The National Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event is a competitive activity that allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. Activities included in the event are a written exam, a team activity, demonstration of problem-solving skills, and hands-on performance activities. Areas of emphasis include energy systems, environmental/natural resource systems, machinery & equipment systems, structural systems and industry & marketing systems. Each team in the event has competed with other chapters in their state for the privilege of participating in the national event.
The event is one of many educational activities at the National FFA Convention in which FFA members practice the lessons taught in agricultural education classes. The event was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Agricultural Mechanics event is sponsored by the Firestone Agricultural Tire Division/Bridgestone Firestone Trust Fund of Des Moines, Iowa as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members - all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture - as part of 7,439 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
