Earthquakes
Earthquakes occur in places where earth movements takes place. An earthquake is a sudden movement or the tremor of the earth. Earthquakes can be destructive. Cities and millions of lives can be destroyed city, huge sums of money are needed, not to mention the time taken to rebuild the city.
Earthquakes are caused by powerful forces at work inside the earth. These forces cause underground pressure and movement. Movement and pressure becomes too great, the rock will snap, creating a fault. At the same time, the stored-up tension and energy are released. An Earthquake therefore occurs. A severe earthquake is estimated to be as powerful as one hundred atomic bombs, shooting out energy in waves, most of whish is driven underground, thus lessening the effect.
Fires sparked off by an earthquake can be great danger to the cities.
Waves running along the surface of the ground not only destroy buildings, but can also damage water pipes and start fires simultaneously. Firemen will be helpless against the fire if there is no water. For this reason, many cities ”prone” to earthquakes store water in special places so that there will be water even if underground water pipes are broken.
