wear a suit without looking like a stiff. What can I do?

Vicky Arora, Mumbai

‹ Firstly, don’t act like a stiff if you don’t want to look like one. Secondly, pick a well-structured suit that has a contemporary yet classic appeal.

Choose a suit that is light: not heavily structured yet crisp and well-tailored, made from very good fabric. Also make sure that it complements your personality.

What’s the best exercise for building defi nition on the outer edge of the pectorals?

—Kishore Shrestha, Mumbai If you have defi nition around the edges, it’s because you have little fat there. And if you don’t like your outer- chest development, you likely have little bulk in your pectorals overall. I suggest heavy chest presses to build mass.

2

I can curl a weight 10 times with my right arm but only seven times with my left. Should I do maximum reps with each arm, or the same number?

—Rohan Naik, Mumbai Here’s a strategy I stole from the strength coach Craig Ballantyne, CSCS: start your set with your stronger arm. Then match reps with your weaker arm, even if you have to stop and rest between reps. But your arms grow only when you’ve developed enough size and strength in your back and shoulder muscles to give them a reason to grow. Incite them with the muscle snatch: grab a barbell with a snatch grip (double shoulder-width)(A). Hold it above your knees (B). Now, as fast as you can, drag it up along your body, as if you were doing an upright row (C&D), then snap it overhead (E). After a couple of months of snatches, bench presses, and

pullups, try curls again.

3

Is it possible to tone and build abs at the same time? I’m doing leg raises and crunches to tone my abs but would like to add more muscle as well.

—Tenzing Wangpo, Kolkata Toning your muscles just means that your muscles are in a state of slight contraction. So if you want muscle tone, just tighten your muscles, that’s all.

Actively building muscles on the other hand involves overload, where you make the muscles do something extra, something it hasn’t done before, so that it reacts by getting bigger and stronger. There is no such thing as toning exercise. There are only muscle- building exercises. Do them in a way that challenges your muscles, or you won’t see real results.
