My ambition in this paper has been not only to tell the (brief) history of museol- ogy and the development of museological education and research in the Nordic countries, but also to emphasise that museology, today, should be conceived of and defined in a much broader sense than before. I would conclude – and this is my personal conclusion based on exploring a variety of museums, museological and heritage study centres – that museology, heritology, museum studies and critical heritage studies all have a joint scope of research which encompasses museums, the concept of museality, material studies, cultural heritage, heritage total and preservation strategies.

Heritage institutions will, I think, be more and more at the core of the action, trying to change things and make an impact in society when needed. Museums, as the preservation strategies and institutions of society, can no longer go on just collecting the leftovers of our destructive society, without participating in the reasons for this destruction. museology should be a key element in a new model of sustainable development that sees heritage, within or outside museums, as important in the fight against poverty, in the protection of the environment and a source of capital for local populations, as well as a source of pride, social cohesion and collective identity.
