Myockrous
dtl)Ovillosus^ describedby Jacoby from
"Mexico," is really a speciesofPachnepho7ms
that occurs abouttheMediterranean.There
aretwo
cotypes, oneintheBritishMuseum
(in theBaly
collec- tion, collectedby
Pilate)and
theotherintheMuseum
ofComparative Zoology
(in theBowditch
collectionfrom Jacoby
's collection). Icompared
a specimen ofPachnephorus
tessellatusDuftschmid
with the cotype in theMuseum
ofComparative
Zoologyand found them
indistinguishable.
The
short antennae w^ith the greatly thickened distaljoints, thethorax without toothing, theabdomen
withthe very longfirstsegment,theshallow emarginationat theapexofthemiddleand
hind tibiae,and
the broad, bifid scales all place this species inPachnephorus
ratherthaninMyochrous.The
detailed description of theMuseum
ofComparative
Zoology cotypeisas follows:
About
3.7mm.
in length, oblong oval, shining darkbrown
beneath with the dense, closely appressed, palebrown and
white scales, the scales short, broad, bifid.Antennae
barely reaching the base of the prothorax, the five distal jointsmuch
enlarged,and
aswide
as long.Prothoraxcylindrical, as longas broad, with a small apical
and
basal toothbutno
signs of lateral toothing, sides arcuate; diskwithout de- pressions except along the basal margin, smoothly coveredby
broad, palescales, thescalesinthe center alittledarker; punctation beneath apparently rather denseand
fine. Elytra broader than prothorax, taperingat apex, rather convex, withprominent
humeri,and
coveredby
broad scales thatform
a pattern, white along the baseand on
liumeri,and down
themiddleofeach elytrontwo
ormore
white spots,and
another along the side;rows
of striate punctures not contingent l)utwell-spaced,and
thepunctures round.Body
beneathmore
densely clad withnarrower and
longer scales, particularly along the sides of theabdomen, down
themiddle
of theabdomen and on
theupper
under-body
less scaly; firstabdominal segment
nearly half the length ofabdomen
; legsless densely scaly, not toothed; middleand
hindtibiae withan
emarginationatapex; anteriortibiaewithouttoothing.It seems likely that
some
mistake in locality labelsmay have
beenmade,
