Indiana, and we can boast of having interstate recognition due to thefact
that four students hail from the State of Ohio. Our Indiana girls represent the followingareas:
Indianapolis, Frances-ville,
Gaston,Urbana,
Bluffton,Angola,
Decatur,Auburn,
and fivewho are resi-
dents of metropolitan Fort Wayne area.We are gratified with the progress that has been made by our students during the first semester, and as we
enter
into the secondsemester,
we are looking for- ward toa
busy schedule that includes additional laboratory projectsand more
clinicalapplication
time,which is
spent in the officesof practicing
dentistsin this
area.Our
program has
beengranted pre-
liminary provisional approval for
ac- creditationby the
American Dental sso- ciation,Council on Dental Education.
We will have
a site visitationon
April 19for the purpos of accreditation by the
membersof the Council
onDental Edu-
cation,who are yet to
benamed.
Many

It occurred to me that
you might ap- preciate havino- information regarding ad- mission to d ntal school placed in this
columnso that you might file it for ready reference.
It isa fine compliment to a dentist to have a patient or friend decide upon dentistry as his life's service, and
certainly a credit to the dentist if he can elicit a knowledo-e of the steps to be taken to gain admission to the s hool.
The Freshman Class is enrolled at Indiana niversity School of Dentistry
eachSeptember. The
candidatesshould make a formal application at least a year before they wish to be admitted.
Itis often beneficial for the candidate to have his prerequisite course of study reviewed by the Recorder of the Dental
chool early in hi preparatorystudy. Application blanks are obtainable from the Dental School and must be accompanied by an official transcript from
each collegeat- tended, along with a $10.00 processino- fee.
All applicants for the Indiana Univer- sity School of Dentistry are required to take the American Dental Association Aptitude Test.

ever,students are strong- ly advised to take this test no later than January of the year they wish to
enterdental school. There is a $15.00 fee for the battery of t sts given and for this the results will be sent to fiv
edifferent dental schools, as long as the request for sending them is received prior to the examination.
There
is an additional fee of $1 .00 for
eachschool over the minimum five and also a $1.00 fee for those sent after th test has been o·iven. The testing program r quires one full day at the testing
centerand most dental schools are designat d as testing centers and, if so,
o-ivethe test at
each desio·nated and requiredtime of the year, as
earlier indicated.If

entalSchool some time prior to around 1950, you probably have little knowledge of what the Aptitude Testing Program is all about.
Even if
yo~1w re require d to take the test for admission, perhaps you will find the following information regarding the program interestino- and informative.
The use
of aptitude tests stems from the desire to do several thinas. Some of these objectives are:

entalAptitude Testing Proaram
is
conducted by theCouncil on D
entalEducation in cooperation with the Ameri- can Association of Dental Schools. It has been in operation since 1950. Over 80,000 applicants have taken the test since that time. The main objective of using the test is, of course, to reduce the number or students who are unable to complete the course as a result of scholastic defi- ciency.
In
1960 there were less than 5 per cent of those enrolled in dental schools that failed to complete the training as compared to 15 per cent prior to the administration of the test. Of course, this improvement cannot be entirely credited to the use of the test, but most certainly the test has had a significant impact.The present battery of tests includes (1) Carving Dexterity Test, (2) Space Relations Test, ( 3) Survey of the Natural Sciences Examination, ( 4) Reading Com- prehension m Natural Sciences, ( 5) School and College Ability Test and (6) an experimental test, the Opinion, At- titude, and Interest Survey. In general, the five predictive tests are designed to measure ( 1) mental level, ( 2) reading comprehension, ( 3) science comprehen- sion, ( 4) visualization of space conception, and ( 5) carving dexterity.

The carving dexterity test is also a very fascinating and
challenging portion of theDental Aptitude Test. The students are assigned a
laboratoryspace which has available all
ofthe necessary armamen- tarium for taking this portion of the test.

description givento the participants for executing a carving follows:
By using only a knife, a ruler, and a pencil, carve a piece of chalk which meas- ures approximately 314" in length and

Results of the tests are provided the dental
schoolswithin the five-week period after each examination. In order to mini- mize the difficulties of admissions com- mittees in reviewing credentials of pro- spective applicants, the Council on Dental Education authorized the Division of Educational Measurements to reproduce for
eachdental school, a list of names and addresses,
andtest scores of all applicants participating in the program during each testing period.
On occasion,a student may apply to a
dentalschool but fail to request that the results of
hisaptitude test be sent to the particular school. By having the results of all those who took the tests available, it is possible for the admissions
committeeto proceed with
theevaluation of the candidate. The admis- sions ommittee usually meets shortly after the results of each testing is ob-
tained.In a paper published
inthe
June1966 issue of the Journal of Dental Education, Thomas J. Ginley, M.A., Assistant Secre- tary, Council on Dental Education, and Director, Division of Education Measure- ments, ADA
,presented some interesting statistics. On the basis o( prior distribu- tions of test scores on the School and College Ability Test,
itappeared that this
examination's difficulty levelwas
be-low that of the
currentcandidates. The normaltive data available indicated that this test has an upper range of second year
collegeand since approximately 70 percent of the applicants participating
inthe Aptitude Testing Program
havethree or more years of pre-dental educa- tion, it appeared that the
levelof the
examinationwas not currently appro- priate. It
shouldbe noted that the con- tinued
evaluation of the program coupled withresearch is an important aspect of
