The
two-personofficerteamsworked
fastand "gooey"
tomake
20banana
splitsinless thanthree minutes.The
GarrardCounty Chap-ter inLancaster,Kentucky,had a unique meeting to promote joining the
FFA.
In Septem-ber, they held a banana split contest.
The
chapter suppliedtheicecream,
whipped
cream and bowls andallmembers
brought their favorite topping.The
chapterofficershadtoseewho
could
make
the most bananasplitsthequickest.
The
officer teamwas
di- videdintofour2-personteams.Each
was
given20 bowlsandall the fixin's to
make
theirbanana splits.
The
winning team completedtheir20splitsm
!1 minutes.It wasafun event and the
bananasplits wererefreshing since it was hot!

event also helped get 100 percentmembership

Eat. Sleep. Prepare to be a national officer. "I put every spare
moment
into preparingforthoseinterviewsinNovem-
ber,"hesays.
The
cycle continued untilNovember
16, 1990. Six other
names
were called.Shane's
was
not. At thatmoment,
says Shane. "I felt like Iwas
in avacuum. Ithought,wheredoIgo from here?Itwas
a
moment
ofdespair."It
was
also a time of disbelief. "It wasn't until thosenew
national officers left the stage that I realized they weren't calling any more names," he says.And
evenonthe
way
home,hestillfeltlikethere musthave beensome
kind ofmistake.Shattered Dreams
Afterall,
why
wouldn'the get anof- fice?"Allmy
lifeI'dheardifyoujustgive110percent to yourgoals,you will suc- ceed.That'swhatIlivedby.Like gospel,"

my
expectationsandplans for the futureinvolved runningforandbecoming
anationalofficer. Itsoundslikean obses- sion.
And
that's because it was."As
a result, he says, "All ofmy
eggs were inone basket.
When
that basket fell,my
eggs shattered. I didn't
know
where to turn."This year though,sinceShanesetother goalsthatweren'ttied tobeinga national officer,he
knew
hisworld wouldn'tendifhedidn't receiveanoffice. "The trick."
he says, "is
knowing
that ifyou do not reacha goal,youhaven'tfailed.You
just change yourcoursetoanalternate route, and keepmoving

Whether
he hadreceived anofficeor not, Shane says the experiencewas
in- valuable. "There's somuch
preparation and discipline required fin running] youleamtobeorganizedandtohandlestress thatyounormally don'thaveineveryday
life.Ithink theKansasCity interviewsare awonderful
way
oftestingspeakingskills,your agricultural
knowledge
and self awareness."He
adds."Lastyear,running foranational officetaughtme
aboutlife.You
don'talwayssucceed.And
you havetodealwiththat in aconstructiveway.In
my
book, a winner issomeone who
struggles for something...and sacrifices.
