of simple tapering rods not easily distinguishedfrom
setae.On
posterior segments there aretwo
or three notopodialand
usually one neuro- podial acicula,both
very slenderand
tapered.On
segmentsXIII
toXV,
inclusive, appears aseriesof fivetoseven stout,brown
spines ina verticalrow
at the cephalicmargin
of themuch
reduced palisade of setaeand which
are probably to be considered as modified acicula.The
dorsalmost (PI.XXI,
fig. 174) ismuch
larger than theothersand
projectsveryprominentlyand
obliquelyupward
acrosstheinterramal space.At
its base, asnoted above, is acirrusand
large pear-shaped gland. Like the largest of the others, only the tips ofwhich
are exposed, the dorsalmost spine ends in a thickened, spearlike, acute point.Among
the largespines aresome
smaller ones with attenuatetips.
Setae are all simple
and
of one type inboth
rami,though
differing considerably in proportionsand
structural details. Omitting the above-described spines,all aremore
orless acute,taperedand
flexible.Notopodial setae are generally longer
and more
slenderand
arranged in dense fan-shaped fascicleson
anterior somitesand
in delicate tufts of a few setaeon
posterior somites. Neuropodials of the anterior regionform
dense phalanges of four to six ranks inwhich
the setae increase in lengthand
changesomewhat
in structurefrom
before backward.On
theposterior regiontheyform
erect tufts ofvery few•etae similar in every respect to the notopodials.
On
the firstfew
parapodia notopodialand
neuropodial setae differ only in length.Both
arecolorlessand
slender.The
basal portionoftheexposed part contains a conspicuous spiral canal (PI.XXI,
fig. 175)wound round
a central fibrous axisand more
capaciouson
one sidethan on
the other, so that the axis issomewhat
eccentric. Farther out the canalbecomes
reducedand
then obsoleteon
the sideupon which
itwas
leastdeveloped,thusleaving
an
asymmetrical cameratedstructure, oftenaccompanied by
a veryminute
serrulationwhich
graduallydisappears,21
leaving nearly smooth, solid capillary tips.
On
the posterior region themore
slenderand
elongated setsehave
the structure of themore
delicate^artsoftheanteriorsetse,the basal regionwithits canalbeing absent
and
the shaft provided withminute
appressed teeth.No
bifurcate setae, such as are present inA. johnsoni, can.be detected in this species. In the
neuropodium
it is evident after afew
somites that theshortersetaeofthefirstrank
ortwo have become
dark-coloredand have
lostboth theexternal serrulationand
internal cavity.These
changesbecome emphasized
for several segments. Setae of the pos- teriorrows
are ofthesame
type as the notopodial setae, buthave
the basal canalizationand
camerationmore
evidentand
the slender solid tipslessprolonged.At
theventralend
ofthefascicle isasmall,somewhat
isolated tuft of shorter setae,some
ofwhich
are simple spines finelyserrulated alongonemargin and
a fewshort bluntspines with the ends enclosed in amucronate
hood. All ofthesedifferentia- tionsbecome more pronounced
to somiteXI,
afterwhich
the stout acicular spines appear in association with a conspicuous reduction in thenumber and
sizeoftheothersetae,particularlythoseoftheanterior rows. In this region the small ventral tuft iscomposed
entirely of a•fewsmall
hooded
spines(fig. 176),below which
is a secondtuft ofthe largest canaliculated setae remainingon
theneuropodium.
In the posterior region the neuropodial setaehave
exactly the structure of thenotopodial, but arefewer innumber.

on
somiteV
of allspecimens,risingfrom
the dorsal areaas apair of foliaceous, rather broadlylanceolate processes barely reaching to the notopodiaand
separatedby
a distance greater than theirlength. Proceeding caudad, theyregularly increaseinlengthand
size (PI.
XXI,
fig. 172) untilby
somiteXL
their length is about three-fifths thewidth
of the body, theirform
foliaceous lanceolateand
posture erect.On
the posterior piece theyhave become
fully one-and-one-half times thebody width and
taper to filamentoustips,being therefore
much
elongatedand
very conspicuous (PI.XXI,
fig.173).
They show no
special areas of strong ciliation, but are verji richly vascular, having a large axial vessel with a spacious bulbous expansion at the baseand
acomplex
bipinniform systemofvery nu-merous
lateral branches extendingtothemargins. Anteriorly thegills are quite freefrom
each otherand from
the notopodia, but as the parapodiaassume
the dorsal position theybecome
unitedby
atrans- versemembraneous
foldthat crosses thewhole width
ofthe dorsum.Proboscis very imperfectly
known,
only the ends of a few of the lacinated divisionsbeingexposedon any
