coal-burning range in the kitchen is the only kitchen appliance. Itis lighted at least twice aday

either aneighbor or a stranger passing along it.John Runner works
about 6months
out of the year for thePark Department

Liza supplements the familyincome by making
oak-split baskets.Some
welfare assistance isprovided during the winter
when John
is idle.The Runners
are in their late 30's,but
theyhave
a large family, as theywere
married before they were 20.There
are three older boys; one is in the ninth gradeand two have dropped
out of school.John
is the "breaddaddy" but
not the "realdaddy"
of the oldest boy.Three

attended boarding school through the fourth grade, but he did not like it. Despite the fact that hewas made

takesthem down
to the hospitalfor shots.She
hasgreat faith in thepower
of injections.But,shesays,

doctor.
The
Indian doctor asksyou
questions too,and
givesyou
herb tea— and with him you
getit all—
not pushed down
into apill."
When
the children get too obstreperous, Lizawarns them
that a booger will get them, or,what
is probably worse, a"unega"
(White person) will get them.On
rare occasionssome
of the bigger onesmay
get switched.The
three older boys often spend nightsaway from home.
NeitherJohn
nor Lizaknow where
they are, and, unless the absence is protracted, don'tworry
about it. Children are in- variably sent to ask for favors or toborrow
something for their parents. Liza's sister often acts in thesame
capacity for her. Liza participates in the gossip of the areaand
passesit on,John and
Lizaarenotpoliticallyactive,but they go toQuallaClub
meetings.John wants
to see a fullblood council.He
feels pretty certain thatsome men who might
run for chief or councU arefor theWhite
Indians."The White
Indianshave aU
themoney and
they'd like to get the land allotted."John
doesn'thave much money;
his carwas
repossessed afewmonths
ago becausehewas
fivepayments
in arrears.He
plans to get another as soon ashe

Although
they are poor, a place is set at the table for everyone.Liza never formally extends an invitation;that everyone will eat is a matteroffact. In the

Runners were
unrushed, conversations were inter- spersed with periods of comfortable silence.They do

theydo
notexpectittobe much
differentfrom
