These hypodermal
pentactinic spiculesmay
occur singlyand
not in close groups oftwo
or more, as insome
othermembers
of this genus. Occasionally they occur fairly close to- gether. Diactinsdo
notseem
to associate with thehypodermal
paratangentials informing
the support to thedermal
layer.The
dermalia are mostly stauractins (fig. 16, c), but frequentlyrough
diactinsand
rarely pentactins, as well as stauractins.The common
stauractins appear abundantly in the entire stock.The
center of these is generally plain but occasionally
shows
a gentle swellingon
either the external or the internal sideor both.The
axial length of the spiculemay measure
260/^ to 320/aand
lOju, thick at the center.The
entire surface is slightly roughened, beingmore
pro-nounced
at the conically pointed ends.In
the diactins the sup- pressed rays are indicatedby
threeknobs
in a cruciatearrangement on
the center.The
rays arerough
all overand
taper slightlytoward
therounded
or obtusely conical end.They measure
320ju, to 480/x in total lengthand
12/x in thickness near the middle.In
the tauractins(fig. 16, h) the atrophied paratangential usually leaves a knoblike
relic, while the radial rays
may
ormay
not be similarly represented.The meshes
of the dermalia,which
arecomposed
of stauractins, diactins,and
pentactins, aremore
irregular in shape than those of the gastralia.The
gastralia arerough
oxyhexactins (fig. 16, a) of great axial length.The
length of the free proximal ray in themost prominent
part is 320/a; that of the distal ray, 160/x; that of the paratangentials,180/^; thickness of rays near the base, about 10/x,
on
the average.The
microtubercles
on
all rays are sparselyand
uniformly developed but aresomewhat
stronglypronounced on
all the ends.The
gastral lace-work shows
a regularquadrangular
shape,measuring
about 140/xby
190jU, in length of sides.
The
discoctasters (fig. 16, h) resemble in shapeand
size those of R. ungniculatus.They
arefound more
abundantly in the ectosome, as well as directlyunder
the dermalia, than in deeper parts. Their diameter is 150/a to 160/a.The
principals are entirelysmooth on
the surfaceand
16/^ long asmeasured from
the spicular center; inany
case they are
much
longer than in R. unguiculatus.The
terminalsnumber
6 to 8 to each principaland form
a rather broad, lilylike tuft,expanded
at the outer end.Each
terminal disk distinctlyshows

bering two, occasionally three or more,

the external side of the disk.Oxyhexasters represented
by
hemihexactinicand somewhat

hexactinic forms, are abundantly present in the choano-some
as well as in the gastral layer.Normally
developed oxyhex-asters (fig. 16, /)
may
frequently appear in the choanosome, measur- ing 130/A to 140/x in diameter.From
each exceedingly short prin- cipal there diverge two, occasionally three, slightly rough-surfacedand
nearly straight terminals. Hexactinicforms
(fig. 16, e) (axial length 120/x) are for themost
part appreciably smaller than the hemihexactinic. It seems to be the general rule that the oxy- hexastersshow
a tendency to take the hexactinic form.The
ter-minals ajopear to be moderately thin
and
are generally nearly straight.In
the hemihexactinicforms
(fig. 16, g) usually five, but sometimes one, of the six principals are uniterminal; the rest of the principals are biterminal, inwhich
case the entire ray is either straight or else is bent at the base.A
case of a. principal bearingmore
thantwo
terminals has not been observed.Microdiscohexasters of 30/x
and
40/i, in diameter are sparsely dis- tributed in thedermal membrane
as well as in the choanosome.They
are quite similar to those occurring in R. ung^iculatus, except inhaving
