floors.As
thischangeinregimen
isgeneral,general causesmust
be sought.A number
of writers5 attribute the present epicycle of erosion to in- troduction of livestock.Formation
of trailsand
destruction of vege- tationby
overgrazing are supposed to have concentrated floodwatersand
to have allowed these floods to erode the present channels.The argument
of these writers is best expressedby Duce
(1918, p. 452) :"We may,
therefore,summarize
theeffectofcattleby
saying thatthey increase the rapidity of the run-offand
therate of erosionby destroy- ing vegetation,by
compacting the soil,and
byforming
channels for the passage of water."The
apparent coincidence in time of the initiation of overgrazingand
the beginning of dissection is significantand more
data on this phase of theproblem
are needed. Coincidence of settlementand
the deepeningofthechannelofRio Puerco seems
well established (Bryan, 1928a).The
theory that erosion is causedby
a slight upliftand
in- crease in the gradient of streams has been generally rejected because erosion of aboutequalmagnitude
affects streams of differentdrainage systems that flow in all possible directions. Uplift so nicely adjusted to the drainage pattern is inconceivable.Huntington
(1914, pp. 33-34)was
doubtless the firstto advocatea climatic changeas thecauseof erosion,and Bryan
(1923a, pp. 77-80) has brought together available evidence thata slightly wetter climatewas
characteristic of southernArizona
atthetime of thefirst Spanish explorations.Gregory
(1917, pp. 131-132) advocates climatic changeand
rejects theargument
for overgrazingin the followingwords
:
Itisimportanttonotein thisconnection thatthe balance betweenaggradation [alluviation] and degradation [erosion] is nicely adjusted in an arid region where the stream gradients are steep, andthat accordingly small changes in the amount of rain, its distribution, or the character of storms and changes in the amount andnatureofthe flora resultininsignificantmodificationofstreamhabit.
Even the effect of sheep grazing is recorded in the run-off, and this influence combinedwithdeforestationhas been consideredbymanyinvestigators as the sole causeof recentterracingin the Plateauprovince. For theNavajo Country these
human factors exert a strong influence but are not entirely responsible for the disastrous erosion of recent years. The region has not been deforested; the present cover of vegetation affects the run-off but slightly, and parts of the region not utilized for grazing presentthe samedetailedtopographic featuresas theareas annually overrunby Indianherds.

(1922, 1924a, 1924b) presents the interesting hypothesis that prehistoric peoples,bymeans
of smallreservoirs,check dams,and embankments
designed to spread floods, used or distributedmost
of thewater so that floods of themain
arroyoswere
decreasedinvolume and
violence. Hence, sedimentwas
depositedand
thearroyosfilledup.When
these ancients disappearedand
their structures fell into decay, erosionwas
resumed.Reagan
also supposes that the prehistoric peo- ples killed off thegame,and
thereafter the vegetative cover increased until it gave amaximum
of protection to the soil. This coverwas
destroyed with introduction of domestic animals after the Spanish conquest.Thus Reagan assumes
that the structures built by prehis- toricmen were
sufficient toreduce floods without complete considera- tion of the difficulties involved.He
ignores the fact that alternation betweenerosionand
alluviationbegan beforeentrance of thePuebloan peoples into the area.The
earlier epicycles could not have been influenced by such causes asReagan
advances.Olmsted
(1919, p. 88) estimated the cost of checkdams and bank
structures for control of Gila River above theSan
Carlosdam
siteat atotal of $6,401,029. Elaborate as these plans seem, engineersby no means
agree that they are adequate to control floods on Gila River,much
lesstorestorechannelconditionstothoseobtainingbefore 1880.In recentyears the Soil Conservation Service has built structures for control of erosion
which
exceedinmagnitude
anythingpossibleto the ancients. Success has been rareand
modest.That
primitiveman
could erect barriers sufficient innumber and
size to accomplish this result seems improbable. If such attemptshad
beenmade,
remnants should remain tobeeasily identified.All the investigators mentioned above considered that they
were
dealing with only one period of sedimentationand
one period of ero- sion, althoughHuntington
thought theseminor
changes of the geo- logical Recentwere
thelatterpartof aseriesofsuch changesrunning back into Pleistocene time. If the post-Bonito channel represents a valid cycle of erosionand
sedimentation thenthreecomplete local cy- cles of erosionand
sedimentationand
part of a fourthmust
be explained.These
