2. Description of Data a. First Conditions
The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) , because classroom action research could improve the students’
simple past tense mastery. Then, The rsearcher also used contextual teaching and learning approach because from the result of pre survay the researcher had information that the students’ at the eighth graders of MTs N 1 East Lampung had low in simple past tense. Based on the result of pre survey from 38 students, only 12 students who was complete and 26 students who was incomplete with the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) for English lesson is 70.
In addition, the researcher used contextual teaching and learning approach to improve students’ simple past tense. The study result was gotten through test that was administered to the students in the beginning research and in the end of every cycle, while the activity data was gotten from the observation when the learning activity was done. There are two cycles, each cycle consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting.
b. Cycle 1 1) Planning
In this research, the researcher and Mrs. Novi Diana Mandawasa, S.Ag as collaborator. The researcher and the
collaborator would like to discuss before the teaching learning process would be began, as follow:
(1) Preparing the lesson plan.
(2) Preparing the material about simple past tense.
(3) To make the items that will be examined as the pre test and the post-test I in the cycle 1.
(4) Preparing contextual teaching and learning approach that used in the action learning.
(5) To make the observation sheet of the students activity 1.
At MTs N 1 East Lampung, The minimum mastery criteria (MMC) for English was 70. The lesson is simple past tense. In this meeting, the students were expected by the teacher got specific information of the simple past tense. In the first and second meeting, the teacher would explain about simple past tense by using contextual teaching and learning approach.
Then, in the last meeting, the teacher would evaluate multiple choice for the 38 students of VIIID class. The evaluation was about multiple choice, it consisted of ten questions based on the simple past tense.
