surface althoughexpanded
over the per- oneal groove is relativelymuch narrower
transversely,and
the medial surface isnarrower
dorsoventrally. Also, the facet for the navicularis noticeablyconvex
dorsoventrally. Itis straight or slightly concaveinM
eniscotherium.Internal cuneiform.
— The
internalcuneiform
is flattened with itsmedial facingsurface relatively
broad and
long. Proximally this sur- face inM
eniscotheriumnarrows and
its proximodorsalmargin
isdeeply concave for articulation with the navicular.
Marginal
to this concavity the lateral surface exhibitsan
arcuate facet,convex
in itsmore
dorsal portion butconcave proximally, thatarticulates with the medial side of the middle cuneiform.The
distal extremity,which
extends wellbeyond
the middle cuneiform, has a dorsoventrally elon- gate concavity for articulation with the first metatarsal.There
does not appear to beany
definable facet for the second metatarsal in the materialathand.The Phenacodus
internalcuneiform
is similar appearing, but the ventralmargin
is thicker,and
the dorsoventrally elongate facet for the navicular is less concaveand
facesmore
nearly proximal. In consequence the relatively flattened facet for the middlecuneiform
has amore
dorsoventral orientation.Except
for its thicker ventralmargin
the Tetraclaenodon internalcuneiform more
nearly resembles that ofM
eniscotherium, notably in the deeply concave,proximo-
dorsallyplaced navicular facet.The
distal extremity is similar in allthreeforms.
Middle
cuneiform.— The
dorsoventrally elongate middle cunei-form
is the smallest element of theMeniscotherium
tarsus. Its limited dorsal surface hasconvex
proximaland
distalmargins
that lap slightly onto the dorsal surfaces of the navicularand
second metatarsal respectively.Both
the proximaland
distal surfaces of the element are dorsoventrally concave, that for the navicularmore
decidedly so.
The
surface for the second metatarsal is, moreover, transverselyconvex and
tapers ventrally.The
medialand
dorso- ventrallycompressed
lateral surfaces of the middlecuneiform
artic- ulate in an uneven, arcuate facet with the internalcuneiform and
in anarrow
dorsoventrally elongate facet with the external cuneiform respectively.Behind
theupturned
ventralmargin
of the navicular surface a small but distinctly rugose prominence,and
possibly the adjacenttipof the internal cuneiform,may
wellhave
received a part of thetibialisposterior,which
extendingthrough
the ventral notch of thenavicularwould have
been inserted as wellon
the ventral tubercle of that bone, asmentioned
in a foregoing section. This muscle, of course, functions with the peroneus longus in extending the tarsus,and
againstitinturningthe footinward.The Phenacodus
middlecuneiform
ismuch
like that inMenisco-
therium, but the proximaland
distal facets,though
similar, are alittle
more
flattened, notably that for the navicular.This
is true also for the Tetraclaenodon middle cuneiform,and
the dorsal surfaceis
more
nearly square.The
medial facet for thePhenacodus
internalcuneiform
is also relatively flatand
essentially straight, rather than arcuate. Itmay
be furthernoted that the ventral tubercle, evidently for the tibialis posterior,though
large inPhenacodus,
is relatively not sorugged
asinMeniscotherium.This

— The
externalcuneiform
issignificantlylarger thanthemiddlecuneiform
inMeniscotherium, withits surfacefor the third metatarsalmore
distal than the corresponding surfaceon
the middle cuneiforai.The
dorsal surfaceon some
specimens appears tobenearlytwiceaslong proximodistallyas that of themiddlecunei- form.The
proximal surface for the navicularis dorsoventrally elon- gateand
ventrally tapering.That on
the distal surface for the third metatarsal is also dorsoventrally elongate butsomewhat
projecting ventrally,and
distinctly concave. It is also transversely broad ante- riorlyand markedly
constricted aboutmidway. The
medial surfaceshows
anarrow, dorsoventrally elongate facet, adjacent to the proxi-mal
