Add weight to your pullups for better results

chances are painkillers will help him out. You are not

his trainer. It’s not your business.

I want to get to 10 pullups, but no matter how much and how hard I try, I can’t go beyond eight. Help!

—Neelabh Varma, Bangalore Let’s face it: pullups are tough. But the solution to this problem is easier than you think. It comes down to this: if you want to be better at pulling, you have to pull more than your own weight. You do that with weighted pullups.

Here’s how: after a warmup (a couple of sets of lat pulldowns with about 40 to 60 per cent of your body weight), do 4 or 5 pullups with your body weight. Rest 2 minutes, then strap on something heavy—a belt with a few heavy locks

hanging from it, a backpack with some books in it—and do 4 or 5 pullups. Rest 2 minutes, then fi nish with as many pullups without weight as you can do. Do this workout once a week for 3 weeks in addition to your normal workout. Then, in the fourth week, grab the bar and see how many you can knock out.

I can’t afford expensive protein supplements. Do the cheap ones work just as well for muscle building?

—Karan, via e-mail All whey protein supplements

should work the same. But in my experience, the pricier powders taste better. And the better it tastes, the more likely you are to keep using it.

However, the bigger question: do you need protein and meal replacement powders at all? No one has done a study comparing protein-supplemented lifters with those getting the same amount of protein and the same times from food instead of powders, says nutritionist Thomas Incledon, MD.

But I use protein supplements religiously, and so do most serious, long-time lifters I know. The main reason:

convenience and speed. “Your muscles are begging for amino acids (the building blocks of protein) right after a workout,” says Jose Antonio, PhD, co- author of Supplements for Strength- Power Athletes. Some research shows that taking protein just after a workout is better than taking it afterwards.

Me, I am satisfi ed with the post- workout shake, which I mix at my desk. It hits the spot and confuses my co- workers, who wonder why my desk is dusted with white powder in the afternoon.

I had knee surgery a couple of years ago, and I can’t do most of the leg exercises that you recommend. My thighs are shrinking! What can I do?

—Hiren Khera, Mumbai I feel your pain. I haven’t had a knee surgery, but after a game of basketball, I feel like a practice dummy for mafi a goons. My fi rst bit of advice is to check with your doctor (or physiotherapist).

Next, strengthen your quadriceps—the teardrop-shaped front-thigh muscles—

any way you can without pain, since they help protect what’s left of your knee ligaments. Try any or all of the following exercises.

Adeadlift works the quadriceps without putting a lot of pressure on the knees.

And try a high-foot position leg press, in which your heels are at the top of the platform and your toes hang off. This position forces your hamstrings to work harder, and the shortened range of motion takes the pressure off your knees.

ASumo deadlift means your feet are set wide apart—like a Sumo wrestler’s challenging pose—toes pointed out 45 degrees, hands 15cm to 30cm apart and your back straight while you lift. You’ll work your inner-thigh muscles, which can get weak from underuse when you exercise around a bad knee.

Finally, perform squats keeping your knees pointed straight ahead, without letting them buckle either inwards or outwards at any point of the move. Rest your knees a day or two before and after this, and use less weight until you can do the exercise with perfect form.

What is sour cream?

Sour cream is really only mildly sour, the taste being a re

sult of

the lactic acid crea

ted by fermentation.

Available in shops th

at stock imported food items, sour cream comes in full-fat, light and

non-fat varieties and

is mainly used as a condiment—toppin

g for baked potatoes—or dressing. It is not advisable to store sour

cream for more than a month after the manufacturing date. Throw it out if

the smell changes.
